Best Water Parks in Orlando at a Glance

If you only have time for one Orlando water park, the best choice depends on your family. 🏆 Holiday Blueprint Pick

Best Overall: Universal Volcano Bay
For families who want a water park that feels more like a full theme park experience, Volcano Bay gets our vote. The combination of major thrill slides, excellent family attractions, immersive tropical theming and the Krakatau volcano makes it particularly impressive.

Universal Volcano Bay

Universal Volcano Bay water park in Orlando Florida

Universal Volcano Bay is much more than somewhere to cool off for a few hours. Built around the enormous Krakatau volcano, the park combines big thrill rides, family attractions, wave pools and relaxing areas with some of the most impressive theming of any water park in Orlando.

For UK families already planning to visit Universal Orlando Resort, Volcano Bay is particularly easy to include as part of a multi-park holiday.

Best Rides & Attractions at Volcano Bay

Krakatau Aqua Coaster is one of the park’s headline attractions, combining a water coaster with twists, turns and uphill sections through the volcano.

For serious thrill seekers, Ko’okiri Body Plunge provides a very different experience, while Honu ika Moana offers large raft rides that families can enjoy together.

If you want something more relaxing, Kopiko Wai Winding River provides the traditional lazy-river experience, while TeAwa The Fearless River turns things up considerably with a fast-moving current.

Who Is Volcano Bay Best For?

Best for: families with older children and teenagers, thrill seekers and anyone already spending several days at Universal Orlando.

There is plenty for younger children too, but Volcano Bay really stands out when your family wants proper thrill rides alongside the pools and relaxing areas.

Holiday Blueprint Verdict

⭐ Our rating: 9.5/10

If we could choose only one Orlando water park, Volcano Bay would be our first choice. It offers the strongest combination of theming, thrill rides and family attractions and feels worthy of a full day rather than simply being a break from the main theme parks.

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon

Disney's Typhoon Lagoon water park in Orlando Florida

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon offers a very different experience from Volcano Bay. Rather than focusing primarily on huge thrill slides, it combines Disney-style tropical theming with a mixture of family attractions, relaxing areas and one seriously impressive wave pool.

It’s particularly easy to consider if you’re already spending several days at Walt Disney World and want a change of pace between the main theme parks.

Best Rides & Attractions at Typhoon Lagoon

Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool is the centrepiece of the park and produces enormous waves that make it far more exciting than a typical hotel or water-park wave pool.

Crush ’n’ Gusher is one of the best attractions for older children and teenagers, combining water-coaster elements with fast drops and turns.

Families can also tackle raft and tube slides, while Castaway Creek offers a much more relaxing lazy-river journey around the park.

Younger visitors have dedicated areas where they can enjoy smaller slides and water-play attractions away from the biggest thrills.

Who Is Typhoon Lagoon Best For?

Best for: Disney families, mixed-age groups and anyone who wants a water park with a good balance between excitement and relaxation.

Teenagers still have enough to keep them entertained, but families who want the largest concentration of high-thrill water rides may prefer Volcano Bay or Aquatica.

Holiday Blueprint Verdict

⭐ Our rating: 9/10

Typhoon Lagoon is an excellent addition to a Walt Disney World holiday. The tropical setting, enormous wave pool and mixture of attractions make it particularly good for families who want a fun but slightly more relaxed day between major theme park visits.

Compare Aquatica & SeaWorld Ticket Options

Planning to visit Aquatica? Compare SeaWorld Orlando multi-park ticket options to see whether combining Aquatica with SeaWorld and other parks could offer better value for your holiday.

Aquatica Orlando

Aquatica Orlando water park for families in Florida

Aquatica Orlando is SeaWorld Orlando’s water park and one of the strongest choices for families who want lots of slides without sacrificing attractions for younger children.

It doesn’t have the same immersive theme-park feel as Volcano Bay, but the sheer variety of water attractions makes it particularly good for families with children of different ages.

Best Rides & Attractions at Aquatica

Thrill seekers have plenty to choose from, including Ihu’s Breakaway Falls, where riders face a near-vertical drop after the floor disappears beneath them.

Ray Rush is a great family option, combining raft sections, twists and a giant sphere before finishing with a splash.

For something competitive, Riptide Race lets riders race side-by-side through twisting slides, while the park also has wave pools and more relaxing areas when you need a break from the bigger attractions.

Younger children are particularly well catered for, with dedicated splash and play areas designed for smaller guests.

Who Is Aquatica Best For?

Best for: families with children of different ages, slide lovers and anyone combining their water-park day with a wider SeaWorld Orlando holiday.

Aquatica is particularly strong if you have one child chasing the biggest slides while another prefers splash areas and gentler attractions.

Holiday Blueprint Verdict

⭐ Our rating: 9/10

Aquatica might not have Volcano Bay’s spectacular theming, but it makes up for it with an excellent variety of attractions. For families wanting lots of water slides and plenty for younger children, it can actually be the best choice of the three.

Which Orlando Water Park Is Best for Teenagers?

For families travelling with teenagers, we’d put Universal Volcano Bay and Aquatica Orlando at the top of the list.

Volcano Bay gets our overall vote for teenagers. Ko’okiri Body Plunge is a 125-foot free-fall body slide, while TeAwa The Fearless River provides a fast-moving alternative to a traditional lazy river. Krakatau Aqua Coaster also gives families something they can enjoy together. Universal currently lists a 48-inch minimum height for Ko’okiri and 42 inches for Krakatau and TeAwa.

Aquatica is extremely close behind and could actually be the better choice if your teenagers mainly care about doing as many slides as possible. Ihu’s Breakaway Falls, Riptide Race, Ray Rush and several other major attractions give thrill seekers plenty to work through.

Typhoon Lagoon still has plenty of fun for older children — particularly its huge Surf Pool and Crush ‘n’ Gusher — but we’d choose Volcano Bay or Aquatica for a family specifically prioritising water-park thrills.

🏆 Holiday Blueprint Pick for Teenagers

Universal Volcano Bay

Choose Volcano Bay for the strongest overall experience, or Aquatica if your teenager’s priority is simply slides, slides and more slides.

Which Orlando Water Park Is Best for Younger Children?

For families travelling with younger children, Aquatica Orlando gets our vote overall. It has an excellent range of dedicated children’s areas alongside attractions the whole family can enjoy together.

Walkabout Waters is a huge interactive water-play area with slides, splash pools and water features, while Turi’s Kid Cove has tipping buckets, spraying jets and a kid-sized wave slide. Both currently have no minimum height requirement, although normal supervision rules apply.

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon is another excellent choice for little ones. Ketchakiddee Creek is specifically designed for children 48 inches (122cm) or shorter, with shallow pools, mini waterslides, fountains, a small beach and water-play features.

Volcano Bay shouldn’t be ruled out either. Tot Tiki Reef has no minimum height, while Runamukka Reef is designed for children under 54 inches. This means younger children still have plenty to do even if older family members are tackling the major slides.

🏆 Holiday Blueprint Pick for Younger Children

Aquatica Orlando

We’d choose Aquatica for the strongest overall mixture of dedicated children’s play areas, family attractions and things for older siblings, making it particularly useful when you’re travelling with children of different ages.

Which Orlando Water Park Is Best Value?

The best-value Orlando water park can depend less on the individual admission price and more on which multi-park tickets your family is already buying.

For many UK families, Volcano Bay can offer excellent value when it’s included as part of a Universal multi-park ticket. Universal’s current UK All Parks ticket includes Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe and Volcano Bay for 14 consecutive days. There is also a cheaper three-park option that excludes Volcano Bay, so it’s worth comparing the price difference when booking.

Disney can work similarly. UK & Ireland Disney Magic Tickets include access to Disney’s water parks, alongside the four main Walt Disney World theme parks. Which Disney water park is available can depend on seasonal operation, so check whether Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach will be operating during your dates.

Aquatica can be extremely good value if you’re also planning SeaWorld and Busch Gardens. Current UK ticket options include packages combining all three parks, including a 14-day unlimited-access option.

This is why we wouldn’t choose a water park based purely on the advertised one-day ticket price. Work out which parks your family already intends to visit and compare the total ticket package.

🏆 Holiday Blueprint Value Tip

Check your existing tickets before buying anything extra.

You may discover that water-park admission is already included — or that upgrading your multi-park ticket costs considerably less than buying a separate water-park ticket later.

Planning your park tickets? Read our Orlando Theme Park Tickets for UK Travellers guide before booking.

Do You Need a Full Day at an Orlando Water Park?

For most families, yes — we’d plan a full day.

Orlando’s major water parks have enough slides, pools, rivers and children’s areas to fill several hours, and trying to squeeze one into the end of a theme park day can leave you feeling rushed.

Volcano Bay is particularly easy to treat as a full-day park. Universal currently operates it with substantial daytime opening hours, although these vary by date and season.

Aquatica also has enough slides, pools, rivers and children’s attractions to comfortably occupy a full day, especially if your family wants to repeat favourite rides or spend some time relaxing.

Typhoon Lagoon can work either way. We’d happily spend a full day there, but it can also make a good slower day between Disney theme parks, particularly if your family mainly wants the Surf Pool, lazy river and a handful of slides. Disney itself sells dedicated one-day water-park admission, so it certainly isn’t designed as just a quick add-on.

Holiday Blueprint Tip

On a 14-night Orlando holiday, we’d deliberately schedule at least one water-park day as a break between intensive theme park days.

You still get plenty of excitement, but the pace can feel considerably more relaxed than spending another 10–12 hours walking around a major theme park.

Planning two weeks in Florida? See how we’d fit water parks and rest days into our 14 Day Orlando Itinerary for UK Families.

What Should You Take to an Orlando Water Park?

ou don’t need to take a huge bag to an Orlando water park, but packing a few essentials can make the day considerably easier — especially in the Florida heat.

We’d take:

  • Swimwear that’s comfortable and secure enough for water slides
  • High-SPF, water-resistant sunscreen and remember to reapply it
  • Water shoes or flip-flops — paths can become extremely hot in the Florida sun
  • Towels if you want to avoid renting them
  • A change of clothes for the journey back to your hotel
  • Refillable water bottles
  • A waterproof phone pouch if you want your phone with you around the park
  • A plastic/wet bag for damp swimwear at the end of the day
  • Sunglasses and a hat for time out of the water

Water shoes are particularly useful, although individual attractions can have their own footwear restrictions. Aquatica, for example, currently allows water shoes, sandals and water socks on most attractions but prohibits them on several specific slides.

You also don’t necessarily need to pack your own towel. Volcano Bay and Aquatica offer towel rentals, while Disney has towel facilities at Typhoon Lagoon; Disney Resort hotel guests can currently collect complimentary towels there.

Should You Rent a Locker?

We would.

A locker means you aren’t worrying about phones, wallets, car keys and dry clothes while everyone is in the water. All-day lockers are available at Aquatica, and Disney also provides keyless lockers at its water parks for a daily charge.

Keep what you carry around the park to a minimum and leave anything you don’t need securely stored.

Holiday Blueprint Tip

Don’t underestimate the Florida sun just because you’re in the water.

Build sunscreen reapplication and regular water breaks into the day, particularly with children.

Orlando Water Park Tickets for UK Visitors

UK visitors are in a particularly good position when it comes to Orlando water-park tickets because water-park admission is often bundled into the multi-day tickets we’re likely to buy anyway.

Before purchasing a separate water-park ticket, check exactly what your existing theme-park ticket includes

Universal Volcano Bay Tickets

If you’re buying Universal tickets from the UK, pay close attention to the difference between the ticket packages.

Universal’s All Parks Ticket currently provides 14 consecutive days of park-to-park access to Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe and Volcano Bay.

The cheaper Three Park Adventure Ticket does not include Volcano Bay, so families wanting a Volcano Bay day should compare the cost of upgrading before buying a separate ticket.

Disney Water Park Tickets

Disney’s UK & Ireland 7-Day and 14-Day Magic Tickets include water-park access alongside the four main Walt Disney World theme parks.

One important difference is that Disney specifies admission to Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon, whichever is open. Water parks can be affected by seasonal operation, refurbishment, capacity and weather closures, so check the operating calendar for your holiday dates.

Aquatica Tickets

Aquatica becomes particularly interesting if SeaWorld and Busch Gardens are also on your itinerary.

Current UK ticket options include a three-park package providing 14 consecutive days of unlimited admission to SeaWorld, Aquatica and Busch Gardens, with unlimited parking also included.

Want a full breakdown? Read our Orlando Theme Park Tickets for UK Travellers guide before buying your park tickets.

How Many Water Park Days Do You Need in Orlando?

For most families visiting Orlando for two weeks, we’d recommend planning one or two dedicated water-park days rather than trying to visit every water park.

Orlando holidays can be surprisingly tiring. Several consecutive days at Disney, Universal and SeaWorld can mean early starts, late finishes and a huge amount of walking, so a water-park day can provide a welcome change of pace.

If you’re staying for 14 days, one water park is probably enough if theme parks are your main priority. Families who particularly enjoy water parks could comfortably include two — especially if they’re already included within your Universal or SeaWorld ticket package.

Should You Have a Rest Day After a Water Park?

Don’t necessarily treat a water-park day as a complete rest day. You can still spend hours swimming, climbing stairs and walking around the park.

Instead, we’d avoid placing your most demanding theme-park days immediately either side of it. A relaxed evening after the water park can make the following morning considerably easier.

🗓️ Planning a two-week Florida holiday? Our Ultimate 14-Day Orlando Itinerary for UK Families shows how we’d balance Disney, Universal, SeaWorld, water parks and rest days without trying to cram too much into every day.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Orlando Water Parks?

Orlando’s warm climate means water parks can be part of a Florida holiday for much of the year, but the experience can vary considerably depending on when you visit.

Spring can be an excellent time for water parks, with warm weather and often more comfortable temperatures than the height of summer.

Summer brings some of the hottest weather, making a water park extremely appealing. However, afternoon thunderstorms are common in Florida, and attractions may temporarily close when lightning is nearby.

Autumn can still offer excellent water-park weather, although families travelling during hurricane season should keep an eye on forecasts as their holiday approaches.

Winter is less predictable. Orlando can still have beautifully warm days, but cooler spells do occur and water-park operating schedules can vary.

What Happens If There Is a Thunderstorm?

Florida thunderstorms can develop quickly, particularly during the warmer months. Outdoor water attractions may temporarily close when lightning is detected nearby and reopen when conditions are considered safe.

If storms are forecast, we’d usually favour an earlier start rather than planning to arrive halfway through the afternoon.

Our Verdict: Which of the Best Water Parks in Orlando Should You Choose?

Orlando has three excellent major water parks, and we’d happily include any of them in a family holiday. The best choice ultimately depends on your children’s ages, the theme parks you’re already visiting and which tickets you’ve bought.

For the strongest overall experience, our winner is Universal Volcano Bay. Krakatau, the tropical theming and attractions ranging from Krakatau Aqua Coaster to Ko’okiri Body Plunge make it feel closer to a fully themed park than a traditional water park.

Aquatica Orlando would be our choice for families with children of different ages. It combines major slides with rivers, wave pools and dedicated children’s areas, making it particularly easy to keep both younger children and thrill-seeking teenagers entertained.

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon is our choice for Disney families wanting a more relaxed water-park day. Its famous Surf Pool produces waves reaching six feet, while the overall experience provides a nice change of pace from consecutive days in Disney’s main theme parks.

🏆 Holiday Blueprint Final Rankings

🥇 Best Overall — Universal Volcano Bay
Best combination of theming, thrills and family attractions.

🥈 Best for Mixed-Age Families — Aquatica Orlando
Excellent variety for younger children, families and serious slide fans.

🥉 Best for Disney Families — Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon
A brilliant choice for a more relaxed Disney day with an outstanding wave pool.

Best for Teenagers — Universal Volcano Bay

Best for Younger Children — Aquatica Orlando

Our choice: If we were planning a two-week Orlando holiday and could visit only one water park, we’d choose Volcano Bay. If our park tickets already included another water park, however, we’d strongly consider using what’s included rather than paying separately — all three are good enough to justify a day in your itinerary.

One important 2027 planning note

Planning for early 2027? Universal currently says Volcano Bay will close for scheduled maintenance from 26 October 2026, with reopening planned on or before 24 March 2027. Always check the official operating calendar before finalising your water-park day.

Orlando Water Parks FAQs

What Is the Best Water Park in Orlando?

Universal Volcano Bay is our overall winner.

It offers the strongest combination of immersive theming, major thrill slides, family attractions and relaxing areas. However, Aquatica may be better for mixed-age families, while Typhoon Lagoon is an excellent choice if you’re already visiting Walt Disney World.

Which Orlando Water Park Is Best for Teenagers?

We’d choose Volcano Bay, particularly for families with teenagers who enjoy thrill rides.

Aquatica is a very close second and may actually suit teenagers who simply want to spend as much time as possible riding different water slides.

Which Orlando Water Park Is Best for Younger Children?

Aquatica gets our vote for younger families, thanks to its dedicated children’s areas and wide range of attractions for different ages.

Typhoon Lagoon is also excellent for younger visitors, while Volcano Bay has dedicated children’s areas alongside its bigger attractions.

Are Life Jackets Available at Orlando Water Parks?

Yes. The major Orlando water parks provide life jackets for guests. For example, Disney currently provides complimentary life jackets on self-service racks at Typhoon Lagoon, while Aquatica provides approved life vests free of charge in a range of sizes.

Can You Take Food Into Orlando Water Parks?

The rules differ between parks, so always check before visiting.

Disney allows coolers at its water parks subject to restrictions, including no glass, alcohol or loose/dry ice. Aquatica generally doesn’t allow outside food, drinks or coolers apart from water, although exceptions can be made for dietary requirements and baby food or formula.

Do Orlando Water Parks Have Lockers?

Yes. We’d recommend using one for phones, wallets, car keys and dry clothes.

Disney’s water parks currently have keyless all-day lockers, while Aquatica has several all-day locker rental locations around the park.

Is a Water Park Worth Adding to a Two-Week Orlando Holiday?

Definitely, in our opinion.

A water-park day gives you something completely different from another full theme-park day and can provide a welcome change of pace during a busy two-week itinerary.

We’d normally position one between major theme-park days rather than squeezing it into an already packed day.

Orlando Park Tickets for UK Visitors (2027): How to Get the Best Value

Orlando theme park tickets for UK visitors 2027

Orlando park tickets for UK visitors can be one of the biggest expenses when planning a Florida holiday. With Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, Epic Universe, SeaWorld and Busch Gardens all competing for your time and budget, choosing the right Orlando theme park tickets can quickly become confusing.

Should you buy tickets before leaving the UK? Are 14-day tickets actually good value? Is Park Hopper worth paying extra for? And is it cheaper to buy Disney and Universal tickets separately or as part of a combined package?

In this guide, we’ll break down the main Orlando theme park ticket options for UK families, explain what you’re actually getting for your money and show you how to choose the best-value tickets for your own itinerary — rather than simply buying the biggest ticket package available.

Affiliate disclosure: Some links on this page are affiliate links. If you book through them, Holiday Blueprint may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This helps support the site and allows us to keep creating useful travel guides.

Quick Guide: Which Orlando Theme Park Tickets Should You Compare?

Disney is your priority? Start by comparing 7-day and 14-day Disney Magic Tickets. Check the start-date price, water park access and any included extras.

Universal and Epic Universe are your priority? Compare Universal multi-park tickets and check that Epic Universe is explicitly included. If Volcano Bay matters, check whether your travel dates and ticket cover it.

Want SeaWorld and Busch Gardens too? Compare a SeaWorld multi-park option rather than automatically buying separate tickets, and check parking and visit limits.

Want a mixture of everything? List your must-do parks first. The best-value combination may be two smaller packages rather than paying for every park across two weeks.

Compare the exact ticket inclusions, travel dates and final family price before booking. Ticket products and park operating schedules can change.

How Much Do Orlando Park Tickets Cost in 2027?

Theme park tickets are likely to be one of the biggest costs of an Orlando holiday. For a UK family visiting several major resorts, it’s quite possible to spend well over £1,000 on park admission alone, with the final total depending on which parks you visit, how many days you need and the ticket type you choose.

Ticket prices also change throughout the year, so rather than choosing purely on the headline price, compare how many park days you actually receive, which parks are included and any extras bundled with the ticket.

Walt Disney World Tickets

UK and Ireland visitors can buy Disney Magic Tickets before travelling, with 7-day and 14-day options available for 2027. For families spending two weeks in Orlando, the 14-day ticket is often the first option worth comparing.

Disney prices vary according to your selected start date, so check the cost for your actual travel dates rather than relying on an old headline price. Interestingly, the 14-day ticket can sometimes offer much better value than the 7-day option, particularly when Disney is running UK ticket promotions.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t automatically buy a shorter Disney ticket because you’re only planning five or six Disney days. Compare the 7-day and 14-day Magic Ticket prices first — the longer ticket can sometimes provide considerably more flexibility for relatively little extra cost.

🏰 Compare Walt Disney World Tickets

Planning your Disney park days? Compare FloridaTix Walt Disney World ticket options for UK visitors and choose the ticket that best suits your family and length of stay.

Universal Orlando & Epic Universe Tickets

Universal’s UK ticket options for 2027 include Epic Universe, alongside Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. For many UK families, the 14-day tickets are particularly attractive because they allow you to spread your Universal visits across the holiday rather than trying to cram everything into two or three consecutive days.

The main options include the Universal Orlando All Parks Ticket, which covers Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe and Volcano Bay, and the Universal Orlando Three Park Adventure Ticket, which covers Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe.

Which ticket is available can depend on your travel dates and any scheduled park closures. In particular, check the current Volcano Bay operating calendar and the exact Universal ticket inclusions for your holiday before buying.

Park-to-Park access is particularly useful if you want to ride the Hogwarts Express between Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, and the UK multi-day products provide much more flexibility than buying separate one-day tickets.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: If Epic Universe is a must-do, don’t assume every older Universal ticket product includes it. Check the exact parks listed on the ticket before paying — particularly when comparing deals from different ticket sellers.

🎢 Compare Universal Orlando Tickets

Planning to visit Universal Orlando? Compare FloridaTix ticket options for Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe, including multi-park options for UK visitors.

SeaWorld Orlando & Busch Gardens Tickets

SeaWorld and Busch Gardens ticket sellers offer several ticket combinations covering SeaWorld Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, Aquatica Orlando and Adventure Island. If you’re planning to visit more than one of these parks, a multi-park ticket can offer significantly better value than buying individual admission for each day.

For UK families, the most important thing is to compare how many parks and visits are included, rather than simply looking for the cheapest ticket. Some multi-park options allow unlimited visits within a set period, which can be useful if you want a full day at SeaWorld followed by a separate day at Aquatica or Busch Gardens.

Remember that Busch Gardens is in Tampa, not Orlando, so factor the journey into your itinerary before buying a ticket purely because it’s included in a package. If you’re already planning to visit Busch Gardens, however, combining it with SeaWorld and Aquatica can make excellent sense.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Before buying a SeaWorld multi-park ticket, check whether parking is included. With parking at the parks adding a meaningful extra cost, an option that includes parking could be better value even if its headline ticket price is slightly higher.

Orlando theme park tickets comparison for UK visitors

Should You Buy Orlando Theme Park Tickets in the UK or Florida?

For most UK families, buying Orlando theme park tickets before travelling to Florida is usually the easiest option. It gives you time to compare ticket types and authorised sellers properly, spread the cost of the holiday and know exactly which parks you’ve paid for before you arrive.

Buying Orlando tickets in the UK isn’t always cheaper, but UK visitors can sometimes get better-value ticket packages that aren’t available in the same form once you arrive in Florida. Always compare the total price, number of park days and what’s included rather than assuming buying in either the UK or Orlando will automatically be cheaper.

UK visitors can also have access to ticket products specifically designed for the UK market, including longer-duration Disney and Universal options that may provide better value than buying individual park days once you’re in Orlando.

Buying in advance becomes even more important when your itinerary includes several different resorts. With Disney, Universal, Epic Universe, SeaWorld and Busch Gardens potentially competing for your time, deciding on your tickets early helps you build a realistic park schedule rather than buying admission you eventually don’t use.

Buying Direct from the Theme Parks

Buying directly from Disney, Universal or SeaWorld gives you the reassurance of purchasing from the park operator itself. It’s always worth checking the official price so you have a baseline to compare against other authorised ticket sellers.

Buying from UK Orlando Ticket Specialists

Reputable UK ticket specialists can sometimes offer competitive prices, bundles or payment options. The important thing is to compare like for like — a cheaper-looking ticket isn’t necessarily better value if it includes fewer parks, fewer days or different benefits.

Before buying, check exactly what’s included, the cancellation or amendment terms, how your tickets are delivered and whether the seller is an authorised ticket provider.

Should You Wait Until You Arrive in Orlando?

Usually, there is little advantage in deliberately waiting until you arrive. You’ll have less time to compare your options, and buying tickets at the last minute can make budgeting and itinerary planning more difficult.

There can occasionally be promotions or circumstances where buying locally makes sense, but for a carefully planned UK family holiday, we’d generally prefer to have the major park tickets sorted before flying.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Before paying, open the official park website in another tab and compare the ticket you’re considering line by line. Check the parks included, number of days, Park Hopper or Park-to-Park access, water parks, parking and any other extras — not just the final price.

Are 7-Day or 14-Day Orlando Theme Park Tickets Better Value?

For UK visitors taking a typical two-week Orlando holiday, longer-duration tickets can look expensive at first, but the cost per usable park day can be considerably lower than buying several individual admission days.

The important question isn’t simply “Which ticket is cheaper?” It’s how many days you’ll realistically use it. A 14-day ticket isn’t good value if your itinerary only allows three park visits, but it can be excellent value if you want the freedom to revisit favourite parks, spend shorter days in the parks or change plans because of weather or tiredness.

When a 7-Day Ticket Makes Sense

A shorter ticket can work well if you’re splitting your holiday between several different resorts or leaving plenty of time for pool days, shopping and other attractions. It can also help prevent the temptation to fill every day with theme parks simply because you’ve paid for unlimited access.

When a 14-Day Ticket Makes Sense

A 14-day option becomes particularly attractive when one resort will form a major part of your holiday. Instead of feeling that every visit needs to be a full rope-drop-to-fireworks day, you can potentially visit for a few hours, return to your hotel and come back another day.

This flexibility can be especially useful for families with children and during hotter or busier periods when rest days can make the holiday much more enjoyable.

Don’t Compare Tickets by Number of Days Alone

Check the validity period and exact admission rules. “14-day ticket” doesn’t necessarily mean every ticket product works in exactly the same way. Look at when the validity period starts, whether visits must be consecutive, which parks are included and whether Park Hopper, Park-to-Park, water parks or other extras are part of the package.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Build a rough Orlando itinerary before buying your tickets. Mark every Disney, Universal, SeaWorld and Busch Gardens day you genuinely expect to use. Then compare the ticket options against that itinerary — not the other way around.

7-day vs 14-day Orlando theme park tickets comparison for UK families

Hidden Costs to Budget for Beyond Orlando Theme Park Tickets

The ticket price is only part of the cost of visiting Orlando’s theme parks. Once you add parking, food, skip-the-line options and other extras, a family can easily spend considerably more than expected.

Planning for these costs before you travel gives you a much more realistic holiday budget — and avoids a few nasty surprises when you arrive.

Theme Park Parking

If you’re hiring a car, parking can become a significant extra expense, particularly if you’re visiting parks on several days. Planning to drive in Florida? Our Orlando car hire guide for UK travellers covers insurance, tolls, fuel, driving tips and ways to avoid unnecessary rental costs.

Disney, Universal, SeaWorld and Busch Gardens all have their own parking arrangements and prices can change, so check the latest charges before travelling.

Money-saving tip: If your hotel provides transport to the parks, compare the convenience and cost against driving and paying for parking each day.

Lightning Lane and Universal Express Pass

Standard admission doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll want to rely solely on regular standby queues.

Disney’s paid Lightning Lane options and Universal Express Pass can substantially increase the cost of a park day, particularly during busy periods.

The important thing is that you don’t automatically need them every day. Choosing which parks and dates would benefit most can save a considerable amount.

Food and Drinks

Food is one of the easiest costs to underestimate.

A family spending an entire day inside a theme park could potentially buy breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and drinks before even considering character dining or more expensive restaurants.

Check each park’s current rules regarding bringing your own food and drinks, because taking some snacks and refillable water bottles can help keep costs under control.

Lockers and Other Extras

Depending on the park and attractions you’re visiting, you may also need to budget for things such as:

  • Lockers
  • Photo packages
  • Souvenirs
  • Stroller rental
  • Ponchos
  • Character dining
  • Preferred parking
  • Transport between your hotel and the parks

None of these individually has to destroy the budget, but over a two-week Orlando holiday they can quickly add up.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Create two figures when budgeting: your ticket cost and your realistic park-day spending budget. Keeping them separate makes it much easier to see what your Orlando theme park days are actually costing.

Are Park Hopper and Park-to-Park Tickets Worth It?

Being able to visit more than one theme park on the same day sounds brilliant, but whether it’s worth paying for depends heavily on how you plan your holiday.

For some families, hopping between parks adds flexibility and lets you make better use of shorter park days. For others, travelling between parks simply eats into valuable ride time.

Disney Park Hopper

Disney Park Hopper allows you to visit more than one Walt Disney World theme park on the same day. This can be particularly useful on a longer holiday — for example, spending the morning at Animal Kingdom before heading elsewhere later in the day.

UK Disney Magic Tickets commonly bundle Park Hopper access, so check what your ticket already includes before comparing it with US ticket prices.

Universal Park-to-Park

At Universal Orlando, Park-to-Park access has an additional attraction: it’s required if you want to travel between Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure aboard the Hogwarts Express.

That makes Park-to-Park particularly appealing for Harry Potter fans who want to experience both Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade as part of the same day.

Is It Worth It for Your Family?

If you’re visiting Orlando for two weeks and have flexible multi-day tickets, park hopping can be genuinely useful. If you’ve only allocated one day to each park, however, trying to squeeze two major parks into a single day can sometimes make the experience feel rushed.

Don’t pay extra purely because hopping sounds useful. Look at your itinerary first and decide how often you’re realistically going to use it.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: If the ticket you’re considering already includes Park Hopper or Park-to-Park access, treat it as a useful bonus rather than a reason to cram two parks into every day.

How to Avoid Orlando Theme Park Ticket Scams

Orlando theme park tickets are expensive, so it’s understandable to look for the cheapest possible deal. Unfortunately, that also creates opportunities for unofficial sellers and offers that are simply too good to be true.

Saving £20 or £30 isn’t worth risking hundreds — or potentially thousands — of pounds on tickets that don’t work when you reach the park gates.

Buy from the Park or an Established Ticket Seller

The safest options are buying directly from the theme park or through an established, authorised ticket seller.

Before buying from a company you haven’t used before, check who operates the website, whether there are clear UK contact details, what the cancellation terms are and exactly how your tickets will be supplied.

Be Wary of Deals That Look Too Cheap

If one seller is dramatically cheaper than every major ticket company, investigate why before paying.

Genuine promotions happen, but huge discounts on high-value Disney or Universal tickets should make you cautious — particularly when the offer appears through social media, an online marketplace or an unfamiliar website.

Never Buy Partially Used Tickets

Avoid anyone offering leftover or partially used theme park tickets. Modern theme park admission is generally linked to the original ticket holder and subject to the operator’s terms, so a ticket that worked for somebody else isn’t something you should assume you can simply take over.

Check Exactly What You’re Buying

Some deals can look identical at first glance while actually including different parks, validity periods or benefits.

Before paying, check the exact ticket name, parks included, number of days, expiry or validity rules and whether features such as Park Hopper, Park-to-Park or water park admission are included.

Pay Using a Protected Payment Method

For expensive ticket purchases, consider the protections available with your chosen payment method. UK credit-card purchases may receive additional legal protection in qualifying circumstances, while other payment providers can have their own dispute processes.

Don’t send money by bank transfer to an unknown individual simply because they’re offering an unusually cheap deal.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Find the ticket you want first, then compare the same ticket across reputable sellers. The cheapest genuine like-for-like deal is much more useful than the cheapest-looking headline price.

Which Orlando Theme Park Tickets Should You Buy for a 14-Night Holiday?

There isn’t one perfect Orlando ticket combination for every family. The best choice depends on which parks matter most to you, how many rest days you want and whether you’re trying to experience everything in one holiday.

Still deciding which resort deserves more of your holiday? Read our Disney vs Universal guide for UK families to compare the parks before choosing your tickets.

For a 14-night trip, we’d avoid choosing tickets simply because they cover the most parks. Start with the attractions your family genuinely doesn’t want to miss, then build the ticket package around them.

If you’re still building your itinerary, our complete Orlando holiday planning guide for UK visitors covers the wider trip, including where to stay, when to visit and how to plan your park days.

Option 1: The Disney-Focused Holiday

If Walt Disney World is the main reason for your trip, a longer-duration Disney ticket gives you the flexibility to spread your visits across the holiday rather than squeezing all four parks into consecutive days.

You could then add Universal separately if you particularly want to experience Epic Universe, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter or Universal’s thrill rides.

Best for: Younger families, big Disney fans and anyone wanting plenty of flexibility to revisit favourite Disney parks.

Option 2: The Universal & Thrill-Ride Holiday

If roller coasters and newer attractions are higher on your family’s wish list, Universal can form the centre of the holiday instead.

A multi-day Universal ticket covering Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe gives you time to experience the resorts without rushing. Depending on your travel dates and ticket product, Volcano Bay may also be included.

You could then add selected Disney days rather than automatically committing a large proportion of the holiday to Walt Disney World.

Best for: Families with older children, teenagers and anyone prioritising thrill rides and Epic Universe.

Option 3: The “We Want to Do Everything” Holiday

Plenty of UK families understandably want Disney and Universal, then also have SeaWorld, Busch Gardens or a water park on their wish list.

It’s possible — but this is where itinerary planning becomes particularly important. Filling a two-week holiday with theme parks can become exhausting surprisingly quickly.

If you’re buying tickets covering all the major resorts, deliberately schedule rest days or lighter days between some of the bigger parks. Having admission available doesn’t mean you need to spend every possible day inside a theme park.

Best for: First-time visitors who want to experience as much of Orlando as possible and families comfortable with a busy holiday.

Option 4: The Best-Value Mix

If budget matters more than ticking off every park, ask each family member to choose their two or three absolute must-do parks.

Build the holiday around those first. You may discover that skipping one expensive ticket package leaves hundreds of pounds available for better accommodation, meals, shopping or other Orlando experiences.

Best for: Families trying to keep the overall Florida holiday budget under control.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t measure value by the number of parks included. The best-value ticket is the one your family actually uses. Paying less for six brilliant park days can be far better value than paying more for fourteen days of admission you don’t have time to enjoy.

Orlando Theme Park Tickets for UK Visitors: FAQs

How Much Should a UK Family Budget for Orlando Theme Park Tickets?

For a UK family, theme park tickets can represent one of the biggest costs of an Orlando holiday. The amount you need to budget depends heavily on which resorts you want to visit and whether you’re buying Disney, Universal and SeaWorld tickets separately or combining several parks into your trip.

A family wanting to visit Disney and Universal including Epic Universe should expect to spend considerably more than a family choosing only one resort. Add SeaWorld, Busch Gardens or water parks and the total rises further.

Rather than setting your budget from a single advertised “from” price, calculate the total ticket cost for everyone travelling using the exact ticket products you’re considering. Then add the extra park-day costs we’ve covered above, such as parking, food and optional queue-skipping products.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Decide on your family’s must-do parks before buying tickets. Dropping just one ticket package that you aren’t particularly excited about can make a substantial difference to the overall holiday cost.

Do Orlando Theme Park Tickets Get More Expensive Closer to Your Holiday?

They can, but there isn’t a simple rule that Orlando theme park tickets will always be cheaper the earlier you buy them.

Ticket prices can change because of seasonal pricing, promotions, exchange rates and changes made by the theme park operators themselves. The price you see for your travel dates today therefore isn’t guaranteed to be available later.

For UK travellers, exchange rates can also make a noticeable difference when comparing tickets priced in US dollars with packages sold by UK ticket specialists.

If you’ve found the right tickets for your holiday at a price you’re comfortable with, don’t assume that waiting until the last minute will produce a better deal. Equally, compare several reputable sellers before booking rather than purchasing the first offer you see.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Compare like-for-like tickets and look at the final family price, what’s included and the booking conditions — not simply the biggest advertised discount.

What Age Counts as a Child for Orlando Theme Park Tickets?

Child ticket ages aren’t identical across every Orlando theme park, so it’s important to check the rules for each ticket you’re buying.

At Universal Orlando Resort, child tickets are currently for children aged 3–9, with guests aged 10 and over charged the adult ticket price.

SeaWorld Orlando requires children aged 3 and over to have admission, while children aged 2 and under enter free. Some SeaWorld ticket products distinguish children aged 3–9 from adults aged 10+.

Age rules can vary by ticket type and operator, so always check the conditions of the exact ticket you’re purchasing rather than assuming every Orlando park uses the same definition of a child.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: If your child will have a birthday before your holiday, enter their age at the time of travel when comparing ticket prices.

Do Children Under 3 Need Orlando Theme Park Tickets?

At the major Orlando theme parks, children under 3 generally don’t require a standard theme park admission ticket. This can make a noticeable difference to the cost of an Orlando holiday for families travelling with toddlers.

However, don’t assume that “under 3 goes free” means every additional experience is automatically free. Character meals, special events, reserved experiences and other extras can have their own rules, so check the conditions when booking anything separately.

If your child turns 3 during your holiday, check the relevant park’s current ticket policy before travelling so you know whether admission will be required for the later part of your trip.

Can You Buy Orlando Theme Park Tickets at the Gate?

Yes, tickets can generally be purchased at the major Orlando theme parks, subject to availability, but waiting until you reach the gate usually isn’t the approach we’d recommend for UK visitors.

Buying in advance gives you much more time to compare prices, ticket durations and inclusions, and it means one of the biggest holiday expenses is already sorted before you arrive.

It can also be important to check whether your chosen park requires or recommends any additional planning alongside admission, rather than assuming you can simply arrive on the day and get exactly the ticket or experience you want.

If your plans change unexpectedly while you’re in Florida, buying an additional ticket locally can still be useful — but for your main Disney, Universal or SeaWorld visits, we’d generally arrange admission beforehand.

Does Epic Universe Need a Separate Ticket?

Not necessarily. Epic Universe can be included as part of a Universal Orlando multi-park ticket, so UK visitors don’t automatically need to purchase a separate Epic Universe ticket.

Universal’s current UK store lists 2027 products including the Universal Orlando All Parks Ticket and Three Park Adventure Ticket, both of which include Epic Universe alongside Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. The All Parks option also includes Volcano Bay for applicable dates.

Universal also sells one-day admission to Epic Universe, so travellers who don’t want a larger Universal ticket can potentially visit Epic Universe separately.

The important thing is to check the exact name and inclusions of the ticket you’re buying. Don’t assume that every Universal ticket automatically includes Epic Universe.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: If Epic Universe is one of your must-do parks, look for “Epic Universe” specifically in the ticket inclusions before paying.

Are Orlando Water Parks Included with Theme Park Tickets?

Sometimes — but it depends entirely on the ticket you buy. Don’t assume that buying admission to a company’s main theme parks automatically gives you access to its water parks.

Walt Disney World: UK Disney Magic Tickets can include access to Disney’s water parks alongside the four main theme parks, subject to the terms, availability and operating dates of the ticket you purchase.

Universal Orlando: Volcano Bay is included with Universal ticket products that specifically list it. Universal’s 2027 UK All Parks Ticket includes Volcano Bay for applicable dates, while other Universal ticket products may cover only Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe.

SeaWorld Parks: Aquatica Orlando can be included with certain multi-park ticket packages alongside SeaWorld Orlando and Busch Gardens, but again you need to check the exact product you’re buying.

The safest approach is to look at the individual parks listed on the ticket, rather than relying on terms such as “multi-park” or “14-day ticket”.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: If a water park is important to your holiday, check its planned opening dates or refurbishment closures before choosing a ticket package purely because water-park admission is included.

Final Thoughts: Getting the Best Value from Orlando Theme Park Tickets

Not sure how to fit all those parks into two weeks? Our 14-Day Orlando Itinerary for UK Families (2027) shows how to combine Disney, Universal, Epic Universe, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, a water park and rest days without trying to do everything at once.

Orlando theme park tickets for UK visitors aren’t cheap, but choosing the right tickets can make a huge difference to both your holiday budget and how much you enjoy your time in Florida.

For most UK visitors, the best approach is to plan your itinerary first and buy your tickets second. Decide which parks are genuinely must-do experiences, work out how many park days you realistically want, and then compare ticket packages that match those plans.

Don’t automatically choose the ticket covering the most parks or the longest period. Look carefully at what’s included, compare reputable sellers and factor in additional costs such as parking, food and optional queue-skipping products.

For a two-week Orlando holiday, leaving room for rest days, pool time and spontaneous changes of plan can be just as valuable as squeezing in another theme park.

For UK families looking for the cheapest Orlando tickets, the lowest-priced option isn’t always the best value. Compare how many park days you actually need, which parks are included and any extras before booking. Ultimately, the best Orlando theme park ticket is the one that gives your family the experiences you actually want at a price you’re comfortable paying.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Keep this guide bookmarked while planning your holiday. Ticket products and promotions can change, and we’ll keep this guide updated as new 2027 Orlando theme park ticket information becomes available.

Orlando Car Hire for UK Travellers (2027): Everything You Need to Know

Orlando car hire for UK travellers driving in Florida

Orlando car hire for UK travellers can completely change the way you experience Florida, but it can also raise plenty of questions. Do you actually need a car? Which insurance should you choose? How do Florida tolls work? And is hiring a car cheaper than using Uber or Lyft?

In this guide, we’ll explain everything UK travellers need to know about Orlando car hire, from collecting your car at the airport and understanding insurance to tolls, parking, fuel and driving in Florida. We’ll also help you decide whether hiring a car is actually worth it for your holiday.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t compare car hire using the headline rental price alone. Insurance, tolls, parking, fuel and extras can make a cheap-looking rental considerably more expensive.

🚗 Compare Orlando Car Hire Prices

Ready to see what your dates might cost? Compare car hire options from multiple rental companies before booking, and check the total price carefully for insurance, mileage, deposit and fuel conditions.

Do You Need to Hire a Car in Orlando?

The short answer is no — you don’t need to hire a car to enjoy Orlando, but having one can make certain holidays considerably easier. Whether it’s worth the extra cost depends mainly on where you’re staying and which attractions you plan to visit.

If you’re staying at a Disney or Universal resort and spending most of your holiday in the theme parks, you can potentially rely on resort transport combined with Uber or Lyft. But if you’re planning to visit SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, shopping outlets, supermarkets or attractions further afield, having your own car gives you much more freedom.

For families splitting their time between several different parts of Orlando, car hire can also save a lot of waiting around. On the other hand, once you include parking, tolls, fuel and insurance, hiring a car isn’t automatically the cheapest option.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t assume you need a hire car for your entire holiday. For some families, hiring one for only part of a two-week trip can offer the best balance between freedom and cost.

Orlando car hire for UK travellers vs Uber and Lyft

How Much Does Car Hire Cost in Orlando?

Orlando car hire prices can vary enormously depending on the time of year, length of rental, size of car and how far in advance you book. You may see an attractive headline price when searching online, but the cheapest quote isn’t always the cheapest option once everything is included.

For UK travellers, the most important thing is to compare the total rental cost. Check exactly what insurance is included and whether you’ll need to pay separately for tolls, parking, fuel, additional drivers or extras such as child seats.

Costs to Include in Your Orlando Car Hire Budget

🚗 Car rental: The basic cost of hiring the vehicle.

🛡️ Insurance: Check carefully what is already included in your UK booking before paying for additional cover at the rental desk.

🅿️ Parking: Theme parks, some hotels and other attractions may charge for parking, so this can become a significant extra cost over a two-week holiday.

🛣️ Tolls: Many roads around Orlando use electronic tolling, and rental companies can have different toll programmes and fees.

⛽ Fuel: You’ll need to budget for petrol and understand the rental company’s fuel-return policy.

👨‍👩‍👧 Extras: Child seats, additional drivers, vehicle upgrades and other optional extras can increase the total considerably.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: When comparing two car hire deals, calculate what each one is likely to cost from collection to return, rather than choosing whichever has the lowest price on the search-results page.

Orlando car hire costs guide for UK families including insurance, tolls, parking and fuel

Is It Better to Hire a Car or Use Uber in Orlando?

For many UK families, this is one of the biggest decisions when planning an Orlando holiday. Hiring a car gives you complete freedom, but once you add insurance, tolls, fuel and parking, the total cost can be considerably higher than the headline rental price.

Uber and Lyft can work particularly well if you’re staying close to Disney or Universal and mainly travelling between your hotel, the theme parks and nearby restaurants. You avoid parking charges, toll arrangements and the hassle of driving on unfamiliar roads.

However, a hire car becomes much more useful if you’re planning to visit places further afield, such as Busch Gardens, Kennedy Space Center, shopping outlets or beaches, or if you want the freedom to visit supermarkets and restaurants away from the main tourist areas.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t automatically assume one option is cheaper. Work out your likely journeys first, then compare the total car-hire cost with the estimated cost of using Uber or Lyft throughout your holiday.

Which would we choose?

For a typical two-week Orlando family holiday with several Disney and Universal days, we’d consider Uber/Lyft if most of the trip is centred around the parks. But for a holiday involving lots of exploring beyond the main resort areas, we’d lean towards hiring a car for the extra flexibility.

Orlando Car Hire Insurance Explained for UK Travellers

Car hire insurance in the US can look confusing, particularly when you’re used to hiring cars in the UK or Europe. You’ll see terms such as CDW, LDW and liability insurance, and you may also be offered additional products when you collect the car.

The most important rule is to check exactly what your booking already includes before you travel. Car hire packages sold to UK customers can include different levels of cover, so don’t assume that an insurance product offered at the rental desk is something you actually need.

CDW and LDW

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) generally reduce or waive your financial responsibility if the hire car is damaged or stolen, subject to the terms and exclusions of your rental agreement. Check whether this is included in your booking and whether an excess or deductible applies.

Liability Insurance

Liability cover relates to claims involving injury to other people or damage to their property. The amount and type of cover can vary, so this is another part of your rental agreement worth checking carefully before you leave the UK.

At the Rental Desk

You may be offered additional insurance or protection products when collecting the vehicle. Don’t feel pressured into agreeing immediately. Ask what the product covers, how much it costs and whether your existing booking already provides similar protection.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Save a copy of your rental confirmation and insurance details on your phone before travelling. If you’re offered additional cover at the desk, you can check what you already have before agreeing to anything.

How Do Tolls Work When Driving in Orlando?

Toll roads are common around Orlando, particularly on routes to and from Orlando International Airport and when travelling around Central Florida. Many tolls are collected electronically, so it’s worth understanding how your hire car will handle them before you start driving.

Most major rental companies offer their own toll-payment programme. This can be convenient because tolls can be linked automatically to the rental vehicle, but additional daily, service or administration fees may apply depending on the rental company and programme you use. Always check the toll terms in your individual rental agreement before driving on Florida’s toll roads.

What Is SunPass?

SunPass is Florida’s electronic toll-payment system. Vehicles using a compatible transponder or participating toll arrangement can pass through electronic toll points without stopping to make a cash payment.

Can You Use Your Own SunPass in a Hire Car?

Depending on your rental agreement and the toll option you choose, it may be possible to use your own compatible toll solution. However, you should check the latest guidance and make sure the hire vehicle isn’t also being charged through the rental company’s own programme.

Whatever option you use, don’t simply ignore a toll. If a toll isn’t paid correctly, the charge may eventually be passed through the rental company along with additional fees.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Before leaving the rental-car collection area, ask exactly how tolls will be charged on your vehicle. Knowing whether you’re using the rental company’s programme or another payment method can prevent an unpleasant surprise after you return home.

Orlando Car Hire for UK Travellers at Orlando International Airport (MCO)

Orlando International Airport is one of the most convenient places to collect a hire car, particularly if you want a vehicle for your entire holiday. Several major rental companies operate at or close to the airport, while others may require a shuttle to an off-airport location.

After a long flight from the UK, the last thing you want is to discover that you’re missing something at the rental desk. Keep your driving licence, passport, booking confirmation and the payment card required by your rental company somewhere easy to reach.

On-Airport vs Off-Airport Car Hire

An on-airport rental can be more convenient because you can collect your vehicle without travelling far from the terminal. An off-airport company may sometimes offer a lower price, but factor in the time and convenience of getting to and from the rental location before deciding.

Before You Drive Away

Take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the car before leaving. Adjust the mirrors and seat, work out the lights and wipers, connect your navigation and check which side the fuel cap is on.

It’s also sensible to photograph or video the vehicle, including the wheels and any existing marks or damage, before you leave the collection area. Keep the photos until the rental has been closed and any deposit has been released.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t make your first experience of driving on the right any harder than necessary. Set your hotel destination in your navigation before moving the car, then take your time leaving the airport.

Driving in Orlando for the First Time: What UK Drivers Need to Know

Driving in Orlando can feel strange for the first few miles, but most UK drivers adjust surprisingly quickly. Roads around the main tourist areas are generally wide and well signposted, although traffic can become very busy around the theme parks and major junctions.

Drive on the Right

The biggest adjustment is remembering to drive on the right-hand side of the road. Take extra care when leaving car parks, petrol stations and quieter side roads, where habit can easily take over.

Turning Right on Red

In Florida, drivers can generally turn right at a red traffic light after coming to a complete stop, provided there isn’t a sign prohibiting it and the way is clear. You must still give way to pedestrians and other traffic.

Four-Way Stops

At a four-way stop, every vehicle must stop. Generally, the vehicle that arrived first goes first. If vehicles arrive at the same time, give way according to the applicable right-of-way rules rather than simply following the car in front.

Speed Limits

Florida speed limits are shown in miles per hour (mph), just like in the UK. Pay attention to posted limits because they can change considerably between residential roads, major highways and areas around schools.

School Buses

Treat stopped school buses very seriously. On a two-way road, traffic travelling in both directions must stop when a school bus is displaying its stop signal. On a divided highway with a raised barrier or an unpaved median at least five feet wide, traffic travelling in the opposite direction does not have to stop, although vehicles travelling behind the bus still must. Always follow the current Florida road rules and never pass a school bus displaying its stop signal.

Using Your Phone

Florida law prohibits texting while driving, and handheld wireless-device use is also prohibited in designated school crossings, school zones and active work zones. The safest option for visitors is to set your navigation before moving and use a hands-free setup so you can concentrate fully on the road.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Your first drive doesn’t need to be ambitious. If you’ve just arrived after a long transatlantic flight, drive straight to your accommodation, get comfortable with the car and save the longer journeys for when you’re rested.

UK driver's Orlando checklist for driving in Florida

Buying Petrol in Orlando: What UK Drivers Need to Know

Filling up a hire car in Orlando is straightforward once you know how US petrol stations work, but there are a few differences that can confuse UK visitors the first time. Petrol is normally called gas, prices are displayed per US gallon rather than per litre, and many pumps require payment before you start filling.

Paying for Fuel

Many petrol stations allow you to pay directly at the pump. However, some pumps ask for a US ZIP code when using a card, which can occasionally cause problems with UK-issued cards. If your card isn’t accepted at the pump, the simplest option is usually to go inside and pay at the counter.

Which Fuel Should You Use?

Check the label inside the fuel flap, the vehicle information or ask the rental company if you’re unsure which fuel your hire car requires. Don’t simply choose a fuel based on what you normally put in your car at home.

Understanding US Fuel Prices

Fuel prices in Florida are normally advertised per US gallon. One US gallon is approximately 3.785 litres, so remember this when comparing the displayed price with what you’re used to paying in the UK.

Check Your Rental Fuel Policy

Your rental agreement should explain how much fuel you’re expected to return the vehicle with. If you’re required to return it full, allow enough time to refuel close to the rental location before handing the car back.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Take a photograph of the fuel gauge when you collect the car and again when you return it. Keep the final petrol receipt too, particularly if you’ve filled up shortly before returning the vehicle.

How Much Does Parking Cost at Orlando Theme Parks?

Parking can make a surprisingly big difference to the true cost of hiring a car in Orlando. If you’re visiting several theme parks during your holiday, you could easily spend a few hundred dollars on parking alone.

Walt Disney World

Standard theme park parking is currently $35 per car per day. One parking payment is valid across all four Disney theme parks on the same day. Registered Disney Resort hotel guests currently receive standard theme park parking at no additional charge.

Universal Orlando & Epic Universe

Regular self-parking currently costs $35 at the toll plaza, or $32 when prepaid for an eligible date. The same regular parking pricing applies to Universal’s main parking garage and the separate Epic Universe parking area.

SeaWorld Orlando

General parking currently starts at $37 plus tax, with preferred and VIP parking costing more.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

General parking currently starts from around $32–$35 plus tax, depending on the date/purchase option, with preferred parking costing more.

As an example, eight separate theme-park parking days at around $35 each would be roughly $280 before you’ve paid for your hire car, fuel or tolls.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Include parking when comparing car hire with Uber or Lyft. A rental car that looks cheaper at first can become considerably more expensive once you add a week or more of theme-park parking.

Parking prices checked August 2026 and are subject to change. Check the official park websites before travelling.

Do You Need a Hire Car for Disney World and Universal Orlando?

If most of your Orlando holiday is centred around Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando, you may not need a hire car every day. Both resort areas have transport options that can make getting between hotels and theme parks relatively straightforward.

Staying at Walt Disney World

Guests staying at Disney Resort hotels can use Disney’s complimentary transport network, including buses, boats, the Disney Skyliner and the Monorail, depending on the resort and destination. If most of your days are being spent at Disney, a hire car can therefore spend a surprising amount of time parked.

Staying at Universal Orlando

Universal hotel guests also have transport options to the parks, with shuttle buses and, at selected hotels, water taxis or walking routes. This can make a car unnecessary on days you’re staying entirely within Universal Orlando.

The calculation changes if you’re splitting your holiday between Disney and Universal, staying in a villa, visiting SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, Kennedy Space Center, shopping outlets or supermarkets, or planning other trips around Florida. That’s where having your own car becomes much more useful.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: A split car-hire strategy can work brilliantly in Orlando. You could use resort transport while staying on-site at Disney or Universal, then hire a car for the part of your holiday when you’re exploring further afield.

What Size Hire Car Do You Need in Orlando?

When choosing a hire car for Orlando, don’t look at the number of seats alone. Luggage space can be just as important, particularly when you first arrive at the airport with several large suitcases, hand luggage and possibly a pushchair.

Economy or Compact Car

Usually best for one or two travellers travelling light. They’re often among the cheapest options and can be economical on fuel, but luggage space may be limited for a family arriving from the UK.

Midsize or Full-Size Car

A good option for a small family that wants more passenger and boot space without moving up to a large SUV. Check the advertised luggage capacity rather than assuming every suitcase will fit.

SUV

SUVs are extremely popular in Orlando and can work well for families wanting more room and a higher driving position. However, SUV sizes vary considerably, so check both passenger and luggage capacity.

7-Seat SUV or Minivan

Larger families or groups may be better with a 7-seat SUV or minivan. Remember that using every passenger seat can dramatically reduce the space available for luggage, so a vehicle advertised for seven people won’t necessarily carry seven people plus seven large suitcases.

If you’re bringing child seats, a pushchair or several large cases, it’s usually worth choosing slightly more space than you think you’ll need rather than spending your first hour in Florida trying to squeeze everything into the boot.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Think about the airport journey with all your luggage, not just your everyday theme-park journeys. That’s normally when you’ll need the most space.

When and Where Should You Book Orlando Car Hire?

When planning Orlando car hire for UK travellers, it’s usually worth comparing prices well before your holiday rather than leaving it until you arrive.. Prices can change considerably depending on demand, travel dates and vehicle availability, particularly during busy school-holiday periods.

Compare More Than the Headline Price

Look at the total price for your rental, including the insurance provided, mileage allowance, additional-driver terms, fuel policy and any other charges shown in the booking conditions. A slightly more expensive deal can sometimes offer much better overall value.

Check the Cancellation Terms

If you find a competitive rate with free or flexible cancellation, booking earlier can give you some protection against prices rising while still allowing you to compare prices again before travelling. Always check the specific cancellation conditions before booking.

Airport vs Off-Airport Collection

Collecting at Orlando International Airport (MCO) is extremely convenient, but it’s still worth comparing other locations if they fit your plans. Remember to factor in the cost and inconvenience of reaching an off-airport rental location before choosing it simply because the headline price is lower.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Once you’ve booked, check prices again occasionally before your cancellation deadline. If the same type of car becomes significantly cheaper, your booking terms may allow you to cancel and rebook — but always check the conditions first.

🚗 Ready to compare Orlando car hire? Check current prices across different vehicle types and rental companies, and compare what’s included before choosing the best option for your trip.

How to Avoid Unexpected Orlando Car Hire Charges

A cheap Orlando car hire deal can become much more expensive if additional charges are added during or after the rental. Most surprises can be avoided by understanding the booking conditions before you travel and checking the rental agreement carefully when you collect the car.

Additional Drivers

Check whether your booking includes an additional driver or whether there is a daily charge. If two adults plan to share the driving, include this when comparing the total cost of different deals.

Child Seats

Rental companies normally charge extra for child seats, and the cost can add up over a two-week holiday. Check the price in advance and compare it with the practicalities and airline rules for bringing your own.

Vehicle Upgrades

You may be offered a larger or more expensive vehicle at the rental desk. An upgrade can be useful, particularly if your luggage won’t fit comfortably, but confirm whether it’s genuinely complimentary or how much extra you’ll pay before agreeing.

Late Returns

Rental periods are based on specific collection and return times. Returning the vehicle later than agreed could result in additional charges, so check your rental company’s grace period and late-return policy rather than assuming a small delay won’t matter.

Cleaning, Smoking and Damage Charges

Return the vehicle in reasonable condition and follow the rental company’s rules on smoking and cleaning. Keep the photographs or video you took at collection and take another set when you return the car.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Before leaving the rental desk, look at the final amount on the agreement, not just the paperwork you’ve been asked to sign. If you see an unfamiliar charge or optional product, ask what it is before accepting the vehicle.

What Documents Do UK Drivers Need to Hire a Car in Orlando?

UK travellers should make sure they have all the documents required by their rental company before flying to Florida. Requirements can vary between companies, so always check the terms of your individual booking rather than relying on a generic checklist.

Full UK Driving Licence

Take your full, valid UK photocard driving licence. Each person who will be registered as a driver should have their own valid licence and meet the rental company’s age and licence requirements.

Passport

Keep your passport accessible when collecting the vehicle, as the rental company may require identification in addition to your driving licence.

Payment Card

Check what type of credit or debit card your rental company accepts and whose name it needs to be in. Also check whether a security deposit or card authorisation will be required when you collect the vehicle.

Booking Confirmation

Keep your car hire voucher or booking confirmation available on your phone, ideally with an offline copy or screenshot in case you don’t have mobile data immediately after landing.

Do UK Drivers Need an International Driving Permit in Florida?

Visitors with a valid UK driving licence generally do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Florida, as UK licences are written in English. However, car hire companies can set their own documentation requirements, so always check the terms of your individual rental before travelling.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Put your driving licence, passport, booking confirmation and required payment card together in your hand luggage. Don’t pack anything needed for collecting the car in your checked suitcase.

Returning Your Hire Car at Orlando Airport

Returning your hire car should be straightforward, but on the day of your flight it’s worth allowing plenty of extra time. Orlando International Airport is large, and you’ll still need to return the vehicle, unload your luggage and make your way to the correct terminal.

Check Where You’re Returning the Car

Confirm the exact return location before setting off. If you collected from an off-airport rental location, don’t automatically assume the vehicle should be returned to the airport itself. Put the correct return location into your navigation before you leave.

Refuel Before Returning

Check your rental agreement to see how much fuel the vehicle should have when returned. If your agreement requires a full tank, fill up reasonably close to the return location and keep the fuel receipt.

Photograph the Car Again

Before handing over the keys, take a quick set of photos or a video showing the vehicle’s condition, mileage and fuel level. Keep these until the rental has been fully closed and you’re satisfied there are no unexpected charges.

Check the Car for Belongings

Before walking away, check the boot, door pockets, centre console and underneath the seats. Phones, passports, sunglasses and children’s devices are particularly easy to leave behind when you’re rushing to catch a flight.

Check Your Final Rental Receipt

Keep an eye out for your final rental receipt and check that the amount charged matches what you were expecting. If a security deposit or card authorisation was taken, remember that the time it takes to disappear from your account can depend on the rental company and your card provider.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Aim to arrive at the car-return location earlier than you think you need to. An extra 20–30 minutes is far less stressful than trying to sort out fuel, luggage or an unexpected rental issue when you’ve got a flight to catch.

Orlando Car Hire FAQs for UK Travellers

Is it difficult for UK tourists to drive in Orlando?

Most UK drivers find that driving in Orlando becomes comfortable fairly quickly. The biggest adjustment is driving on the right-hand side, particularly when turning at junctions or leaving car parks. Give yourself an easy first journey, use navigation and avoid starting with a long drive immediately after your flight if you’re tired.

Can I hire a car in Orlando with a UK driving licence?

Yes. UK visitors can generally hire a car in Orlando using a valid full UK driving licence, subject to the rental company’s own age, licence and identification requirements. Check the specific terms of your booking before travelling.

Do I need a credit card to hire a car in Orlando?

It depends on the rental company and the type of booking. Some companies may accept certain debit cards, while others require a credit card in the main driver’s name, particularly for the security deposit. Check the payment requirements before booking rather than waiting until you reach the rental desk.

Is it cheaper to hire a car or use Uber in Orlando?

There isn’t one answer for every family. If you’re mainly travelling between a hotel and Disney or Universal, Uber or Lyft may work out cheaper once car hire, parking, tolls and fuel are included. If you’re visiting lots of different attractions, shopping, eating off-site or taking day trips, a hire car may offer better value and considerably more flexibility.

Do I need a hire car if I’m staying at Disney World?

Not necessarily. Disney Resort hotel guests have access to complimentary transport around Walt Disney World, including buses and, on certain routes, boats, the Disney Skyliner and Monorail. You may still want a car if you’re regularly travelling outside Disney.

Do I need a hire car if I’m staying at Universal Orlando?

Not necessarily. Universal hotels provide transport options to the parks, and some resorts also offer walking routes or water taxis. If much of your stay is focused on Universal, you could potentially manage without a car for that part of the holiday.

How do I pay Orlando tolls in a hire car?

Rental companies offer different arrangements for paying Florida tolls, often using electronic toll systems. Check exactly how your rental company’s toll programme works before driving on toll roads, including any service or administration fees that may apply.

Can I hire a car for only part of my Orlando holiday?

Yes, and for some families this can be a very good strategy. You could use resort transport and Uber/Lyft while staying at Disney or Universal, then hire a car for several days when you want to visit shopping outlets, supermarkets, Busch Gardens, Kennedy Space Center or other destinations further afield.

What side of the road do you drive on in Orlando?

You drive on the right-hand side of the road in Florida. UK drivers should take particular care when first leaving car parks, petrol stations and quieter roads, where it’s easiest to revert to habit.

Should I book Orlando car hire before leaving the UK?

Usually, yes. Booking in advance gives you more time to compare prices, insurance, vehicle sizes and rental conditions. If you choose a booking with flexible cancellation, you may also be able to check prices again before travelling and rebook if you find a better deal, subject to the booking terms.

Is Orlando car hire worth it for a two-week holiday?

It can be, particularly if you’re planning to explore beyond Disney and Universal. However, you don’t necessarily need a car for all 14 days. For many families, hiring a car for only part of the holiday can provide a good balance between convenience and cost.

Is Hiring a Car in Orlando Worth It?

For many UK families, hiring a car in Orlando is worth it if you want the freedom to explore beyond the main theme-park resorts. It makes trips to supermarkets, shopping outlets, restaurants and attractions further afield much easier, and you’re not constantly arranging rides or waiting for transport.

However, a hire car isn’t essential for every Orlando holiday. If you’re staying on-site at Disney or Universal and spending most of your time in those resorts, using hotel transport alongside Uber or Lyft can make more sense — particularly once you factor in parking, tolls, fuel and the rental cost itself.

For many families, our favourite option is somewhere in the middle: hire a car for only the part of the holiday when you’ll actually use it.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Plan your itinerary before booking your car. Group together the days when you’ll need to travel further afield and you may discover that you only need a hire car for part of your trip.

Final Thoughts

Orlando car hire can give you enormous freedom, but the cheapest advertised rental isn’t necessarily the best-value deal. Compare the total cost, understand what insurance and toll arrangements are included, choose a vehicle with enough luggage space and read the rental conditions before booking.

For UK visitors nervous about driving in Florida, don’t let the idea of driving on the right put you off automatically. Give yourself an easy first journey, use navigation and take your time. Most drivers quickly become accustomed to the differences.

Whether you hire a car for two days, one week or your entire holiday, the right choice is simply the one that works best with your itinerary and budget.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t book a car simply because everyone says you “need one” in Orlando. Work out where you’re actually going first — then decide whether car hire, Uber/Lyft or a combination of both gives your family the best value.

Where to stay in Orlando in 2027 – best areas and hotels for UK families

Where Is the Best Area to Stay in Orlando?

When deciding where to stay in Orlando, the best area for most UK families depends on which theme parks you plan to visit most. Staying at Walt Disney World can be ideal for a Disney-focused holiday, while a Universal Orlando hotel can offer valuable theme park benefits. International Drive is often a good choice if you want more flexibility, plenty of restaurants and easier access to several different attractions.

Quick answer: If your holiday includes both Disney and Universal, a split stay can be one of the best options — spending part of your trip near Disney before moving to a Universal hotel for the Universal parks and Epic Universe.

Best Areas to Stay in Orlando for Families

1. Walt Disney World Resort – Best for Disney-Focused Holidays

If you’re deciding where to stay in Orlando and Disney World is the main focus of your holiday, staying in or close to the Disney Resort area can make a huge difference

Staying at Walt Disney World puts you right at the heart of the Disney experience. Disney resort hotels range from more affordable Value Resorts through to Deluxe Resorts, so there are options for different budgets.

The biggest advantage is convenience. Depending on your resort, you can use Disney transport such as buses, boats, the Disney Skyliner or Monorail to reach the parks, reducing the need to drive and pay for parking during the Disney part of your holiday.

Our Disney Hotel Picks

Best value – Disney’s Pop Century Resort
A good option for families who want the benefits of staying at Disney without paying Deluxe Resort prices. It also has access to the Disney Skyliner, making trips to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios particularly convenient.

Best mid-range – Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

Best premium – Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort
A fantastic choice if the budget stretches further, particularly for families spending plenty of time at Magic Kingdom. Its location and transport options are a major part of the appeal.

2. Universal Orlando Resort – Best for Universal & Epic Universe

Staying at a Universal Orlando hotel can be a great choice for families planning several days at Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe. Universal has hotels across different price levels, from more affordable options through to premium resorts.

One of the biggest reasons to consider an on-site hotel is the theme park benefits. Eligible Universal hotel guests can receive perks such as Early Park Admission, while selected Premier hotels include Universal Express Unlimited for Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure for registered hotel guests. Always check the current benefits for your hotel and travel dates before booking.

If Universal is the main focus of your trip, deciding where to stay in Orlando becomes much easier.

For UK families visiting both Disney and Universal, this is why a split stay can work so well: stay closer to Disney for the first part of the holiday, then move to a Universal hotel for the Universal part of the trip.

Our Universal Orlando Hotel Picks

Best value – Universal’s Endless Summer Resort
A good choice for families wanting an official Universal hotel at a more affordable price. The resort offers transport to the Universal theme parks and can be particularly useful for families who would rather spend their budget on park tickets and experiences.

Best for Epic Universe – Universal Helios Grand Hotel
Located right beside Epic Universe, Helios Grand is the standout option for families who want to make Epic Universe a major part of their holiday. Its location makes it particularly appealing for a short stay as part of a wider Orlando trip.

Best for Express Unlimited – Loews Royal Pacific Resort
Royal Pacific can be one of the smartest splurges in Orlando. Registered hotel guests receive Universal Express Unlimited at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure on eligible stays, which can make the higher room price much easier to justify for a family.

3. International Drive – Best for Flexibility & Off-Site Hotels

For families wondering where to stay in Orlando on a slightly tighter budget, International Drive is one of the most popular options.

International Drive — usually called I-Drive — is one of the most popular areas for UK families staying off-site in Orlando. It offers a huge choice of hotels, restaurants and attractions, with accommodation available across a wide range of budgets.

I-Drive can be particularly useful if your holiday isn’t centred entirely around Disney. Universal Orlando, Epic Universe and SeaWorld are all within relatively easy reach, while you’ll also have plenty of restaurants and entertainment nearby.

The trade-off is that you’ll usually need to think more carefully about transport. Some hotels offer theme park shuttles, but the schedules may not always suit your plans, so hiring a car or using Uber/Lyft can give you considerably more flexibility.

Our International Drive Hotel Picks

Best budget – Rosen Inn International
A popular choice for families looking to keep accommodation costs down while staying in a convenient location on International Drive. It’s a straightforward option if you plan to spend most of your days exploring the parks rather than at the hotel.

Best for families – Avanti International Resort
A family-friendly option in the heart of International Drive, with a large pool area and plenty of restaurants and attractions nearby. It can work well for families wanting an off-site base without being too far from Orlando’s major theme parks.

Best for a little more luxury – Hyatt Regency Orlando
A more upmarket option on International Drive with impressive pools and resort facilities. It’s a good choice if you want some proper hotel downtime between busy theme park days while remaining well positioned for Universal, Epic Universe and SeaWorld.

4. Lake Buena Vista – Best for Staying Close to Disney Without Staying at Disney

Lake Buena Vista is a great middle ground for families who want to stay close to Walt Disney World without necessarily paying the price of an official Disney resort. There’s a large choice of hotels, restaurants and shops in the area, with Disney Springs particularly convenient from many properties.

Hotels here can sometimes offer more space or better value than Disney-owned resorts, while still keeping you within easy reach of the Disney parks. Some properties also provide scheduled theme park transport, although it’s worth checking exactly how often the shuttle runs before relying on it.

Best for: Families who expect to spend plenty of time at Disney but want more choice and potentially better hotel value than staying on-site.

Our Lake Buena Vista Hotel Picks

Best value – Drury Plaza Hotel Orlando – Disney Springs Area
A strong option for families wanting to stay close to Disney while keeping an eye on the overall holiday budget. Added extras such as breakfast can make a noticeable difference to the cost of a two-week Orlando trip.

A family-focused option with suites and its own waterpark-style facilities, making it particularly appealing if you want some non-theme-park time built into the holiday.

Should You Split Your Stay Between Disney and Universal?

There isn’t one perfect answer to where to stay in Orlando, which is why a split stay can work so well for families visiting several different parks. For many UK families visiting Orlando for around two weeks, a split stay can be one of the smartest ways to organise the holiday. Rather than choosing one hotel for the entire trip, you could spend the first part of your holiday near Walt Disney World before moving to a Universal Orlando hotel for the Universal parks and Epic Universe.

This can reduce travelling between the major resort areas and allows you to take advantage of the benefits offered by each hotel. For example, you might choose a good-value hotel near Disney for the majority of your holiday, then finish with a shorter stay at a Universal hotel where eligible on-site benefits can make your park days easier.

Holiday Blueprint tip: Don’t automatically assume moving hotels will make the holiday more complicated. For a longer Orlando trip, one hotel change can actually make the second half of the holiday easier — particularly if you’re combining Disney, Universal and Epic Universe.

Do You Need a Hire Car in Orlando?

Whether you need a hire car depends heavily on where you stay and how many different parts of Orlando you plan to visit. If you’re staying entirely at Disney or Universal, resort transport combined with the occasional Uber or Lyft can make a car unnecessary.

For a two-week family holiday covering Disney, Universal, Epic Universe, SeaWorld and other Orlando attractions, however, having a car can offer much more freedom. It can also make supermarket trips, eating away from the theme parks and changing hotels during a split stay considerably easier.

Remember to compare the full cost rather than just the car hire price. Parking charges, fuel, tolls and any hotel parking fees can add up, while using Uber or Lyft regularly can become expensive too.

Holiday Blueprint tip: If you’re doing a split stay, you don’t necessarily need a car for the entire holiday. Some families may find it cheaper to hire one for only the part of the trip where it will be most useful.

How Much Should You Budget for an Orlando Hotel?

Orlando hotel prices vary enormously depending on where you stay, the time of year and the level of hotel you choose. A family staying off-site can often find significantly cheaper accommodation than at the major theme park resorts, while premium Disney and Universal hotels can cost considerably more.

For UK families, it’s better to compare the total cost of the stay rather than simply looking at the nightly room rate. A cheaper hotel can become less attractive once you add parking, resort fees, transport and breakfast, while a more expensive hotel may include benefits that save money elsewhere.

When comparing hotels, check: resort fees, parking charges, breakfast, theme park transport, room size, cancellation terms and any theme park benefits included with your stay.

Holiday Blueprint tip: Orlando hotel prices can change significantly between dates. Once you’ve narrowed your choice down to two or three hotels, compare the total price for your actual travel dates rather than relying on an advertised nightly rate.

Which Orlando Hotel Should You Choose?

There isn’t one Orlando hotel that’s best for every family. The right choice depends on your budget, which parks matter most and whether convenience or hotel facilities are your priority.

Best for a Disney-focused holiday: Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort
Best for Universal Express Unlimited: Loews Royal Pacific Resort
Best for Epic Universe: Universal Helios Grand Hotel
Best for keeping costs down: Rosen Inn International
Best off-site Disney option: Drury Plaza Hotel Orlando – Disney Springs Area
Best for an I-Drive resort experience: Hyatt Regency Orlando
Best strategy for visiting everything: A split stay between the Disney and Universal areas

Holiday Blueprint recommendation: For a typical two-week UK family holiday covering both Disney and Universal, we’d seriously consider a split stay. Spend the majority of the holiday in a good-value hotel convenient for Disney, then move to a Universal hotel for the final few nights. It can reduce travelling and, depending on the Universal hotel you choose, give you valuable theme park benefits at exactly the point you need them.

Frequently Asked Questions About Where to Stay in Orlando

Is it better to stay at Disney or Universal Orlando?

It depends on which parks you’ll visit most. Staying at Disney is usually more convenient for a Disney-heavy holiday, while staying at Universal can offer useful benefits for Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe. If you’re visiting both resort areas over two weeks, a split stay can give you the best of both.

Is it cheaper to stay off-site in Orlando?

Often, yes. Off-site hotels around International Drive and Lake Buena Vista can offer lower room rates and more choice than staying at Disney or Universal. However, always compare the total cost. Resort fees, parking, car hire and transport to the theme parks can reduce the saving, while some on-site hotels include benefits that may be valuable to your family.

What is the best area to stay in Orlando without a car?

Staying at an official Disney or Universal hotel can be one of the easiest options without a car because you’ll have access to resort transport for their respective theme parks. International Drive can also work, particularly if your hotel offers useful shuttle services, although you may still want to use Uber or Lyft for some journeys.

How many nights should you stay at Universal Orlando?

For many families on a two-week Orlando holiday, around three or four nights at a Universal hotel can work well as part of a split stay. This gives you several days for Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe without needing to base your entire holiday at Universal. The ideal length will depend on your park tickets and how much downtime you want.

Is a split stay in Orlando worth it?

For many UK families visiting Orlando for around two weeks, yes. A split stay can reduce the amount of travelling between Disney and Universal and lets you choose hotels that suit each part of the holiday. The downside is having to pack and change hotels once, but for longer trips the extra convenience can make it worthwhile.

Final Thoughts: Where Should You Stay in Orlando?

Choosing where to stay in Orlando comes down to balancing location, budget and convenience. If Disney is the main focus of your holiday, staying on or close to Walt Disney World can make life much easier. If Universal and Epic Universe are high on your list, spending at least a few nights at a Universal hotel can be well worth considering.

For many UK families visiting for around two weeks, our favourite approach is a split stay. It gives you the freedom to choose a good-value base for the Disney part of your holiday before moving closer to Universal for the final few nights.

Whichever option you choose, compare the total cost rather than the room rate alone. Transport, parking, resort fees, breakfast and included theme park benefits can completely change which hotel offers the best value.

Disney vs Universal Orlando theme parks for UK families
Holiday Blueprint Verdict: Our independent comparison of Disney and Universal Orlando, helping UK families choose the best theme park holiday.

Best for Families

When planning a family holiday to Orlando, one of the biggest questions is whether Disney or Universal offers the better overall experience. The answer depends largely on the ages of your children and the type of holiday you’re hoping to enjoy.

For families with toddlers and younger children, Disney is the clear winner. Classic attractions, character meet-and-greets, gentle rides and magical experiences are designed with younger visitors in mind. Every Disney park offers something for all ages, making it easy for the whole family to enjoy the day together.

Universal has become much more family-friendly in recent years, but its biggest strengths lie with older children, teenagers and adults. Thrill rides, immersive lands such as The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and blockbuster attractions appeal to families looking for more action-packed experiences.

If your family includes children of different ages, visiting both resorts provides the best of both worlds. Disney delivers unforgettable family moments, while Universal adds excitement and bigger thrills that older children often love.

🏆 Holiday Blueprint Verdict:
Winner: Disney for families with younger children.
Winner: Universal for families with teenagers and thrill-seekers.
Overall recommendation: Visit both if your itinerary allows.

Disney vs Universal: Best Rides & Attractions

One of the biggest differences between Disney and Universal is the type of attractions you’ll experience. While both resorts offer world-class rides, they appeal to different audiences and create very different experiences.

Disney focuses on storytelling, immersive environments and attractions the whole family can enjoy together. Classics like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion and Rise of the Resistance combine incredible theming with unforgettable moments. Even the thrill rides, such as Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and TRON Lightcycle / Run, are designed to tell a story rather than simply deliver high speeds.

Universal takes a different approach. Its attractions are generally faster, more intense and packed with action. From Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Jurassic World VelociCoaster to Revenge of the Mummy and Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, Universal is the resort most thrill-seekers dream about.

If you’re travelling with younger children, Disney offers the wider range of family-friendly attractions. If you’re travelling with teenagers or adults who love roller coasters and cutting-edge ride technology, Universal has the edge.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Opinion

If you’re chasing unforgettable family experiences, Disney wins. If you’re chasing adrenaline, Universal is hard to beat. The best Orlando holidays include both, giving you the perfect balance of magic and thrills.

Best Theming & Immersion

One of the biggest reasons people fall in love with Orlando is the incredible level of detail found throughout its theme parks. Disney and Universal both create immersive worlds, but they achieve it in very different ways.

Disney is built around storytelling. Every land, attraction and even the background music is carefully designed to make guests feel like they’ve stepped into another world. Whether you’re walking down Main Street, U.S.A., exploring Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge or wandering through Pandora – The World of Avatar, every detail has been considered to create a truly magical experience.

Universal focuses on placing guests inside their favourite films, television shows and games. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter remains one of the most immersive themed lands ever created, while Epic Universe has taken immersion to another level with spectacular environments inspired by Super Nintendo World™, How to Train Your Dragon, Dark Universe and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic™.

If you’re looking for emotional storytelling and classic Disney magic, Disney still sets the benchmark. If you prefer feeling like you’ve stepped directly into blockbuster adventures with cutting-edge technology and incredible attention to detail, Universal is now every bit as impressive.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Opinion

Disney creates magical worlds you’ll remember forever. Universal creates adventures you’ll want to experience again and again. Neither approach is better—they’re simply different, and that’s exactly why visiting both resorts is so rewarding.

Best Hotels

Choosing where to stay is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning an Orlando holiday. Both Disney and Universal offer excellent on-site hotels, but they cater to different budgets and styles of travel.

Disney has more than 25 resort hotels, ranging from great-value options such as Pop Century Resort to deluxe resorts including Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Staying on-site gives you easy access to the parks, complimentary transport across the resort and the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the Disney experience.

Universal’s hotel collection is smaller but offers exceptional value. Premier Hotels such as Loews Royal Pacific Resort, Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Portofino Bay Hotel include Unlimited Express Pass for every guest, which can save hundreds of pounds for a family. Many Universal hotels are also within walking distance or a short boat ride from the parks, making them incredibly convenient.

If you’re looking for luxury and theming, Disney has the wider choice. If you’re looking for convenience and excellent value, especially when Express Pass is included, Universal is difficult to beat.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Opinion

Disney offers the most magical hotel stays, while Universal offers some of the best value in Orlando. If your budget allows, consider splitting your holiday between both resorts to experience the best of each.

Best Food & Dining

Food has become a major part of the Orlando experience, and both Disney and Universal offer far more than traditional theme park meals. From quick-service favourites to award-winning restaurants, you’ll find something to suit every taste and budget.

Disney offers the widest variety of dining experiences, with more than 200 restaurants across its parks, hotels and Disney Springs. Whether you’re enjoying a character breakfast, dining inside Cinderella Castle or sampling international cuisine around EPCOT’s World Showcase, Disney excels at creating memorable meals that are part of the overall experience.

Universal has raised its game significantly in recent years. Restaurants such as The Leaky Cauldron, Mythos, Toothsome Chocolate Emporium and the themed dining locations throughout Epic Universe provide excellent food in immersive settings. Universal’s dining is often easier to book and can represent better value, particularly for families who prefer quicker, more casual meals.

If food is an important part of your holiday, Disney offers greater variety and more unique dining experiences. Universal, however, delivers excellent quality with shorter waits and outstanding themed restaurants.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Opinion

Disney wins for unforgettable dining experiences and variety. Universal wins for convenience, value and some of the best themed restaurants anywhere in Orlando.

Best Value for Money

Planning an Orlando holiday is a significant investment, so getting the best value from your budget is important. While both Disney and Universal offer incredible experiences, they provide value in different ways.

Disney delivers outstanding entertainment, beautifully themed parks and a huge variety of attractions. However, extras such as Lightning Lane passes, character dining and premium resort hotels can quickly increase the overall cost of your holiday. If you’re staying for two weeks and want to experience everything Disney has to offer, it’s worth planning your budget carefully.

Universal often represents better value for families, particularly when staying at one of the Premier Hotels. These hotels include Unlimited Express Pass for every guest, allowing you to skip the regular queues at most attractions. For many families, this benefit alone can save hundreds of pounds compared with purchasing similar queue-skipping access elsewhere.

If you’re travelling on a tighter budget, Universal can provide excellent value without compromising on quality. If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime holiday packed with unforgettable experiences, Disney offers exceptional value despite the higher cost.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Opinion

For overall value, Universal has the edge thanks to its hotel benefits and included Express Pass. For unforgettable experiences and magical moments, Disney justifies its higher price for many families.

Every family is different, which means there isn’t a single “best” choice for everyone. Your ideal resort depends on who you’re travelling with and what kind of holiday you want to have.

👶 Families with Young Children

Disney is the clear winner for younger children. Character meet-and-greets, gentle attractions and magical experiences make every day feel special. Magic Kingdom alone offers enough attractions to keep young families entertained for several days.

🎢 Teenagers & Thrill-Seekers

Universal takes the crown for older children and teenagers. Roller coasters such as VelociCoaster and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, combined with Epic Universe’s attractions, create an action-packed holiday.

“How Much Does an Orlando Holiday Cost?”

When planning an Orlando holiday from the UK, your overall budget will depend heavily on when you travel, where you stay and how many theme parks you plan to visit.

At the heart of Epic Universe, Celestial Park connects the themed lands with stunning gardens, fountains, restaurants, shops and exciting attractions. It’s designed to be both a destination and a place to relax between adventures.

Is Epic Universe worth visiting?

Absolutely. If you’re planning your first Orlando holiday, Epic Universe should be high on your list. It adds an entirely new dimension to Universal Orlando Resort and is expected to become one of the most popular theme parks in the world.

🌟 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Try to spend a full day at Epic Universe. Arrive before the park opens, use the official Universal Orlando app to monitor wait times and prioritise the most popular attractions early in the day.

Suggested 14-Day Orlando Itinerary

A two-week holiday gives you enough time to experience Orlando’s major theme parks without trying to fit everything into consecutive, exhausting park days.

This itinerary includes Disney, Universal, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, a water park and several easier days for shopping, relaxing and recovering.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Avoid booking several major park days back-to-back. Orlando holidays involve a lot of walking, heat and early starts, so rest days can make the entire trip more enjoyable.

15 Ways to Save Money on Your Orlando Holiday

Orlando doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With a bit of planning, you can save hundreds—or even thousands—of pounds without missing out on the experience.

1. Book flights early

Flight prices usually become available around 11 months before departure. Booking early often gives you the best choice of dates and seats.

2. Compare package holidays with booking separately

Sometimes a package holiday is cheaper. Other times, booking flights and accommodation separately offers better value. Always compare both.

3. Stay slightly further from the parks

Hotels just 10–20 minutes away can be significantly cheaper than staying on-site.

4. Use supermarket breakfasts

Buying cereal, fruit and drinks from stores such as Walmart or Target can save a surprising amount over two weeks.

5. Take refillable water bottles

Florida’s heat makes staying hydrated essential. Refillable bottles can save money every day.

6. Plan rest days

A day by the pool or at Disney Springs costs much less than buying another expensive park ticket.

7. Buy park tickets from reputable UK retailers

Sometimes authorised UK ticket sellers offer better value than buying at the gate.

8. Set a daily spending budget

It’s easy to overspend on souvenirs and snacks. A daily budget helps keep costs under control.

9. Use free entertainment

Disney Springs and Universal CityWalk are great places to explore without needing a park ticket.

10. Travel outside peak school holidays

If your schedule allows, you’ll often find lower prices and shorter queues.

💷 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Saving £20–£30 a day on food, drinks and extras can easily add up to more than £400 over a two-week holiday.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 14 days enough for Orlando?

Yes. Two weeks is the ideal length for most visitors. It gives you enough time to experience Disney, Universal, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, a water park and still enjoy some relaxing days without feeling rushed.

Do I need to hire a car?

If you’re staying off-site or planning to visit multiple attractions, a hire car offers the greatest flexibility. However, many visitors rely on Uber, Lyft and hotel shuttle buses instead. Thinking about driving? Our Orlando Car Hire Guide for UK Visitors covers insurance, rental companies, driving tips and what to check before you book.

It’s also worth understanding Florida’s toll roads before you collect your car. Our Florida Tolls Guide for UK Drivers explains SunPass, rental-car toll programmes and how to avoid unexpected charges.

When is hurricane season?

Hurricane season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November, with the highest activity typically occurring between August and October. While most holidays are unaffected, it’s sensible to take out comprehensive travel insurance and keep an eye on weather forecasts if travelling during these months.

How much spending money should I take?

This varies depending on your plans, but many visitors budget £50–£100 per person, per day for food, drinks, souvenirs and other expenses, in addition to pre-booked park tickets and accommodation.

Is Orlando suitable for adults without children?

Absolutely. Orlando offers some of the world’s best roller coasters, award-winning restaurants, shopping, golf courses, water parks and nightlife, making it a fantastic destination for couples and groups of friends as well as families.

Do I need a visa to visit Florida from the UK?

Most UK passport holders can travel under the ESTA scheme for eligible short visits, provided they meet the requirements. Check the latest official entry requirements before you travel, as rules can change.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Before booking, make sure your passport, ESTA (if required), travel insurance and park tickets are all arranged well in advance to avoid unnecessary stress.
