Salou is our best all-round choice for most families, particularly if PortAventura World, beaches and having plenty of restaurants and activities within easy reach are priorities.

Cambrils has a more relaxed feel and is a great choice for families who prefer a quieter base, attractive seafront and excellent restaurants, while La Pineda works particularly well for families wanting a smaller resort with a long beach and easy access to Aquopolis Costa Dorada.

Salou vs Cambrils vs La Pineda – which is best for families

Salou – Best Overall for Families

Of the three resorts, Salou is our best all-round choice for most families, particularly if you’re visiting the Costa Dorada for the first time.

Its biggest advantage is variety. You can spend one day riding roller coasters at PortAventura World, another relaxing on Llevant Beach, visit a water park, take a boat trip and still have plenty of restaurants, shops and evening entertainment within easy reach.

Salou is also the strongest choice for families with older children and teenagers. PortAventura and Ferrari Land are obvious attractions, but having a livelier resort in the evenings can be just as important when you’re travelling with children who’ve outgrown playgrounds and early bedtimes.

Why families should choose Salou

Choose Salou if you want:

• The easiest access to PortAventura World
• Plenty of restaurants and family entertainment
• Excellent beaches without sacrificing resort facilities
• Lots to do without hiring a car
• A good mixture of activities for younger children and teenagers
• A livelier atmosphere in the evenings

The trade-off is that Salou can feel busier and more touristy, particularly during the peak summer months. Families wanting quiet evenings and a more traditional Spanish atmosphere may prefer Cambrils.

⭐ Salou Verdict: Best overall for first-time visitors, theme-park families and teenagers.

Cambrils – Best for a Relaxed Family Holiday

If Salou sounds a little too busy for your family, Cambrils offers a noticeably more relaxed alternative while keeping you within easy reach of the Costa Dorada’s major attractions.

Cambrils has a more traditional feel than Salou, with an attractive harbour, long seafront promenade and a particularly strong reputation for food. Evenings tend to feel more about strolling along the waterfront and choosing somewhere for dinner than searching for entertainment.

That makes Cambrils particularly appealing to families who want beaches and relaxation to be the main focus of the holiday, with PortAventura and other attractions added as day trips rather than dominating the entire break.

Why families should choose Cambrils

Choose Cambrils if you want:

• A quieter and more relaxed atmosphere
• An attractive harbour and seafront
• Excellent restaurants and places to eat
• Family-friendly beaches
• Easy access to Salou without staying in the busiest resort
• A more traditional feel in the evenings

The main compromise is convenience for attractions. You can still visit PortAventura World easily enough, but families planning several theme-park days may find staying in Salou more convenient.

Cambrils may also feel a little too quiet for some teenagers who want plenty happening around them after the beach or parks.

Is Cambrils better than Salou for families?

It depends on the holiday you want. We’d choose Salou for attractions, teenagers and first-time visits, but Cambrils for a more relaxed family beach holiday.

One option we particularly like is staying in Cambrils and visiting Salou when you want the busier atmosphere. That gives you access to both without necessarily having to sleep in the livelier resort every night.

⭐ Cambrils Verdict: Best for families who prioritise beaches, restaurants and relaxed evenings over having attractions on the doorstep.

La Pineda – Best for Younger Families

La Pineda is the smallest and most laid-back of the three resorts, making it particularly appealing to families with younger children who don’t need the constant entertainment and bustle of Salou.

The resort centres around a long, wide sandy beach, with hotels, restaurants and family facilities close by. Its more compact feel can make day-to-day life easier with younger children — particularly when much of your holiday revolves around the beach, pool and hotel.

La Pineda also has one major family attraction right on its doorstep: Aquopolis Costa Dorada, making it an especially convenient choice for families planning a water park day.

Why families should choose La Pineda

Choose La Pineda if you want:

• A smaller, easier-going family resort
• A long sandy beach
• Aquopolis Costa Dorada nearby
• A quieter atmosphere than central Salou
• A simple beach-and-pool style holiday
• Somewhere particularly suited to younger children

The biggest compromise is choice. Salou has considerably more going on in terms of restaurants, shops, attractions and evening entertainment, while Cambrils offers more character around its harbour and dining scene.

Families with teenagers may therefore find La Pineda a little too quiet, particularly if they like being able to wander out in the evening and have plenty happening around them.

Is La Pineda close enough to PortAventura?

Yes. You don’t need to stay in Salou to visit PortAventura World, and La Pineda can still work well for families planning park days.

However, if PortAventura is the main reason for your holiday and you’re expecting to visit repeatedly, we’d still favour Salou or one of the PortAventura resort hotels for maximum convenience.

⭐ La Pineda Verdict: Best for younger families wanting a straightforward beach holiday with a quieter resort atmosphere.

Which Has the Best Beaches: Salou, Cambrils or La Pineda?

All three resorts have excellent beaches, so there isn’t really a bad choice here. The difference is more about the type of beach holiday your family wants.

Salou offers the greatest variety. You have large, well-equipped beaches such as Llevant and Ponent, quieter options such as Llarga and smaller coves around Cap Salou. That makes it particularly good for families who like trying different beaches during the same holiday.

Cambrils is excellent for families who want long beach days combined with a more relaxed seafront atmosphere. Its coastline stretches across several beaches, so it works particularly well if the beach is going to be a major part of your holiday rather than simply somewhere you visit between attractions.

La Pineda is arguably the simplest option. Its long sandy beach dominates the resort and is extremely convenient if you want to walk between your hotel, the beach and nearby restaurants without much planning.

Our beach winner

🏆 Winner: Salou – but only just.

We’d give Salou the edge because of the variety rather than because its sand or sea is necessarily better. Families can choose between big resort beaches and smaller coves without leaving Salou.

For a straightforward beach-focused holiday with younger children, however, La Pineda could actually be the better choice, while Cambrils is excellent for families wanting beaches combined with a more relaxed resort atmosphere.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: If beaches are a major priority and you’re leaning towards Salou, read our Best Beaches in Salou for Families guide before choosing your hotel. Staying within easy walking distance of the beach you’ll use most can make a surprisingly big difference with children.

Which Is Best for PortAventura World?

If PortAventura World is going to be a major part of your holiday, Salou is the clear winner.

PortAventura Park, Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park sit just outside Salou, making the resort the most convenient of the three for families planning several park days. Depending on where you’re staying, you may be able to reach the resort quickly by hotel transport, taxi, local transport or even on foot from some areas.

La Pineda and Cambrils are still perfectly viable bases, particularly if you’re only planning one or two PortAventura days. The distances involved aren’t huge, so choosing a quieter resort doesn’t mean giving up the theme parks.

The difference becomes more noticeable if you’re planning multiple park days. After a long day of rides and walking, the convenience of getting back to a Salou or PortAventura hotel becomes much more valuable.

Our PortAventura winner

🏆 Winner: Salou

For families building a large part of their holiday around PortAventura World, we’d choose Salou without much hesitation.

If PortAventura is only going to be one day of a predominantly beach holiday, we’d choose whichever of the three resorts suits your family best rather than staying in Salou purely for the park.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: If PortAventura is one of the main reasons you’re visiting the Costa Dorada, read our PortAventura World for UK Families: Complete 2027 Guide before choosing where to stay. It covers the parks, rides, tickets, hotels and planning your visit.

Which Is Best for Younger Children?

For families travelling with toddlers or younger children, we’d give La Pineda a narrow win, although Cambrils comes very close.

La Pineda’s biggest advantage is simplicity. It’s a smaller resort centred around a long sandy beach, so families can spend much of the holiday moving between the hotel, pool, beach and nearby restaurants without constantly planning transport or activities.

Aquopolis Costa Dorada also gives families an easy water park option nearby, while Salou and PortAventura World remain close enough for day trips.

Cambrils is another excellent choice with younger children, particularly for families who prefer a relaxed seafront, beaches and leisurely evenings.

Salou certainly isn’t unsuitable for young children — far from it — but its biggest advantages become more valuable as children get older and want more rides, attractions and entertainment.

Our younger families winner

🏆 Winner: La Pineda

We’d choose La Pineda for families wanting the easiest beach-and-pool holiday with younger children.

Choose Cambrils if you’d prefer more restaurants and a little more character, or Salou if you want considerably more activities on your doorstep.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: With toddlers and young children, hotel location can matter more than which resort technically “wins”. Being able to walk easily between your hotel, beach and restaurants can make everyday family life much easier.

Is Salou Good for Teenagers? Things to Do for Older Kids

For families looking for things to do in Salou with teenagers, Salou is the clear winner of the three resorts.

The biggest reason is PortAventura World. Between PortAventura Park, Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park, thrill-seeking teenagers have some of the biggest rides and attractions in the region within easy reach.

But Salou’s advantage doesn’t stop with the theme parks. Teenagers are also more likely to appreciate having water parks, beaches, snorkelling, boat trips, shops and a livelier seafront available during the rest of the holiday.

Cambrils can still work well if your teenagers prefer beach days, restaurants and a more relaxed atmosphere, but there’s less happening in the evenings.

La Pineda would be our third choice for most teenagers. It’s a lovely family resort, but older children looking for lots of variety may find its quieter atmosphere limiting over a longer stay.

Our teenagers winner

🏆 Winner: Salou

For teenagers who enjoy roller coasters, water parks and having plenty to do, Salou wins comfortably.

We’d particularly choose Salou if this is your family’s first Costa Dorada holiday, as teenagers can still experience Cambrils and La Pineda on day trips without sacrificing the livelier base.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: If your teenagers love thrill rides, check the attraction height restrictions before travelling. It can also be worth involving them when planning your PortAventura days — particularly when deciding which rides are absolute must-dos.

Which Is Best for Restaurants & Evenings?

All three resorts have places to eat and enjoy an evening out, but they offer quite different experiences.

Cambrils is our favourite for families who place food high on their holiday wish list. The harbour and seafront are particularly attractive in the evening, and the town has a strong reputation for seafood and Mediterranean cuisine alongside plenty of family-friendly choices.

Salou wins for sheer variety. You’ll find everything from quick family meals and international favourites to Spanish restaurants, ice-cream shops and busy terraces. There’s also considerably more happening after dinner, which can make Salou the better choice with older children and teenagers.

La Pineda has enough restaurants for a family holiday, but it can’t match the choice available in Salou or the dining reputation and atmosphere of Cambrils.

Our restaurants & evenings winner

🏆 Winner: Cambrils for food and relaxed evenings

We’d choose Cambrils if your ideal evening involves walking along the seafront, finding a good restaurant and taking things slowly.

For families who want more choice and a livelier atmosphere after dinner, we’d give the advantage to Salou instead.

Holiday Blueprint Tip: You don’t have to choose. If you’re staying in Salou, consider spending one evening in Cambrils for dinner and a walk around the harbour. The Salou–Cambrils ferry can also make visiting Cambrils part of the day’s experience when sailings suit your plans.

Which Offers the Best Value for Families?

There isn’t one resort that’s always the cheapest. Hotel and package-holiday prices can vary considerably depending on your travel dates, board basis and how close you want to stay to the beach or major attractions.

Salou has the biggest choice of accommodation, which can work in your favour. There are everything from budget apartments and family hotels to higher-end resorts, so families have plenty of options at different price points.

Cambrils can offer excellent value if you’re happy to stay slightly further from PortAventura and prioritise beaches and a more relaxed holiday. However, don’t assume Cambrils will automatically be cheaper — some of its more desirable beachfront accommodation can command higher prices.

La Pineda can also represent good value for families, particularly when you find a package that includes a family-friendly hotel close to the beach. Its compact layout may also mean you spend less on local transport during relaxed beach days.

Don’t compare hotel price alone

When comparing the three resorts, look at the total cost of your holiday, not simply which hotel is £100 cheaper.

A cheaper hotel further away may mean additional taxis or transfers. Likewise, paying slightly more to stay somewhere within walking distance of the beach, restaurants or attractions could actually make better financial sense.

Our value winner

🏆 Winner: Too close to call

We’d compare all three for your actual travel dates rather than choosing a resort based on a reputation for being cheaper.

For us, value means getting the right location and facilities for your family at the right price, not simply finding the lowest room rate.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: When comparing hotels, check exactly what’s included — particularly breakfast, half board or all-inclusive options, parking, children’s facilities and cancellation terms. Two similarly priced hotels can offer very different overall value.

Where Should Families Stay?

By this point, you probably have a good idea which of the three resorts suits your family best. The final decision is finding accommodation in the right part of that resort.

Stay in Salou if you want the widest choice of family hotels, easy access to PortAventura World and plenty of restaurants and activities nearby.

Stay in Cambrils if you want a quieter base with an attractive seafront, excellent places to eat and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Stay in La Pineda if you’re travelling with younger children and want a straightforward beach-and-pool holiday in a smaller resort.

Compare hotels before choosing your resort

Hotel prices can vary significantly between Salou, Cambrils and La Pineda. Compare accommodation across all three before deciding which resort offers the best combination of location, facilities and price for your family.

Which Resort Should Your Family Choose?

If you’re still undecided between Salou, Cambrils and La Pineda, we’d base the decision on the type of family holiday you actually want, rather than trying to find one resort that’s best at everything.

Choose Salou if…

🎢 PortAventura World is a major reason for your holiday.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 You’re visiting the Costa Dorada for the first time.
🎡 Your children want plenty of activities and entertainment.
🧑 You’re travelling with older children or teenagers.
🍦 You like having lots of restaurants, shops and evening options nearby.

Our pick: Salou is the safest all-round choice for most families.

Choose Cambrils if…

🌴 You prefer a quieter, more relaxed holiday.
🍽️ Restaurants and good food are important to you.
⚓ You like an attractive harbour and seafront atmosphere.
🏖️ Beach days are more important than being beside the theme parks.
🌙 You prefer relaxed evenings to a lively resort.

Our pick: Cambrils is ideal for families who want the Costa Dorada without quite as much bustle.

Choose La Pineda if…

👶 You’re travelling with younger children.
🏖️ You want a simple beach-and-pool holiday.
💦 Aquopolis Costa Dorada appeals to your family.
🚶 You prefer a smaller, more compact resort.
😌 You don’t need lots of nightlife or evening entertainment.

Our pick: La Pineda is particularly good for younger families who value convenience and a relaxed pace.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Overall Winner: Salou

If we had to recommend just one resort to a UK family visiting the Costa Dorada for the first time, we’d choose Salou. It offers the strongest combination of beaches, PortAventura access, family activities, restaurants and entertainment.

But that doesn’t mean everyone should stay there. Cambrils can be the better holiday for families who value relaxation and food, while La Pineda can be easier with younger children. The best choice ultimately depends on what you want your days — and evenings — to look like.

Things to Do in Salou with Kids (2027): 10 Best Family Activities

Things to do in Salou with kids – 10 best family activities

Planning a family holiday to Salou and wondering how you’ll keep the children entertained?

You’re unlikely to run out of options. Salou combines some of Spain’s biggest theme parks with family-friendly beaches, water parks, boat trips, coastal walks and plenty of activities that don’t involve spending an entire day at an attraction.

PortAventura World is understandably the headline attraction, but there’s much more to a family holiday here than roller coasters. Whether you’re travelling with toddlers, primary-school children or teenagers, you’ll find things to do both in Salou itself and across the surrounding Costa Dorada.

In this guide, we’ve picked 10 of the best things to do in Salou with kids, with plenty of things to do in Salou for families of all ages, including big-ticket attractions, free activities, beach days and ideas for when you want something a little more relaxed.

Things to do in Salou with kids – Holiday Blueprint quick picks

1. PortAventura Park – Best Overall Family Attraction

If you’re visiting Salou with kids, PortAventura Park is the attraction we’d put at the top of the list.

Located just outside central Salou, the park is divided into themed areas including Mediterrània, Polynesia, China, México, Far West and SésamoAventura, with attractions ranging from gentle family rides to some of Europe’s biggest roller coasters.

For thrill-seeking families, rides such as Shambhala and Dragon Khan are major highlights, while younger children have plenty to enjoy in SésamoAventura and across the park’s family attractions.

We’d allow at least one full day for PortAventura Park. Families who want to experience the resort properly should consider multiple days, particularly if you’re also planning to visit Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park.

Is PortAventura good for younger children?

Yes. Although PortAventura is famous for its roller coasters, it isn’t only aimed at teenagers and adults. There are plenty of gentler attractions and character experiences for younger visitors, particularly around SésamoAventura.

Height restrictions apply to individual rides, so it’s worth checking them before your visit if there’s a particular attraction your children are desperate to ride.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t try to plan your entire PortAventura visit from this article. We’ve created a separate PortAventura World for UK Families: Complete 2027 Guide covering rides, tickets, hotels and planning tips.

🎟️ Planning a Visit to PortAventura?

Compare PortAventura and Ferrari Land ticket options, including 1, 2 and 3-day tickets, before your trip. Booking in advance can also make it easier to plan your park days before arriving in Salou.

2. Ferrari Land – Best for Thrill Seekers

If your children love fast rides and roller coasters, Ferrari Land deserves a place on your Salou itinerary.

Located alongside PortAventura Park, Ferrari Land is themed around the famous Italian car brand and combines thrill rides with family attractions and Ferrari-inspired experiences.

The headline attraction is Red Force, a huge launched roller coaster that accelerates from 0 to 180 km/h in just five seconds and reaches a height of 112 metres. It’s one of the most spectacular rides at PortAventura World and an obvious target for thrill-seeking teenagers.

Ferrari Land isn’t only about Red Force, though. There are attractions suitable for families and younger visitors too, making it worth exploring even if not everyone wants the biggest rides.

Is Ferrari Land worth visiting with kids?

For families with older children and teenagers, we’d say yes — particularly if they’re interested in roller coasters or cars.

Families with very young children may find PortAventura Park offers more for a full day, which is why we’d generally treat Ferrari Land as an addition to PortAventura rather than the main reason for visiting.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Check height restrictions before promising children they’ll be able to ride Red Force or the other thrill attractions. It’s much better to know before you arrive than discover at the entrance to the ride.

3. Caribe Aquatic Park – Best for a PortAventura Water Park Day

When Salou’s summer temperatures climb, Caribe Aquatic Park is an easy way to swap roller coasters for pools, slides and a day in the water.

Part of PortAventura World, the Caribbean-themed water park has attractions for different ages, from gentler children’s areas and pools to much faster slides for older children and teenagers.

One of the biggest thrill attractions is King Khajuna, a 31-metre free-fall slide with a steep 55-degree descent. At the other end of the scale, younger children have dedicated areas where they can enjoy the water without needing to tackle the park’s major slides.

This makes Caribe Aquatic Park particularly useful for families spending several days around PortAventura World who want a completely different type of park day.

Caribe Aquatic Park or Aquopolis Costa Dorada?

This is a question many families will face. Caribe Aquatic Park makes the most sense if PortAventura World is already a major part of your holiday, while Aquopolis Costa Dorada in nearby La Pineda is another strong option if you want a standalone water park day.

We’ve compared the options in our Best Water Parks in Salou guide, including which park we’d choose for different ages.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t automatically schedule your water park immediately after a long PortAventura day. A slower beach or pool day between the parks can make the holiday much less exhausting, particularly with younger children.

🎟️ Check Caribe Aquatic Park ticket options →

4. Spend a Day on Salou’s Beaches – Best Free Family Activity

Not every family day in Salou needs an entrance ticket. Some of the easiest and cheapest days can be spent on the resort’s golden sandy beaches.

Llevant Beach is our best overall choice for most families thanks to its central location, long stretch of sand and excellent facilities. Ponent Beach is another great option, particularly for families with younger children, while Llarga Beach offers a more relaxed setting away from the busiest part of the resort.

A beach day also works brilliantly between more intensive days at PortAventura World. After hours of rides and walking around the parks, having absolutely nothing planned beyond swimming, building sandcastles and finding somewhere for lunch can be very welcome.

Which Salou beach should families choose?

We’ve created a separate Best Beaches in Salou for Families (2027) guide comparing Llevant, Ponent, Capellans, Llarga and the smaller Cap Salou coves, including the best choices for younger children, snorkelling and quieter beach days.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: If you’re visiting in July or August, consider heading to the beach earlier in the morning and taking a break during the hottest part of the afternoon. You can always return later when temperatures become more comfortable.

5. Explore the Cap Salou Coves & Go Snorkelling

For families with older children who enjoy exploring the water, the smaller coves around Cap Salou offer a completely different experience from the resort’s main beaches.

Cala Font and Cala Crancs are two of our favourite options. Their rocky surroundings and clear Mediterranean water make them particularly appealing for snorkelling, while the smaller setting feels very different from busy Llevant Beach.

You don’t need to be an experienced snorkeller to enjoy them, but we’d recommend this activity more for confident swimmers and older children than very young children.

What should you take?

Bring your own masks and snorkels if you have them, along with plenty of water, high-factor sunscreen and ideally water shoes for rocky sections.

Facilities around the smaller coves can be more limited than at Salou’s main beaches, so it’s worth arriving prepared rather than expecting everything to be available beside the water.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Make this a half-day adventure rather than necessarily planning an entire day around one small cove. Combine some snorkelling with exploring Cap Salou or another nearby beach.

6. Walk the Camí de Ronda – Best Scenic Family Activity

If you want to see more of Salou than the beach and theme parks, spend some time exploring the Camí de Ronda coastal path.

The route follows Salou’s coastline, taking you past beaches, rocky coves and viewpoints that many visitors never see if they stay around the main promenade.

It’s also a great free family activity and can easily be combined with stops at places such as Capellans Beach, Llenguadets Cove and Llarga Beach.

Is the Camí de Ronda suitable for children?

Older children who are comfortable walking should enjoy exploring sections of the route, particularly if you break the walk up with beach or swimming stops.

With younger children, we’d be more selective. Parts of the coastal route include steps, slopes and uneven sections, so it isn’t the same as pushing a buggy along Salou’s flat seafront promenade.

There’s no need to complete the whole route. Choosing one manageable section can be much more enjoyable with children than turning it into an endurance challenge.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Take water and wear proper footwear rather than flip-flops if you’re planning a longer walk. During the hotter months, we’d also choose the morning or later afternoon rather than walking in the strongest midday sun.

7. Take a Family Boat Trip Along the Costa Dorada

Seeing the Costa Dorada from the water is a great change of pace after several days of beaches and theme parks.

Families can choose between short coastal trips and longer catamaran cruises, depending on how much of the day you want to spend at sea.

One of the easiest options is the Salou to Cambrils ferry, which takes around 30 minutes each way. You can travel to Cambrils, spend some time exploring the town and harbour, then return to Salou on a later sailing.

If your children would enjoy something more adventurous, longer catamaran excursions are also available around the Costa Dorada, with some including stops for swimming and snorkelling.

Which boat trip is best for families?

With younger children, we’d lean towards the shorter Salou–Cambrils trip. It’s long enough to enjoy being out on the Mediterranean without committing everyone to several hours on a boat.

With older children and teenagers, a longer catamaran cruise with a swimming stop could be much more memorable.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: If anyone in the family is prone to seasickness, start with the shorter coastal trip rather than booking a three-hour excursion. Also take sunscreen and hats — the Mediterranean sun can feel particularly strong when you’re out on the water.

⛴️ Take the Ferry from Salou to Cambrils

Turn your boat trip into a family day out with a return ferry between Salou and Cambrils. Enjoy the Costa Dorada views from the water, explore Cambrils at your own pace and return to Salou on a later sailing.

8. Spend a Day at Aquopolis Costa Dorada

If your family loves water parks, Aquopolis Costa Dorada gives you another option beyond Caribe Aquatic Park.

Located in La Pineda, just outside Salou, Aquopolis combines high-speed slides with family attractions, pools and areas aimed at younger children. It’s particularly useful for families who want a dedicated water park day without returning to PortAventura World.

Older children and teenagers can head for the faster slides, while families with younger children can spend more time around the gentler pools and children’s areas.

Aquopolis or Caribe Aquatic Park?

We’d choose Caribe Aquatic Park if you’re already spending several days at PortAventura World and want everything concentrated around the same resort.

Aquopolis Costa Dorada makes more sense if you want a separate water park experience or you’re staying closer to La Pineda.

For a much more detailed comparison, read our Best Water Parks in Salou guide.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Whichever water park you choose, check opening dates and times for your travel dates before building it into your itinerary. Water parks around Salou operate seasonally and schedules can change.

9. Explore Salou’s Seafront & Fountains in the Evening

After a day at the beach or theme parks, one of the nicest things to do as a family is simply head back towards Salou’s seafront in the evening.

The palm-lined Passeig Jaume I runs alongside Llevant Beach and is ideal for an evening stroll. You’ll find restaurants, ice-cream shops and plenty of places to stop along the way, while the atmosphere becomes particularly lively during the summer months.

It’s also a good opportunity to see Salou’s fountains. The seafront is home to several water features, including the Font Lluminosa (Illuminated Fountain), which hosts light and water displays at scheduled times during parts of the year.

A great free evening with kids

This is one of those activities we’d deliberately leave unplanned. Have dinner, grab an ice cream and wander along the promenade rather than feeling you need another ticketed attraction every evening.

It’s particularly useful after PortAventura or a water park day when everyone still wants to go out but nobody wants another full activity.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Fountain displays and schedules can vary throughout the year, so check Salou’s official tourism information during your holiday rather than planning an evening around a specific show time months in advance.

10. Take a Family Day Trip to Tarragona 🏛️

If you want a break from theme parks and beach days, Tarragona makes an excellent family day trip from Salou.

The city is famous for its Roman history and gives children the chance to see something completely different from the resort. One of the highlights is the Roman amphitheatre, dramatically positioned close to the Mediterranean, while Tarragona’s historic centre is great for wandering around at a relaxed pace.

Tarragona works particularly well with older children and teenagers who enjoy exploring, history or photography. With younger children, we’d keep the itinerary fairly relaxed rather than trying to visit every historic site in one day.

How do you get from Salou to Tarragona?

Tarragona is close enough to Salou to visit independently, so you don’t necessarily need to book an organised excursion. Public transport, taxi or a hire car can all be options depending on where you’re staying and what else you plan to explore.

If you’ve hired a car for your Costa Dorada holiday, Tarragona is also easy to combine with other places outside Salou.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t over-plan Tarragona with children. Pick a couple of sights, explore the old town and leave time for lunch or an ice cream. It’ll feel much more like a holiday than dragging everyone around a checklist of Roman ruins.

Which Salou Activities Are Best for Your Family?

The best things to do in Salou with kids will depend heavily on their ages and interests. A family travelling with a four-year-old will have a very different holiday from one travelling with thrill-seeking teenagers.

Best for younger children

PortAventura’s SésamoAventura, Llevant or Ponent Beach, the Salou–Cambrils ferry and the gentler areas of the water parks are our top choices.

We’d also leave plenty of downtime rather than trying to fit a major attraction into every day.

Best for primary-school children

This is probably the easiest age for variety. Mix PortAventura, a water park, beach days, the ferry to Cambrils and shorter sections of the Camí de Ronda.

Things to Do in Salou with Teenagers

Salou is particularly good for teenagers, with major roller coasters, water parks, boat trips, beaches and plenty of activities away from the hotel.

We’ve covered our favourite things to do in Salou with teenagers in more detail below.

Best activities on a budget

Salou doesn’t have to be expensive every day. Beach days, the Camí de Ronda, exploring the seafront and visiting the smaller coves can all provide excellent family days without another attraction ticket.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t fill every day before you travel. For a one-week Salou holiday, we’d mix the major attractions with several slower beach, pool or exploring days. Children — and parents — will usually enjoy the big-ticket days more when they’re not exhausted.

Best Things to Do in Salou with Teenagers

Salou is a particularly good choice for families travelling with teenagers because there’s much more to do than simply spending the holiday around the pool.

PortAventura World

For thrill-seeking teenagers, PortAventura World is likely to be the highlight of the holiday. Major rides such as Shambhala, Dragon Khan and Furius Baco make it particularly appealing to older children who are tall enough for the biggest attractions.

Our PortAventura World family guide covers the parks, rides, tickets and our tips for planning your visit.

Ferrari Land

Ferrari Land sits alongside PortAventura Park and is another good option for teenagers who enjoy faster rides. Its headline attraction is Red Force, one of the most intense roller coasters in the resort.

Water Parks

A water-park day works particularly well with teenagers, especially during the hotter summer months. Slides and faster attractions give older children plenty to do without the day feeling aimed mainly at younger kids.

Beaches, Snorkelling & Boat Trips

Away from the theme parks, teenagers can enjoy snorkelling around Cap Salou, boat trips along the Costa Dorada and time on Salou’s beaches.

The Camí de Ronda coastal path is another good option if your family wants to explore beyond the main resort area.

Tarragona

For a change of scenery, Tarragona makes an easy day trip from Salou. It combines shops and restaurants with Roman history and gives families a completely different day out from the theme parks and beaches.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: If your teenagers love thrill rides, plan your PortAventura day early in the holiday. It gives everyone something big to look forward to and leaves plenty of time for a second visit if it’s the highlight of the trip.

Frequently Asked Questions About Things to Do in Salou with Kids

Is Salou good for a family holiday?

Yes. Salou is particularly well suited to families because it combines beaches, theme parks, water parks and plenty of free activities in a relatively compact resort. PortAventura World is the major attraction, but families can easily balance park days with beaches, boat trips and exploring the Costa Dorada.

What are the best things to do in Salou with kids?

Our top choice is PortAventura Park, particularly for families who enjoy theme parks. Other highlights include Ferrari Land, Caribe Aquatic Park, Salou’s beaches, the Cap Salou coves, a boat trip to Cambrils and walking sections of the Camí de Ronda.

Is there enough to do in Salou for a week?

Absolutely. A seven-night holiday gives families enough time to enjoy PortAventura World, a water park and several beach days without having to rush. You can also add a boat trip, explore the coastline or take a day trip to Tarragona.

What can you do in Salou for free with children?

Some of the best free activities include spending the day on Llevant or Ponent Beach, exploring the smaller coves, walking sections of the Camí de Ronda and enjoying Salou’s seafront in the evening.

Is Salou good for teenagers?

Yes — particularly teenagers who enjoy thrill rides. PortAventura Park and Ferrari Land are major attractions, while water parks, snorkelling, beaches and boat trips provide plenty of variety away from the roller coasters.

Do you need a car in Salou with kids?

No. Families staying centrally can reach many beaches, restaurants and attractions without hiring a car, while taxis and public transport can cover longer journeys. A hire car becomes more useful if you want to explore Tarragona and other parts of the Costa Dorada independently.

How many days do you need for PortAventura World?

We’d allow at least one full day for PortAventura Park. Families wanting to experience Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park as well should consider allocating additional days rather than trying to squeeze everything into one visit.

Final Verdict: Is Salou Good for Families?

Salou is one of those destinations where a family holiday can be as busy or as relaxed as you want it to be.

PortAventura World is undoubtedly the headline attraction and could easily fill several days of your holiday, particularly if you also visit Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park. But some of our favourite family experiences in Salou don’t require an expensive attraction ticket at all.

Spend a day on the beach, explore the Cap Salou coves, walk part of the Camí de Ronda or wander along the seafront with an ice cream in the evening and you’ll experience a very different side of the resort.

For most families, we’d recommend mixing the big attraction days with slower beach and exploring days rather than trying to cram something major into every day.

That’s ultimately what makes Salou such a strong family destination: theme parks, water parks, beaches and day trips can all be combined within the same holiday.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Verdict: If your family enjoys a mixture of theme parks and beach holidays, Salou is difficult to beat. Plan your must-do attractions before travelling, but leave enough free time to enjoy the beaches, coastline and spontaneous family days too.

Best Beaches in Salou for Families (2027): Complete Guide

Best beaches in Salou for families 2027

Salou is famous for PortAventura World, but its beaches are a huge part of what makes the resort such a good choice for a family holiday.

From long stretches of golden sand close to restaurants and shops to smaller coves tucked around Cap Salou, there are beaches to suit very different types of family day.

But which are the best beaches in Salou for families?

In this guide, we’ll compare Salou’s main beaches and coves, including the best options for younger children, swimming, snorkelling, quieter beach days and families staying close to the centre.

We’ll also cover facilities, accessibility, getting there and the practical things UK families should know before heading to the beach.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t automatically head to the nearest beach every day. Llevant and Ponent are excellent for easy family beach days, but exploring the smaller beaches and coves around Cap Salou can show you a completely different side of the resort.

Best Beaches in Salou for Families at a Glance

Best beaches in Salou for families including Llevant, Ponent, Capellans and Cala Font

Holiday Blueprint verdict: For most families staying in central Salou, we’d start with Llevant Beach. It combines a huge stretch of golden sand with easy access to the promenade, facilities, restaurants and family activities. If you’re travelling with younger children, Ponent Beach is another excellent choice thanks to its shallow, generally calm water and family facilities.

Llevant Beach – Best Overall Beach for Families

If you’re visiting Salou with children and only have time for one beach, Llevant Beach (Platja de Llevant) is our top choice.

Stretching for around 1.2km along Salou’s main seafront, it’s the resort’s largest and best-equipped beach. Its central location means you’re only a short walk from restaurants, shops and the Passeig Jaume I promenade, making it particularly convenient for families.

The beach has plenty of facilities, including showers, toilets, sunbed and parasol rental, children’s play areas and accessible facilities. During the main summer season, there’s also a dedicated Family Beach Area, with organised activities aimed at children and families.

Why families will like Llevant Beach

✔ Excellent central location – particularly convenient if you’re staying in central Salou.

✔ Plenty of space – the long stretch of sand makes it easier to find your own spot.

✔ Family facilities – playgrounds and summer family activities make it more than simply somewhere to swim.

✔ Food and drink nearby – you’re close to the promenade, restaurants and cafés.

✔ Easy to combine with sightseeing – ideal for a morning or afternoon at the beach without committing your entire day.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Llevant is extremely convenient, but that also makes it popular. During July and August, arriving earlier in the morning is a good idea if you want a prime spot closer to the water.

Ponent Beach – Best for Younger Families

Ponent Beach (Platja de Ponent) is another excellent choice for families and may actually be our pick over Llevant for parents travelling with younger children.

Located to the west of Salou’s centre, Ponent stretches for around 1km towards neighbouring Cambrils. It has fine golden sand and generally calm, shallow water, making it particularly appealing for families who want an easy beach day with children.

Ponent also has useful family facilities, including children’s play areas, showers, toilets and accessible beach facilities. Restaurants, cafés and other amenities are within easy reach, particularly towards the Salou end of the beach.

Why families will like Ponent Beach

✔ Shallow water – a particularly useful feature for families with younger children.

✔ Plenty of sand – there’s lots of room for playing and building sandcastles.

✔ Family-friendly facilities – including children’s play areas and accessible facilities.

✔ Convenient location – still close to central Salou without feeling quite as central as Llevant.

✔ Long beach walks – its position towards Cambrils makes it lovely for a walk along the coastline.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: If you’re staying on the western side of Salou, don’t automatically walk across town to Llevant every day. Ponent is an excellent family beach in its own right and could be the more convenient choice.

Capellans Beach – Best Smaller Beach Near Central Salou

Capellans Beach (Platja dels Capellans) is a great option for families who prefer a smaller beach but still want to stay within easy reach of central Salou.

At around 200 metres long, it’s considerably smaller than Llevant and Ponent. The beach sits in a sheltered bay surrounded by rocky headlands, giving it a more intimate feel than Salou’s two main beaches.

Despite its smaller size, Capellans still has useful facilities including showers, toilets and lifeguard services during the main season. It’s also connected to Salou’s coastal path, making it easy to combine with a walk along the coastline.

Why families will like Capellans Beach

✔ Smaller and more compact – useful if you don’t enjoy huge, sprawling beaches.

✔ Close to central Salou – convenient for families staying around the eastern side of the resort.

✔ Sheltered setting – the bay gives Capellans a different atmosphere from Llevant.

✔ Coastal-path access – easy to combine your beach visit with a walk and some lovely Mediterranean

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Capellans’ smaller size is part of its appeal, but it also means the beach can feel busy during peak summer periods. If you’re visiting in July or August, we’d aim for the morning rather than arriving at the busiest part of the afternoon.

Llarga Beach – Best for a Quieter Beach Day

If you’d like a little more space and a more relaxed setting, Llarga Beach (Platja Llarga) is one of the best beaches in Salou to consider.

Located away from the busiest part of the resort, Llarga has a more natural feel than Llevant or Ponent, with pine trees and greenery providing a scenic backdrop to the sand.

The beach stretches for around 600 metres, giving families plenty of room while still offering useful facilities during the main season.

Llarga is particularly appealing if you want to spend a few hours away from Salou’s busiest promenade and enjoy a slower-paced beach day.

Why families will like Llarga Beach

✔ Quieter atmosphere – a good alternative to Salou’s busiest central beaches.

✔ Attractive setting – pine trees and greenery give it a more natural Mediterranean feel.

✔ Plenty of space – useful during the busy summer months.

✔ Great change of pace – ideal for breaking up busy PortAventura and sightseeing days.

✔ Coastal views – another lovely section of Salou’s coastline to explore.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Llarga is less central than Llevant or Capellans, so check the walking distance from your hotel before setting off with beach bags and children. Depending on where you’re staying, a short taxi or local bus journey may be much easier.

Cala Font – Best for Snorkelling

Cala Font is a very different experience from Salou’s long central beaches. This small cove in Cap Salou is surrounded by rocky coastline and clear Mediterranean water, making it one of our favourite choices for families who enjoy swimming and snorkelling.

At only around 60 metres long, Cala Font is much smaller than Llevant, Ponent or Llarga, so don’t expect huge stretches of sand. What you get instead is a compact, scenic cove where the rocky areas around the bay can make snorkelling much more interesting.

There are also restaurants and accommodation nearby, so despite its more secluded appearance, you’re not completely cut off from facilities.

Why families will like Cala Font

✔ Great for snorkelling – rocky areas and clearer water make it more interesting for exploring underwater.

✔ Small and scenic – a completely different atmosphere from Salou’s main resort beaches.

✔ Good for older children – particularly those who enjoy swimming and exploring rather than simply playing on the sand.

✔ Beautiful Cap Salou setting – worth visiting even if you’re staying in central Salou.

✔ Restaurants nearby – useful if you want to turn your visit into a longer afternoon out.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: We’d particularly recommend Cala Font to families with confident swimmers and older children who want to try snorkelling. Pack water shoes if you have them, as rocky sections can be less comfortable underfoot than Salou’s big sandy beaches.

Cala Crancs – Best for Scenery & Snorkelling

Cala Crancs is one of the most attractive small coves around Cap Salou and a great choice for families who want to escape the busier resort beaches for a few hours.

At around 80 metres long, it’s a compact beach surrounded by rocky coastline and greenery. The clear water and rocks around the cove make it another good spot for snorkelling, particularly for families with older children who are confident in the water.

Cala Crancs feels noticeably different from central Salou. You won’t have the huge promenade and extensive facilities of Llevant, but that’s exactly why some families will prefer it.

Why families will like Cala Crancs

✔ Beautiful setting – one of the more scenic beach spots around Cap Salou.

✔ Good snorkelling – the rocky coastline gives swimmers more to explore.

✔ Quieter feel – ideal when you want a change from central Salou.

✔ Great for older children – especially confident swimmers who enjoy exploring the water.

✔ Small and relaxed – perfect for a few hours rather than necessarily an entire beach day.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Cala Crancs is another beach where we’d pack light. Smaller coves don’t offer the same level of facilities as Llevant or Ponent, so take water, sun protection and anything the children will need rather than assuming everything will be available beside the beach.

Llenguadets Cove – Best for Sunset Views

Llenguadets Cove (Cala Llenguadets) is a small, picturesque cove between Capellans and Llarga Beach and is particularly worth knowing about if your family enjoys exploring Salou’s coastline.

It’s much smaller than the resort’s main beaches, with a more secluded feel and attractive views across the Mediterranean. Its position also makes it a lovely spot later in the day, when you can enjoy the coastline as the sun begins to set.

Llenguadets isn’t necessarily the beach we’d choose for an entire family beach day, particularly with very young children and lots of equipment. Instead, it works brilliantly as part of a coastal walk or for a shorter swim and beach stop.

Why families will like Llenguadets Cove

✔ Beautiful sunset views – one of its biggest attractions.

✔ Small and picturesque – a nice contrast to Salou’s larger beaches.

✔ Great coastal-walk stop – easy to incorporate while exploring this part of the coastline.

✔ Good for a shorter visit – ideal when you don’t want another full beach day.

✔ Lovely photo opportunities – particularly towards the end of the day.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Rather than carrying everything down for a full day, we’d visit Llenguadets as part of an afternoon or early-evening walk along Salou’s coastal path. Combine it with Capellans or Llarga and you’ll see several very different parts of Salou’s coastline in one outing.

Are Salou’s Beaches Good for Children?

Yes. Salou is an excellent beach destination for families, particularly because you can choose between large, well-equipped sandy beaches and smaller coves around Cap Salou.

Choosing between the best beaches in Salou for children often comes down to their ages, where you’re staying and the type of beach day your family prefers.

For families with younger children, Llevant and Ponent are generally the easiest choices. Both offer long stretches of sand, good facilities and easy access to the resort, while Ponent is particularly appealing for its generally calm, shallow water.

Families with older children and teenagers may enjoy exploring further along the coast. Cala Font and Cala Crancs offer a more adventurous beach experience, particularly for confident swimmers who want to try snorkelling.

One advantage of staying in Salou is that you don’t have to choose a single beach for the entire holiday. You could spend one day enjoying the facilities at Llevant, another relaxing at Llarga and then explore the smaller Cap Salou coves later in the week.

What about toddlers?

If you’re travelling with toddlers, we’d prioritise easy access, nearby facilities and shallow water over finding the prettiest cove.

Ponent and Llevant are much easier when you’re carrying towels, inflatables, pushchairs and everything else that seems to accompany a small child to the beach.

The smaller coves are beautiful, but steps, rocky sections and fewer facilities can make them less convenient with very young children.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: If you’re travelling with younger children, choose your main family beach based partly on where your hotel is located. Being able to walk back easily for naps, forgotten items or a break from the midday sun can be more valuable than travelling across Salou for a supposedly “better” beach.

What Facilities Do Salou’s Beaches Have?

Facilities vary depending on which Salou beach you choose. As you’d expect, the large central beaches generally have far more facilities than the smaller coves around Cap Salou.

Llevant and Ponent are the easiest choices if facilities are important to your family. Depending on the beach and season, facilities can include toilets, showers, lifeguard services, sunbed and parasol hire, children’s play areas and accessible beach services.

You’ll also find plenty of places to eat and drink close to Salou’s main beaches, making it easy to leave the sand for lunch without having to travel far.

The smaller beaches and coves generally have fewer facilities, so it’s worth planning ahead if you’re heading away from central Salou.

Are Salou’s beaches accessible?

Salou’s main beaches include accessibility measures designed to make the coastline easier to enjoy for visitors with reduced mobility.

Llevant and Ponent are particularly useful options because of their more extensive facilities and accessible beach services. If accessibility is important for your family, we’d recommend checking the current facilities at your chosen beach shortly before travelling, as services can vary by season.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t assume every small cove has the same facilities as Llevant or Ponent. If you’re exploring Cap Salou, take plenty of water, sun protection and anything else you’ll need for the children.

Getting Around Salou’s Beaches

One of the advantages of a family holiday in Salou is that you don’t necessarily need a hire car to explore the beaches.

If you’re staying in central Salou, Llevant, Ponent and Capellans may all be within walking distance depending on your hotel location. The seafront and pedestrian areas also make walking between the resort and the main beaches relatively straightforward.

Reaching Llarga Beach and the smaller Cap Salou coves can require a longer walk. Local buses and taxis can therefore be useful, particularly when travelling with younger children, beach bags or pushchairs.

🚗 Planning to Explore Beyond Salou?

You don’t need a hire car just to enjoy Salou’s main beaches, but having one can be useful if you’re planning to explore more of the Costa Dorada during your holiday. Compare car hire prices and check what’s included before booking.

Exploring Salou’s coastal path

Salou’s Camí de Ronda coastal path is one of the best ways to see a different side of the resort.

The route follows sections of the coastline and connects several beaches and coves, offering Mediterranean views along the way. It’s particularly useful for combining places such as Capellans, Llenguadets and Llarga rather than treating every beach as a separate trip.

However, families should remember that parts of a coastal path can involve steps, slopes and uneven sections, so it isn’t the same as walking along Salou’s flat seafront promenade.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: With children, don’t feel you need to walk the entire coastal route. Pick a manageable section, stop at one or two beaches and use a taxi or bus for the return journey if everyone’s had enough.

Beach Safety in Salou: What Families Should Know

Salou’s main beaches are well set up for families, but normal beach and swimming precautions still apply — particularly during the hotter summer months.

Lifeguard services operate on many of Salou’s beaches during the main season, but families should always check the beach warning flags before entering the water and follow any instructions from lifeguards.

Conditions can change from one day to the next, so don’t assume the sea is safe simply because it was calm the previous day.

Understanding the beach flags

🟢 Green flag – swimming conditions are generally considered safe, although normal care is still required.

🟡 Yellow flag – take extra care. Conditions may make swimming more difficult or potentially dangerous.

🔴 Red flag – do not enter the water.

Children should always be supervised around the sea regardless of the flag being displayed.

Sun and heat

The Mediterranean sun can be particularly strong during the summer. Use high-factor sunscreen, reapply it regularly and make sure children drink plenty of water throughout the day.

If you’re visiting in July or August, consider taking a break from prolonged direct sun around the hottest part of the day. A long lunch or return to the hotel can make a full beach day much more comfortable.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: A parasol or shaded spot is particularly worthwhile with children. Don’t rely solely on sunscreen — combining shade, hats, suitable clothing and regular sunscreen application provides much better protection during long beach days.

Frequently Asked Questions About Salou Beaches

Which is the best beach in Salou for families?

For most families, we’d choose Llevant Beach. It’s large, centrally located and has excellent facilities close by. Families with younger children may prefer Ponent Beach for its generally calm, shallow water.

Which Salou beach is best for young children?

Ponent Beach is one of our favourites for younger children thanks to its long sandy beach, shallow water and family-friendly facilities. Llevant is another excellent option, particularly if you’re staying in central Salou.

Does Salou have sandy beaches?

Yes. Salou has several sandy beaches, including the large Llevant and Ponent beaches, as well as smaller beaches and coves around the coastline. The experience varies considerably between the large central beaches and the smaller Cap Salou coves.

Which beach in Salou is best for snorkelling?

We’d look at Cala Font or Cala Crancs. Their smaller coves and rocky surroundings make them more interesting for snorkelling than Salou’s large central beaches, particularly for confident swimmers.

Can you walk to the beaches in Salou?

Yes. If you’re staying centrally, several of Salou’s main beaches can be reached on foot. The Camí de Ronda coastal path also connects parts of the coastline, although reaching some Cap Salou beaches may be easier by bus or taxi depending on where you’re staying.

Do you need a car for Salou’s beaches?

No. A hire car isn’t necessary for visiting Salou’s main beaches. Walking, local buses and taxis are usually sufficient. A car becomes more useful if you’re planning to explore other beaches and destinations around the Costa Dorada during your holiday.

Are Salou beaches free?

Yes. Salou’s public beaches are free to access. Optional extras such as sunbeds, parasols, water activities or parking may cost extra.

Final Verdict: Which Salou Beach Should You Choose?

The best beaches in Salou offer far more variety than many first-time visitors expect.

For most families, Llevant Beach is our best overall choice thanks to its central location, long stretch of sand and excellent facilities. Families travelling with younger children should also seriously consider Ponent Beach, while Llarga Beach is a great option when you want a quieter day away from the busiest part of the resort.

If you’re travelling with older children who enjoy swimming and snorkelling, exploring Cala Font and Cala Crancs is well worth the effort. And for something completely different, an evening walk past Llenguadets Cove shows off another side of Salou’s coastline.

The real advantage is that you don’t have to choose just one. Salou is compact enough that families can experience several very different beaches during the same holiday — combining lazy beach days with PortAventura, water parks and exploring the wider Costa Dorada.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Verdict: Start with Llevant or Ponent, then make time for at least one of the smaller beaches or coves. It’s the best way to experience both sides of Salou’s coastline.

Is the Location Good?

For PortAventura World, it’s excellent.

For Salou itself, there’s a trade-off.

You’re not staying on Salou’s beachfront promenade, so families wanting restaurants, shops and the beach immediately outside their hotel may prefer a central Salou property.

But if PortAventura is one of the main reasons for your holiday, the location is difficult to beat.

Holiday Blueprint Verdict

🎢 Best for PortAventura

Choose Hotel Gold River if your family expects to spend multiple days at PortAventura World.

The combination of park access, immersive theming and potentially valuable included park admission can make it worth comparing the total holiday cost, rather than simply comparing the nightly room price with hotels in Salou.

Golden Port Salou & Spa – Best for Pools & All-Inclusive

Best for: Families who want plenty of swimming pools, children’s facilities and the convenience of an all-inclusive option while staying close to central Salou.

If spending plenty of time around the pool is an important part of your holiday, Golden Port Salou & Spa deserves a place near the top of your shortlist.

The hotel combines extensive pool facilities with family entertainment, children’s areas and different board options, making it a particularly appealing choice if you want a resort-style holiday without staying inside PortAventura World.

Golden Port Salou and Spa children's splash pool and water slides

Why Families Will Love It

The standout feature here is the choice of pools and water facilities.

Golden Port Salou & Spa has an impressive selection of swimming areas, including facilities specifically designed for children and a splash area with slides.

Other family-friendly features include:

  • Multiple outdoor swimming pools
  • Children’s splash area and slides
  • Kids’ club and family entertainment
  • Family-friendly accommodation
  • Spa facilities for adults
  • Buffet dining
  • All-inclusive board option
  • Central Salou location

This is the sort of hotel where you can comfortably have a hotel day between visits to PortAventura, the water parks and the beach without the children becoming bored.

Is All-Inclusive Worth It?

It depends on how you plan to spend your holiday.

If you expect to spend several full days relaxing at the hotel, all-inclusive can be extremely convenient — particularly for families who would otherwise be regularly buying drinks, snacks and meals around the pool.

However, if you’re planning to spend most days at PortAventura World, Aquopolis, Caribe Aquatic Park or exploring Salou, compare the price difference carefully. You may end up paying for meals and drinks at the hotel while you’re elsewhere.

Is the Location Good?

Yes. Golden Port Salou & Spa gives you easier access to central Salou than the PortAventura resort hotels while still keeping the theme parks within easy reach.

That makes it a good compromise if your family wants a mixture of pool days, beach time, evenings in Salou and theme park days.

Holiday Blueprint Verdict

🍹 Best for Pools & All-Inclusive

Choose Golden Port Salou & Spa if you want the hotel itself to be a major part of your holiday.

It’s particularly appealing for a 7–14 night family stay, where having excellent pools and entertainment gives you somewhere to relax between busier sightseeing and theme park days.

Hotel Mansión de Lucy – Best Luxury

Best for: Families who want the most luxurious PortAventura World experience and are prepared to pay extra for premium hotel benefits.

If you’re looking for something more special than a typical family theme park hotel, Hotel Mansión de Lucy is PortAventura World’s standout luxury option.

This 5-star hotel is themed as an elegant Victorian mansion from the Far West and offers a much smaller, more exclusive atmosphere than the resort’s larger hotels.

Hotel Mansión de Lucy at PortAventura World with swimming pool

Why Families Will Love It

The biggest attraction isn’t simply the upgraded rooms — it’s the package of PortAventura benefits that comes with the stay.

Current benefits include:

  • Unlimited access to PortAventura Park throughout your stay
  • Unlimited access to Ferrari Land throughout your stay
  • Express Unlimited throughout your stay
  • Direct access to PortAventura Park through the Far West area
  • Deluxe Superior rooms accommodating families of up to four
  • Larger suites accommodating up to six
  • Exclusive restaurant
  • Swimming pool
  • Free hotel parking, subject to availability
  • Access to Hotel Gold River facilities
  • Discounted Caribe Aquatic Park tickets available for hotel guests

Guests can also access discounted tickets for Caribe Aquatic Park, making Mansión de Lucy particularly attractive if you’re planning to combine PortAventura’s theme parks with a water park day.

For families who want to experience as many of PortAventura’s major rides as possible, Express Unlimited could be particularly valuable during busy periods.

Is Mansión de Lucy Worth the Extra Money?

This is where we’d look beyond the room price.

Mansión de Lucy will normally cost considerably more than a standard Salou hotel, so it isn’t going to represent good value for every family.

But compare the whole package, particularly if you’re visiting during a busy period.

If your family would otherwise buy PortAventura tickets, Ferrari Land tickets and Express passes separately, some of that premium hotel price is buying benefits you’d potentially pay for anyway.

For a family planning several intensive PortAventura days, that can make the price difference more interesting than it initially appears.

If you’re only planning one day at PortAventura and expect to spend most of your holiday at the beach or exploring Salou, we’d save the money and choose one of the other hotels in this guide.

Is the Location Good?

For PortAventura World, it’s exceptional.

You’ll have direct access to PortAventura Park, making it easy to maximise your park days and return to the hotel when you want a break.

However, just like Hotel Gold River, this isn’t the hotel we’d choose if your priority is stepping straight onto Salou’s beachfront promenade every evening.

Holiday Blueprint Verdict

⭐ Best Luxury

Choose Hotel Mansión de Lucy if PortAventura World is the centrepiece of your holiday and your budget allows for something special.

The combination of 5-star accommodation, direct park access, unlimited PortAventura and Ferrari Land admission and Express Unlimited makes this much more than simply paying extra for a nicer hotel room.

For families who will make full use of those benefits, it’s one of the most interesting premium options in Salou.

Ponient Dorada Palace – Best Value

Best for: Families looking for a good-value Salou hotel while still getting useful PortAventura World benefits.

Ponient Dorada Palace by PortAventura World is one of the most interesting options if you’re trying to keep accommodation costs sensible without giving up easy access to the theme parks.

Unlike the hotels located inside PortAventura World, you’re staying in Salou itself, giving you a better balance between the beach, town centre and theme parks.

Ponient Dorada Palace family hotel and swimming pool in Salou

Why Families Will Love It

There’s plenty here for days when you’re not heading to the parks.

Family-friendly features include:

  • Three outdoor pools plus a children’s pool
  • Kids’ club and family entertainment
  • Standard rooms, Junior Suites and apartments
  • Apartments with kitchen facilities
  • Buffet restaurant
  • Balconies in family rooms
  • Easy access to central Salou and the beach
  • PortAventura World transport during selected high-season dates

But the biggest potential benefit is the hotel’s relationship with PortAventura World.

When booked on an eligible hotel + tickets package, stays can include admission to PortAventura Park and Ferrari Land. Longer qualifying stays can include two park days, while additional park tickets may also be available at a discount.

Is It Really Good Value?

Potentially, yes — but compare the whole package rather than just the room price.

A cheaper Salou hotel can stop looking quite so cheap once you’ve added separate PortAventura tickets and transport.

With Ponient Dorada Palace, the combination of accommodation, potential park admission and transport can make the overall holiday cost very competitive for families planning to visit PortAventura anyway.

Is the Location Good?

Yes.

The hotel is in central Salou, around 800 metres from the beach and approximately 1.5 km from PortAventura World.

That gives you a nice middle ground: you’re not isolated inside the theme park resort, but PortAventura is still extremely close.

Holiday Blueprint Verdict

💰 Best Value

Ponient Dorada Palace is one we’d definitely price-check against both central Salou hotels and PortAventura’s on-site hotels.

For families who want beach time, evenings in Salou and a couple of PortAventura days, it could offer one of the best overall compromises on this list.

Blaumar Hotel – Best for Beach & Central Salou

Best for: Families who want the beach, promenade, restaurants and central Salou on their doorstep rather than staying primarily for PortAventura.

If your idea of a Salou holiday involves beach mornings, evenings along the promenade and plenty of restaurants within walking distance, Blaumar Hotel is one of the strongest options on our shortlist.

Its biggest advantage is location. The hotel sits directly on Passeig Jaume I, opposite Llevant Beach, putting you right in the heart of Salou’s main seafront area.

Blaumar Hotel family swimming pool in Salou

Why Families Will Love It

Blaumar combines its excellent location with plenty of facilities aimed at families.

Highlights include:

  • Excellent position opposite Llevant Beach
  • Outdoor swimming pool
  • Children’s pool and water-play facilities
  • Kids’ club and entertainment
  • Family accommodation
  • Restaurants and bars
  • Spa and wellness facilities
  • Salou’s promenade immediately outside
  • Shops and restaurants within easy walking distance

This is a particularly good choice if you don’t want to rely on taxis or transport every evening just to enjoy Salou.

What About PortAventura?

PortAventura World is still easily accessible, but unlike Hotel Gold River or Mansión de Lucy, the theme parks aren’t the entire focus of your stay.

That’s exactly why we like Blaumar for a more balanced Salou holiday.

You can spend a day riding roller coasters, another at a water park and then have days where you simply walk across to the beach or enjoy Salou itself.

Is the Location Worth Paying More For?

For many families, yes.

Being able to walk to the beach, restaurants and promenade can make a noticeable difference over a 7–14 night holiday — particularly if you don’t intend to hire a car.

Families with younger children may also appreciate being able to return to the hotel easily during beach days rather than carrying everything across Salou.

Holiday Blueprint Verdict

🏖️ Best for Beach & Central Salou

Choose Blaumar Hotel if you want Salou itself to be a major part of your holiday, rather than treating the town simply as a base for PortAventura.

For families wanting a mixture of beach, restaurants, swimming pools, water parks and theme parks, its location is difficult to beat.

Estival ElDorado Resort – Best for an Active Family Holiday

Best for: Active families who want a beachfront resort with water fun, children’s activities and plenty to do without needing to leave the hotel every day.

There’s one important thing to know straight away: Estival ElDorado Resort is in nearby Cambrils rather than Salou itself.

We’ve included it because it’s a genuinely interesting alternative for families who don’t need to be in central Salou and would prefer a spacious beachfront resort with lots of activities.

Estival ElDorado Resort Splash Park for families in Cambrils

Why Families Will Love It

Estival ElDorado combines a beach holiday with the facilities you’d expect from a large family resort.

Highlights include:

  • Beachfront location
  • Children’s Splash Park with slides and water games
  • Multiple swimming pools
  • Estivi kids’ club
  • Daily family entertainment
  • Sports facilities and gym
  • Water activities
  • Spa and wellness facilities
  • Restaurants and bars
  • All-inclusive option

There’s also a nautical centre offering activities including paddleboarding, canoeing and windsurfing, making this one of the most interesting choices on our list for families who like to stay active.

Is Cambrils a Good Alternative to Salou?

Definitely — for the right family.

Cambrils has a more relaxed feel than central Salou while still putting you within the wider Costa Dorada holiday area.

If your priority is walking to Salou’s main promenade every evening, choose a hotel such as Blaumar instead.

But if you’d rather have a beachfront resort where you can comfortably spend entire days without leaving, Estival ElDorado makes a lot of sense.

What About PortAventura World?

You can still visit PortAventura World from Cambrils, but it isn’t as convenient as staying at Hotel Gold River, Mansión de Lucy or one of the Salou hotels closer to the parks.

We’d therefore choose ElDorado for families who want PortAventura to be part of the holiday rather than the entire holiday.

Holiday Blueprint Verdict

🏄 Best for an Active Family Holiday

Estival ElDorado is our wildcard choice.

It’s not technically in Salou, but its beachfront setting, Splash Park, children’s activities and huge choice of sports make it worth considering if you want a more relaxed resort holiday alongside your PortAventura days.

For a 10–14 night Costa Dorada holiday, we’d definitely compare it with the central Salou options before booking.

Which Salou Hotel Should You Choose?

With so many family hotels in and around Salou, the best choice really depends on the type of holiday you’re planning. Use our quick comparison below to see which hotel best matches your priorities, whether that’s PortAventura, the beach, pools, all-inclusive or a more active family holiday.

Comparison of the best family hotels in Salou for UK families

Should You Stay in Salou or at PortAventura World?

Choosing between a hotel in Salou itself and one at PortAventura World can completely change the feel of your holiday. Neither is automatically better — it depends on how much time your family plans to spend in the theme parks.

Stay in Salou If…

Salou is likely to be the better choice if you want a more varied family holiday.

You’ll have easier access to:

  • Llevant Beach and Salou’s other beaches
  • The seafront promenade
  • Restaurants, bars and shops
  • Water parks and other Costa Dorada attractions
  • More choice of hotels and board options
  • Relaxed days away from the theme parks

Hotels such as Blaumar Hotel, Golden Port Salou & Spa and Ponient Dorada Palace work particularly well if PortAventura is only one part of your holiday.

Stay at PortAventura World If…

A PortAventura hotel makes much more sense if the theme parks are going to be the main focus of your trip.

The biggest advantages can include:

  • Extremely convenient access to PortAventura Park
  • Park admission included with eligible stays
  • Less travelling before and after long park days
  • Immersive themed hotels
  • The ability to return to your hotel during the day
  • Additional benefits depending on the hotel and room booked

Hotel Gold River is our favourite for the overall PortAventura experience, while Hotel Mansión de Lucy is the luxury choice if your budget stretches further.

Holiday Blueprint Recommendation

For a 7-night holiday: If you’re planning several full PortAventura days, staying at PortAventura World can make a lot of sense — particularly when the value of included park admission is taken into account.

For a 10–14-night holiday: We’d generally favour staying in Salou or even splitting the stay. You could spend a few nights at PortAventura World for intensive theme park days, then move to a beachfront or resort hotel for the rest of the holiday.

A split stay can give you the best of both worlds: maximum convenience for PortAventura without sacrificing the beach-holiday side of Salou.

How to Book a Family Hotel in Salou for the Best Value

Compare the Total Holiday Cost

Don’t automatically choose the hotel with the cheapest nightly rate.

If you’re visiting PortAventura World, compare the cost of accommodation plus park tickets, transport and any extras. A more expensive hotel package that includes park admission can sometimes work out better overall.

Compare Different Board Options

Check the difference between room only, breakfast, half board and all-inclusive.

All-inclusive can be excellent value if you’re planning plenty of hotel and pool days. If you’ll be out at theme parks and attractions most days, however, you could end up paying for meals you’re rarely at the hotel to eat.

Check the Room Carefully

This is particularly important when travelling with older children.

Don’t assume that every “family room” gives everyone a proper bed. Check:

  • Bed configuration
  • Maximum occupancy
  • Room size
  • Balcony or terrace
  • Air conditioning
  • Fridge or kitchenette
  • Whether children sleep on sofa beds

For longer stays, a little extra space can be worth paying for.

Look at the Location on a Map

Two hotels described as being “in Salou” can offer very different holidays.

Decide whether you’d rather be close to the beach and promenade, PortAventura World or in quieter Cap Salou before booking.

Book Early for School Holidays

If you’re travelling during the UK school summer holidays, Easter or half-term, we’d start comparing hotels early.

The best-value family rooms and popular room configurations can disappear before the hotel itself sells out.

Holiday Blueprint Tip

Don’t compare hotels on price alone. Compare what your family actually gets for the total cost.

A £200 saving isn’t necessarily a bargain if you then spend considerably more on park tickets, transport or meals.

Salou Family Hotels FAQs

What Is the Best Area of Salou for Families?

For most first-time family visitors, central Salou near Llevant Beach is hard to beat. You’ll have the beach, promenade, restaurants and shops within easy reach while still being close to PortAventura World.

Cap Salou is worth considering if you’d prefer somewhere quieter and more resort-like, while staying at PortAventura World makes most sense when the theme parks are the main focus of your holiday.

What Is the Best Family Hotel in Salou?

Our best overall choice is H10 Mediterranean Village because of its combination of pools, children’s water facilities, family entertainment and quieter Cap Salou location.

However, there isn’t one hotel that’s best for everybody. Blaumar Hotel is better for the beach and central Salou, while Hotel Gold River is our choice for families prioritising PortAventura World.

Is All-Inclusive Worth It in Salou?

It can be, particularly if your family enjoys spending full days around the hotel pool.

For a holiday packed with PortAventura, water parks, beach days and excursions, we’d compare all-inclusive carefully against half board or breakfast. There’s little value in paying for lunch and drinks at your hotel if you’re regularly elsewhere during the day.

What Is the Best Salou Hotel for PortAventura?

Our choice is Hotel Gold River.

Its location at PortAventura World and theme park benefits make it particularly convenient for families planning several park days.

For a more luxurious experience, Hotel Mansión de Lucy is our premium choice.

What Is the Best Salou Hotel Near the Beach?

We’d choose Blaumar Hotel for families prioritising the beach.

Its position opposite Llevant Beach and directly on Salou’s main promenade makes it particularly convenient if you want to combine beach days with restaurants and evenings in town.

Can You Stay in Salou Without Hiring a Car?

Absolutely.

If you choose a well-located hotel, you can comfortably enjoy Salou without hiring a car. The beach, restaurants and shops are easily accessible from central hotels, while public transport and taxis can be used for attractions further away.

A hire car becomes more useful if you’re planning to explore considerably more of the Costa Dorada.

Is Salou Good for Teenagers?

Yes — particularly for families who want more than a traditional beach holiday.

Between PortAventura World, Ferrari Land, Caribe Aquatic Park, Aquopolis Costa Dorada, beaches and water activities, there’s plenty for older children and teenagers.

Should You Book a Salou Hotel and PortAventura Tickets Separately?

Always compare both options before booking.

Some PortAventura hotel packages include valuable park admission, while other Salou hotels may offer a lower accommodation price but require you to buy park tickets separately.

Compare the total cost for your family, rather than simply looking at the hotel price.

Our Verdict: Best Family Hotels in Salou

Choosing the best family hotel in Salou ultimately comes down to what you want your holiday to revolve around.

For the best all-round family resort, our overall winner is H10 Mediterranean Village. Its pools, children’s water facilities and quieter Cap Salou setting make it an excellent choice for families who want plenty to do at the hotel.

If PortAventura World is the main reason for your trip, we’d choose Hotel Gold River. For families looking for something more luxurious, Hotel Mansión de Lucy takes things up another level.

For a traditional Salou holiday combining the beach, promenade and restaurants with days at the theme parks, Blaumar Hotel is difficult to beat for location.

And if pools and an all-inclusive option are high on your wish list, Golden Port Salou & Spa deserves serious consideration.

🏆 Holiday Blueprint Top Picks

Best Overall: H10 Mediterranean Village
Best for PortAventura: Hotel Gold River
Best for Pools & All-Inclusive: Golden Port Salou & Spa
Best Luxury: Hotel Mansión de Lucy
Best Value: Ponient Dorada Palace
Best for Beach & Central Salou: Blaumar Hotel
Best for an Active Family Holiday: Estival ElDorado Resort

Whichever you choose, compare the whole holiday cost — accommodation, board basis, park tickets and transport — rather than simply booking whichever hotel has the lowest nightly price.

Best water parks in Salou for families – Caribe Aquatic Park and Aquopolis Costa Dorada

Planning a family holiday to Salou and wondering which water park is best? The Costa Dorada has some fantastic options, from huge slides and wave pools to splash areas designed for younger children.

The two main water parks near Salou are PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park and Aquopolis Costa Dorada, and both offer very different days out.

Caribe Aquatic Park is ideal if you’re already planning to visit PortAventura World, with tropical theming, thrilling slides and plenty for families. Aquopolis Costa Dorada, in nearby La Pineda, is another excellent choice and has a great mixture of adrenaline-filled slides, pools and attractions for younger children.

In this guide, we’ll compare the best water parks in Salou and Costa Dorada, including the rides, children’s areas, ticket options, who each park is best for and our tips for getting the most from your visit.

Best Water Parks in Salou at a Glance

If you only have time for one water park during your Salou holiday, your best choice will depend on whether you’re looking for big thrill slides, attractions for younger children, or a water park that fits easily into a PortAventura holiday.

Holiday Blueprint Verdict: If you’re already visiting PortAventura World, we’d choose Caribe Aquatic Park. It’s incredibly convenient to combine with a PortAventura holiday and has enough attractions for everyone from younger children to teenagers looking for bigger slides.

However, Aquopolis Costa Dorada shouldn’t be overlooked. It’s particularly worth considering if you’re staying in Salou or La Pineda and want a dedicated water park day without buying into the wider PortAventura experience.

Caribe Aquatic Park vs Aquopolis Costa Dorada water parks near Salou

PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park

If you’re already planning to visit PortAventura World, Caribe Aquatic Park is our top water park choice near Salou.

Part of the PortAventura World resort, the park combines tropical Caribbean theming with huge water slides, family attractions, pools and dedicated areas for younger children. It’s particularly convenient for families staying at a PortAventura hotel or combining several of the resort’s parks during their holiday.

Caribe Aquatic Park at PortAventura World near Salou

Best Rides at Caribe Aquatic Park

There’s a good mixture of family attractions and serious water slides, so it’s not just a park for younger children.

Some of the highlights include:

  • King Khajuna – the headline thrill slide and one for the bravest members of the family.
  • El Tifón – high-speed slides starting around 15 metres above the ground.
  • Ciclón Tropical – a twisting high-speed body slide.
  • Rapid Race – grab a mat and race your family or friends to the bottom.
  • El Torrente – a rafting-style family ride that’s great fun as a group.
  • El Triángulo de las Bermudas – the park’s large wave pool.

Coral Bay

One of the biggest additions to Caribe Aquatic Park is Coral Bay, a large family area that adds even more attractions to the park.

Its headline attraction is Cyclone Water Coaster, a family water coaster combining the feel of a water slide with uphill sections.

You’ll also find Bahía Pirata, a huge water obstacle course, The Crab multi-slide tower and Splash Port, an area aimed at younger children with slides and water-play features.

This makes Caribe Aquatic Park a particularly good option for families with children of different ages.

Is Caribe Aquatic Park Good for Younger Children?

Yes. While attractions such as King Khajuna grab most of the attention, there’s plenty for younger visitors too.

Areas including Sésamo Beach, Cayo Cookie and La Laguna de Woody give smaller children somewhere to splash and play away from the park’s biggest thrill slides.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Visit the most popular slides as early as possible, particularly during July and August. You can then slow the pace down with the pools and family areas later in the day.

🎟️ Caribe Aquatic Park Tickets

If you’re also visiting PortAventura Park, a multi-park ticket can be better value than purchasing your park days separately.

GetYourGuide currently offers ticket options combining PortAventura Park, Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park, making it worth comparing prices before you book.

Aquopolis Costa Dorada

Located in La Pineda, just a short distance from Salou, Aquopolis Costa Dorada is the other major water park in the area and a great alternative to Caribe Aquatic Park.

Unlike Caribe, Aquopolis isn’t part of a larger theme park resort, so it works particularly well if you simply want to dedicate a full day of your holiday to waterslides, pools and family attractions.

Aquopolis Costa Dorada water park in La Pineda near Salou

Best Rides at Aquopolis Costa Dorada

Aquopolis has a good mixture of high-adrenaline slides and attractions that the whole family can enjoy.

Some of the highlights include:

  • Kamikaze – one for thrill seekers, with a steep, high-speed descent.
  • Hurricane – a fast and twisting waterslide.
  • Boomerang – a dramatic ride where you race down before climbing high up the opposite wall.
  • Black Hole – a twisting enclosed slide where much of the ride takes place in darkness.
  • Speed Race – compete against family and friends on parallel racing slides.
  • Surf Waimea – another good option for visitors looking for something more adventurous.

Is Aquopolis Good for Younger Children?

Yes. Aquopolis isn’t only about the big slides.

There are dedicated children’s areas with smaller slides, shallow water and interactive features, making it suitable for families travelling with younger children as well as teenagers.

This mixture is one of Aquopolis Costa Dorada’s biggest strengths — families can spend an entire day here without everyone needing to be confident enough for the park’s largest slides.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: If you’re staying in La Pineda, Aquopolis is particularly convenient. From Salou, it’s also close enough to make an easy day trip without needing to stay at PortAventura World.

🎟️ Aquopolis Costa Dorada Tickets

Booking your tickets before you travel means you can compare prices and have your water park day organised before arriving in Salou.

Caribe Aquatic Park vs Aquopolis – Which Is Better?

Both are excellent family water parks, but we’d choose them for slightly different types of holiday.

Best for Thrill Seekers: Aquopolis

Winner: Aquopolis Costa Dorada

Aquopolis has more than 20 attractions across its large 110,000 m² site, with plenty aimed at visitors looking for bigger thrills. Kamikaze, Boomerang, Black Hole, Splash and Huracán make it particularly appealing to older children and teenagers.

Caribe Aquatic Park still has some excellent thrill rides — especially King Khajuna — so adrenaline seekers certainly won’t be disappointed.

Best for Younger Children: Aquopolis

Winner: Aquopolis Costa Dorada

Aquopolis has an impressive 4,000 m² children’s area, with attractions including Mini Park, Treasure Island and Tortuga Adventure.

Caribe Aquatic Park also caters very well for younger families, particularly with its children’s areas and the newer Coral Bay attractions, but Aquopolis gets our vote if younger children are the main priority.

Best for PortAventura Holidays: Caribe Aquatic Park

Winner: Caribe Aquatic Park

This one is easy.

If PortAventura Park and Ferrari Land are already part of your holiday plans, Caribe Aquatic Park fits naturally into the same trip. Multi-park tickets can also make it easier to combine all three.

Best for a Dedicated Water Park Day: Aquopolis

Winner: Aquopolis Costa Dorada

If you’re staying in Salou or La Pineda and simply want the biggest possible water park day, we’d choose Aquopolis.

It’s larger, has a huge selection of attractions and offers plenty for both thrill seekers and younger children.

🏆 Holiday Blueprint Verdict

Choose Caribe Aquatic Park if: you’re already visiting PortAventura World, love immersive theming or want to combine theme parks and a water park during the same holiday.

Choose Aquopolis Costa Dorada if: you want a dedicated full-day water park experience, have children of different ages, or you’re staying around Salou or La Pineda without spending several days at PortAventura.

If we could only choose one purely as a water park, we’d pick Aquopolis Costa Dorada.

But for a family already planning several days at PortAventura World, we’d choose Caribe Aquatic Park instead.

Caribe Aquatic Park vs Aquopolis Costa Dorada comparison

Is It Worth Visiting Both Water Parks in Salou?

If you’re spending a week or longer in Salou, visiting both water parks can definitely be worthwhile — particularly if your family loves water slides.

The parks are different enough that they don’t feel like you’re simply repeating the same day twice.

Caribe Aquatic Park works brilliantly as part of a wider PortAventura World holiday, while Aquopolis Costa Dorada feels more like a dedicated water park day.

For a typical 7-night Salou family holiday, however, we wouldn’t say you need to visit both. If you’re also planning several days at PortAventura Park and Ferrari Land, your itinerary can quickly become very theme-park heavy.

Our Recommendation

Visiting PortAventura World? Choose Caribe Aquatic Park.

Staying mainly in Salou or La Pineda? Choose Aquopolis Costa Dorada.

Staying 10–14 nights and your children love water parks? Do both.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t schedule your two water park days back-to-back. Give yourself a beach, pool or relaxing Salou day in between — you’ll appreciate it!

How Much Are Water Park Tickets in Salou?

Water park ticket prices around Salou vary depending on the date you visit, how far in advance you book and whether you choose a standalone or multi-park ticket.

As a rough guide, current online prices can start at around:

  • Caribe Aquatic Park: from around €35 per adult for a one-day ticket.
  • Aquopolis Costa Dorada: from around €25 per adult when booked online.

Children and other eligible visitors can usually qualify for reduced admission.

Prices and promotions change throughout the season, so we’d always recommend checking the live price for your actual holiday dates rather than relying on a fixed ticket price.

Are PortAventura Multi-Park Tickets Better Value?

They certainly can be.

If you’re planning to visit PortAventura Park, Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park, look at the multi-day and multi-park tickets before buying separate admission for each park.

For families already planning several PortAventura days, this can make much more sense than treating Caribe Aquatic Park as a completely separate attraction.

Should You Book Salou Water Park Tickets in Advance?

We would.

Booking ahead means you can compare the available ticket options before travelling and have one less thing to organise once you’re in Salou.

It’s particularly worth checking advance prices if you’re travelling during the busy summer school holidays.

Both Caribe Aquatic Park and Aquopolis Costa Dorada are easy to reach from Salou, so you don’t necessarily need to hire a car just to visit the water parks.

Getting to Caribe Aquatic Park from Salou

Caribe Aquatic Park is located at PortAventura World, just outside central Salou.

If you’re staying in central Salou, your main options are:

  • Taxi: One of the easiest options for families and particularly convenient if you’re carrying towels, bags and everything else needed for a water park day.
  • Walking: Depending on where you’re staying in Salou, PortAventura World may be within walking distance, although remember you’ll have a full day in the park ahead of you.
  • Public transport: Local transport services connect the Salou area with PortAventura World.
  • Car: Useful if you already have a hire car, although we’d rarely hire one specifically for this journey.

If you’re staying at one of the PortAventura World hotels, getting to Caribe Aquatic Park is particularly straightforward.

Getting to Aquopolis Costa Dorada from Salou

Aquopolis Costa Dorada is in La Pineda, approximately 5 km from central Salou.

You can reach it by:

  • Taxi: Probably the simplest option for a family travelling from Salou.
  • Bus: Local buses connect Salou and La Pineda, making Aquopolis possible without a car.
  • Car: The drive from Salou is short, making this convenient if you already have a hire car.

If you’re staying in La Pineda itself, Aquopolis may even be within walking distance depending on the location of your hotel.

Do You Need a Hire Car?

Not specifically for the water parks.

If your holiday is centred around Salou, PortAventura World and La Pineda, you can comfortably visit both parks without hiring a car.

However, a car becomes much more useful if you’re planning to explore further along the Costa Dorada or take several independent day trips.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: For a family, always compare the total cost of bus fares with a taxi rather than automatically assuming public transport will be cheaper. For short journeys around Salou, the difference can sometimes be small enough that the convenience of a taxi wins.

What to Take to a Water Park in Salou

A little preparation can make a big difference to your water park day, particularly during the hottest summer months.

We’d recommend taking:

  • High-SPF waterproof sunscreen – you’ll spend much of the day outside, so remember to reapply regularly.
  • Swimwear – wear something comfortable and suitable for waterslides.
  • Towels – taking your own can save you from having to hire or buy them at the park.
  • Flip-flops or water shoes – pathways can become extremely hot in the Spanish sunshine.
  • Waterproof phone pouch – useful if you want to keep your phone with you without worrying about getting it wet.
  • Refillable water bottle – staying hydrated is especially important on hot days.
  • Dry clothes – particularly useful for the journey back to your hotel.
  • Small bag – keep what you carry around the park to a minimum and use a locker for valuables.

Can You Wear Water Shoes on the Slides?

Rules can vary between individual attractions, and you may be asked to remove footwear on certain slides.

Water shoes can still be extremely useful when walking around the park, particularly during July and August when outdoor surfaces can become very hot.

Do the Water Parks Have Lockers?

Yes, locker facilities are available, and we’d recommend using one for valuables rather than leaving phones, wallets or other important belongings unattended.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Take a photo of your locker number on your phone before heading off to the slides. It’s surprisingly easy to forget where you’ve put everything after several hours in the park!

Water park day essentials for families visiting Salou

Best Time to Visit the Water Parks in Salou

Both Caribe Aquatic Park and Aquopolis Costa Dorada are seasonal attractions, so opening dates and hours vary throughout the year.

The main water park season generally runs through the warmer months, making June to September the most obvious time to visit.

June

June is one of our favourite times for a Salou water park holiday.

The weather is usually warm enough to enjoy a full day in the water, while crowds can be more manageable than during the peak school holidays.

Best for: Warm weather + potentially smaller crowds.

July & August

This is peak water park season.

You’ll have the hottest weather, but you’ll also be visiting when Salou and the Costa Dorada are at their busiest.

If you’re visiting during July or August:

  • Arrive before or around opening time.
  • Head to the biggest slides first.
  • Take regular breaks from the sun.
  • Reapply waterproof sunscreen throughout the day.
  • Consider visiting on a weekday rather than a weekend where possible.

Best for: Hot weather and the full summer atmosphere.

September

September can be an excellent compromise, particularly earlier in the month.

Temperatures are still typically warm, but the main summer crowds begin to ease as schools return.

Best for: Families who can travel outside the main UK school holidays.

What Time Should You Arrive?

As early as possible.

Arriving around opening time gives you the best opportunity to experience the most popular slides before queues build.

We’d tackle your family’s must-do attractions first and leave pools, children’s areas and more relaxing attractions until later.

💡 Holiday Blueprint Tip: Always check the official park calendar for your exact holiday dates before buying tickets. Seasonal opening dates and daily hours can change from year to year.

Salou Water Parks FAQs

How Long Do You Need at Caribe Aquatic Park?

We’d allow most of the day. Although Caribe Aquatic Park can be combined with a wider PortAventura holiday, trying to squeeze the water park into just a couple of hours means you’ll miss much of what it offers.

During busy summer periods, queues for the most popular slides can also make a short visit difficult.

How Long Do You Need at Aquopolis Costa Dorada?

Plan for a full day if you want to experience the major slides, pools and family areas without rushing.

Aquopolis has plenty to keep families occupied, particularly if your group includes a mixture of thrill seekers and younger children.

Are There Height Restrictions on the Water Slides?

Yes. Both parks have minimum height requirements on certain attractions, particularly their larger and faster slides.

Restrictions vary by ride, so check the attraction information before promising younger children they’ll be able to ride something they’ve spotted online.

Do Caribe Aquatic Park and Aquopolis Have Lockers?

Yes. Locker facilities are available at both parks.

We’d use one for phones, wallets, travel documents and other valuables rather than leaving them unattended while everyone is in the water.

Are There Places to Eat Inside the Water Parks?

Yes. Both parks have food and drink options inside, so you can comfortably spend the day without needing to leave for lunch.

As you’d expect at a major tourist attraction, buying meals and drinks inside can add to the cost of your day, so factor this into your holiday budget.

Can You Take Your Own Food and Drink?

Rules regarding outside food, drinks and containers can change, so we’d recommend checking the park’s current conditions before your visit rather than assuming everything can be taken inside.

A refillable water bottle is still worth considering, particularly during the hottest months.

Are There Sunbeds at the Water Parks?

You’ll find areas where you can relax between attractions, but during peak summer periods the most convenient spots can be popular.

Another reason to arrive early is that you can get your bearings and organise yourselves before the park becomes busier.

Which Water Park Is Closest to Salou?

Caribe Aquatic Park is located at PortAventura World, immediately outside Salou, while Aquopolis Costa Dorada is in nearby La Pineda.

Both are easy to reach from Salou, so we’d choose based on which park suits your family rather than distance alone.

Can You Visit Both Water Parks During One Salou Holiday?

Absolutely.

If you’re staying for 10–14 nights and your family loves water parks, we’d happily include both.

For a shorter seven-night holiday, we’d usually choose one and leave enough time for PortAventura, the beach, your hotel pool and some proper downtime.

Our Verdict: Which Is the Best Water Park in Salou?

If we were choosing purely on the water park experience, our pick would be Aquopolis Costa Dorada.

It offers a great mixture of big thrill slides, family attractions and areas for younger children, making it an excellent choice if you want to dedicate an entire day of your Salou holiday to a water park.

However, Caribe Aquatic Park would be our choice for families already visiting PortAventura World. Being able to combine the water park with PortAventura Park and Ferrari Land makes it particularly convenient, and the tropical theming gives it a very different feel.

Ultimately, you can’t go far wrong with either. Choose Aquopolis for a dedicated water park day, choose Caribe for a PortAventura holiday — or, if you’re staying for 10–14 nights and your family loves water slides, make room for both!

PortAventura World for UK Families: Complete 2027 Guide

PortAventura World 2027 guide for UK families

Planning a trip to PortAventura World for UK families in 2027? This complete 2027 guide covers everything families need to know before visiting, from choosing the right parks and tickets to the best rides, hotels, queue strategies and how many days you’ll actually need.

Located on Spain’s Costa Dorada, close to Salou, PortAventura World is one of Europe’s biggest family theme park destinations. With PortAventura Park, Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park all in one resort, it can easily become the centrepiece of a Costa Dorada holiday.

But unlike a simple day at a theme park, there are quite a few decisions to make before you arrive. Should you visit for one, two or three days? Is Ferrari Land worth it? Do you need Express Passes? And is staying at a PortAventura hotel worth the extra cost?

We’ve put everything together in one place to help UK families plan smarter, avoid common mistakes and get more from their time at PortAventura World.

🎢 PortAventura World at a Glance

PortAventura World is made up of three separate parks, each offering a very different experience. Here’s the quick version before we get into the detail.

🎢 PortAventura Park

The main theme park and the one we’d consider essential. It’s home to the resort’s biggest selection of rides, themed areas, family attractions and shows.

🏎️ Ferrari Land

A smaller second theme park built around Ferrari, with Red Force as its headline attraction. It’s best combined with PortAventura Park rather than treated as a full-day park.

💦 Caribe Aquatic Park

PortAventura World’s water park, with slides, pools and family attractions. It’s particularly appealing during the hot Costa Dorada summer.

PortAventura World at a glance guide for UK families

🎯 Which PortAventura Park Should You Visit?

If you’re visiting PortAventura World for the first time, PortAventura Park should be your priority. It’s by far the largest of the three parks and has the widest mix of thrill rides, family attractions, children’s areas and shows.

Ferrari Land is much smaller and works best as an addition to a PortAventura Park day or as part of a multi-day ticket. Thrill-seekers will want to experience Red Force, while younger visitors will find a smaller selection of family attractions.

Caribe Aquatic Park is completely different. It’s a dedicated water park and makes a great extra day during the warmer months, particularly if you’re staying in Salou or at one of the PortAventura hotels.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Verdict

First visit: PortAventura Park is essential.
Thrill-seekers: PortAventura Park + Ferrari Land.
Hot summer holiday: Add Caribe Aquatic Park.
How long to allow: At least two days for PortAventura Park and Ferrari Land, plus an extra day if you want to visit Caribe Aquatic Park.

🎢 PortAventura Park – The Main Event

PortAventura Park is the heart of the resort and the park we’d recommend spending the most time in. It’s divided into six themed areas — Mediterrània, Polynesia, China, México, Far West and SésamoAventura — with everything from major roller coasters to gentle family rides and attractions for younger children.

For thrill-seekers, this is where you’ll find some of PortAventura World’s biggest rides, including Shambhala, Dragon Khan and Furius Baco. Families have plenty to choose from too, making this the park with the broadest appeal.

🎢 Best Thrill Rides at PortAventura Park

Shambhala – One of PortAventura’s standout roller coasters and an absolute must for thrill-seekers. The huge first drop, speed and airtime make this one we’d prioritise early in the day.

Dragon Khan – A PortAventura classic packed with inversions. It sits alongside Shambhala in the China area, making it easy to tackle both together.

Furius Baco – A high-speed launch coaster near the park entrance. It’s intense, fast and can build significant queues, so it’s another good candidate for early in the day.

Uncharted: The Enigma of Penitence – A heavily themed indoor coaster experience that’s very different from PortAventura’s traditional outdoor thrill rides. Because of its popularity, queue times can become substantial.

👨‍👩‍👧 Best Rides for Families

PortAventura isn’t only about huge roller coasters. Attractions such as Tutuki Splash, Grand Canyon Rapids and Street Mission give families plenty to enjoy together, while SésamoAventura is specifically designed with younger children in mind.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Tip

If the headline rides are important to your family, prioritise them early. Queue times can change considerably throughout the day, so avoid relying on one fixed touring plan and check the latest wait times when you visit.

🎢 PortAventura Park Ride Guide

With so many attractions across PortAventura Park, it helps to know which rides should be highest on your family’s list. Here’s our quick guide to some of the park’s biggest attractions.

PortAventura Park must-ride guide for UK families

🏎️ Is Ferrari Land Worth Visiting?

Ferrari Land is much smaller than PortAventura Park, so we wouldn’t plan an entire day around it. However, it’s definitely worth considering as part of a multi-park ticket — particularly if you have older children or thrill-seekers in the family.

The headline attraction is Red Force, a launched roller coaster that accelerates from 0 to 180 km/h in around five seconds and climbs to a height of 112 metres. It’s the ride that makes Ferrari Land particularly appealing to serious coaster fans.

But Ferrari Land isn’t only about Red Force. There are family attractions, racing-themed experiences and rides for younger visitors, although the overall selection is considerably smaller than at PortAventura Park.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Verdict

Worth it for thrill-seekers? Yes — Red Force alone makes it worth experiencing.

Worth a full day? No. We’d combine Ferrari Land with PortAventura Park rather than dedicate an entire day to it.

Best for: Families with older children, teenagers, coaster fans and anyone interested in Ferrari.

Our recommendation: If your ticket includes Ferrari Land, absolutely visit it. If you’re choosing between Ferrari Land and an additional full day at PortAventura Park, we’d prioritise PortAventura Park for most families.

🏎️ Best Rides at Ferrari Land

Ferrari Land has fewer attractions than PortAventura Park, but there are still several worth prioritising. For most thrill-seekers, Red Force is the main event, while families can enjoy a mix of racing-themed rides and interactive attractions.

🔴 Red Force

The undisputed headline attraction. Red Force launches riders from 0 to 180 km/h in around five seconds before climbing its enormous 112-metre tower. If you love roller coasters, this should be at the top of your Ferrari Land list.

🏁 Maranello Grand Race

A Ferrari-themed driving attraction where families can take control of their own car around a race-inspired circuit. It’s a much gentler experience than Red Force and gives Ferrari Land broader family appeal.

🗼 Thrill Towers

Two drop-tower-style attractions offering very different sensations from the roller coasters. A good choice for anyone looking for another adrenaline hit after Red Force.

🏎️ Racing Legends & Flying Dreams

These simulator-style attractions lean more heavily into the Ferrari theme and provide something different from the outdoor rides.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Tip

Check height restrictions before promising children particular rides. Red Force and some of Ferrari Land’s thrill attractions have minimum height requirements, so checking the latest restrictions before your visit can avoid disappointment.

💦 Is Caribe Aquatic Park Worth Adding?

Caribe Aquatic Park is PortAventura World’s dedicated water park and can be a brilliant addition to a Costa Dorada holiday, especially during the hotter summer months.

It’s a separate park from PortAventura Park and Ferrari Land, with water slides, pools, splash areas and attractions aimed at different ages. Rather than trying to squeeze it into a theme park day, we’d treat Caribe Aquatic Park as a separate water-park day.

For families staying in Salou for a week or longer, it can also provide a welcome change of pace between busy theme park days.

🌊 Who Is It Best For?

Families with younger children: There are gentler pools, splash areas and smaller slides alongside the bigger attractions.

Older children and teenagers: The larger slides provide considerably more excitement.

Summer visitors: This is when we’d be most tempted to add it, particularly during very hot weather.

Short trips: If you only have one or two days at PortAventura World, we’d prioritise PortAventura Park and Ferrari Land unless a water park is particularly important to your family.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Verdict

Worth adding? Yes, particularly on a longer Costa Dorada holiday.

How long to allow: Give it its own day rather than trying to combine all three parks.

Our recommendation: For a typical week-long Salou family holiday, we’d consider two days for PortAventura Park/Ferrari Land + one separate Caribe Aquatic Park day an excellent combination.

🎟️ PortAventura Tickets – Which Ticket Should You Buy?

Choosing the right PortAventura World ticket depends mainly on how many days you have and which parks your family actually wants to visit.

For most UK families staying in Salou for a week, we wouldn’t try to cram PortAventura Park, Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park into a single day. You’ll get far more from the resort by allowing enough time to enjoy each park without constantly watching the clock.

🎢 One-Day Tickets

A one-day ticket makes most sense if you’re short on time and primarily want to experience PortAventura Park.

If this is your first visit, we’d concentrate on the main park rather than trying to see everything across the resort.

🎢🏎️ Multi-Day & Multi-Park Tickets

For most families, this is where we’d start looking.

Having multiple days gives you time to explore PortAventura Park properly, revisit favourite attractions and include Ferrari Land without sacrificing a large part of your main park day.

If the price difference is reasonable for your dates, the extra flexibility can be well worth it.

💦 Tickets Including Caribe Aquatic Park

Consider these if you’re visiting during the warmer months and genuinely want a dedicated water-park day.

Don’t automatically pay extra for access to all three parks simply because it’s available. If your family isn’t particularly interested in water parks, put that money towards something you’ll actually use.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Recommendation

1 day available: Prioritise PortAventura Park.

2 days available: PortAventura Park + Ferrari Land is our preferred combination.

3 days available: Add Caribe Aquatic Park and give it a separate day.

Longer stay: Look carefully at multi-day ticket pricing — the additional days can sometimes offer much better value than buying separate visits.

⚡ Are PortAventura Express Passes Worth It?

PortAventura’s most popular attractions can develop long queues, particularly during weekends, school holidays and the busiest summer months. An Express option can therefore be tempting — but we wouldn’t automatically buy one for every visit.

Whether it’s worth the extra cost depends on when you’re visiting, which rides matter most to your family and how much time you have in the parks.

👍 When We’d Consider Express

You’re visiting during peak season: July, August and busy school-holiday periods can bring much larger crowds.

You only have one day: If this is your only opportunity to experience PortAventura Park, reducing time spent queuing can become much more valuable.

Your family loves the headline rides: If attractions such as Shambhala and other major thrill rides are the main reason you’re visiting, Express access may help you achieve considerably more.

You hate queues: Sometimes convenience itself is worth paying for — particularly with children.

👎 When We’d Probably Skip It

You have multiple park days: Two days gives you much more flexibility to catch attractions at different times.

You’re visiting on a quieter date: Paying extra before knowing whether queues justify it could be unnecessary.

Your family mainly wants gentler attractions: Express access may offer less value depending on your ride priorities.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Tip

We wouldn’t automatically buy Express before the holiday. Check exactly what your ticket or hotel package includes, which attractions are covered by the current Express options and the expected crowd levels for your visit before deciding.

If you’re staying at a PortAventura World hotel, also check the current hotel benefits before purchasing anything separately — packages and included perks can change.

🏨 Is It Worth Staying at a PortAventura Hotel?

You don’t have to stay at a PortAventura World hotel to enjoy the parks. Salou has a huge choice of accommodation nearby, and staying in the resort can often give families more flexibility for restaurants, beaches and evenings away from the theme parks.

However, an official PortAventura hotel can make a lot of sense if the parks are the main focus of your holiday.

👍 Why We’d Consider Staying On-Site

Convenience: Being close to the parks makes early starts and tired evenings considerably easier, particularly with children.

Park packages: Official hotel packages may include park admission or other benefits, so compare the total holiday cost rather than looking only at the room price.

Theme park atmosphere: If PortAventura is the highlight of the trip, staying within the resort can make the experience feel more special.

Less travelling: You won’t need to organise transport between your Salou hotel and the parks each day.

👎 Why We’d Stay in Salou Instead

More choice: Salou has everything from budget apartments to larger family resorts.

Beach access: Staying closer to the coast makes it easier to combine theme-park days with a proper Mediterranean holiday.

Restaurants and evenings: You’ll have a wider choice away from the theme-park resort.

Longer holidays: For a 7–10 night Costa Dorada holiday, we’d usually prefer Salou unless PortAventura is the main purpose of the trip.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Verdict

For a short PortAventura-focused break, we’d seriously consider staying at an official resort hotel.

For a week-long family holiday, we’d generally prefer staying in Salou and travelling to PortAventura — giving you the best combination of theme parks + beach holiday.

🚗 How to Get to PortAventura World

PortAventura World is very easy to reach from Salou and the surrounding Costa Dorada resorts. The best option depends on where you’re staying and whether you’ve hired a car.

🚕 From Salou

PortAventura World is only a short distance from central Salou. For families, a taxi is often the simplest option, particularly when travelling with younger children or returning after a long day in the parks.

Depending on where you’re staying, walking may also be possible, but remember that you’ll already be doing plenty of walking once you’re inside the parks.

🚗 By Car

Driving gives you the most flexibility, particularly if you’re staying elsewhere on the Costa Dorada or planning to combine PortAventura with other day trips.

If you’re hiring a car for your holiday, check the latest parking charges and opening arrangements directly with PortAventura World before travelling.

Planning to explore more of the Costa Dorada? You can compare car hire prices before travelling to see whether hiring a car makes sense for your trip.

🚆 By Train

Rail can also be useful depending on where you’re travelling from, particularly from other parts of the Costa Dorada or Barcelona. Check current routes and timetables for your travel dates, as services and station arrangements can change.

✈️ From Barcelona Airport

If you’re flying into Barcelona and travelling directly towards Salou or PortAventura, your main options are private transfer, public transport or car hire.

For families carrying luggage, a pre-booked private transfer can be the easiest door-to-door option.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Tip

Don’t choose your airport purely on the cheapest flight price. Compare the total cost of flights, luggage and onward transport to your accommodation before booking.

☀️ Best Time to Visit PortAventura World

Best time to visit PortAventura World for UK families

🍔 Food & Drink at PortAventura World

You’ll find plenty of places to eat throughout PortAventura World, ranging from quick-service snacks and fast food to themed restaurants and sit-down meals.

Food inside a major theme park is rarely the cheapest part of the day, so it’s worth thinking about when you plan your budget — particularly if you’re visiting as a family for several days.

🍽️ Where to Eat

Each themed area of PortAventura Park has different food options, so we wouldn’t necessarily walk across the park just to reach one particular restaurant. Instead, check what’s nearby when you’re ready to eat and use the opportunity to take a break from the rides.

Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park also have their own food and drink options.

💷 Budget Tip

Check PortAventura World’s current rules on bringing food and drinks into the parks before your visit, as policies can change.

We’d also budget for drinks, snacks and meals before the holiday rather than treating them as an afterthought — over several park days, they can become a noticeable part of the overall cost.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Tip

Try eating slightly earlier or later than the traditional lunchtime rush. Apart from potentially avoiding the busiest restaurant periods, it can leave you free to target rides while other visitors are eating.

👨‍👩‍👧 PortAventura With Children – Family Tips

PortAventura World works well for families with children of different ages, but it’s worth doing a little planning before you arrive. The biggest roller coasters have height restrictions, while younger children have dedicated attractions and areas designed specifically for them.

📏 Check Height Restrictions Before You Go

If your children are excited about particular rides, check the latest official height restrictions before your holiday.

This is especially important for the major thrill rides. Knowing in advance which attractions everyone can ride can save disappointment once you’re inside the park.

🧸 Visiting With Younger Children

SésamoAventura should be high on your list. This colourful Sesame Street-themed area is designed around younger visitors and offers a very different experience from PortAventura’s major roller coasters.

Don’t assume younger children won’t enjoy the rest of PortAventura Park either. There are family attractions, shows and gentler experiences throughout the park.

🎢 Visiting With Older Children & Teenagers

This is where PortAventura really comes into its own.

Families with confident older children and teenagers can have an excellent time tackling attractions such as Shambhala, Dragon Khan and Uncharted, with Ferrari Land adding Red Force for serious thrill-seekers.

👨‍👩‍👧 Different Ages in the Same Family?

Don’t try to keep everyone together for every single attraction.

If one person wants the biggest coasters while someone else prefers gentler rides, occasionally splitting up can make the day much more enjoyable. Agree somewhere to meet afterwards and let everyone experience the attractions they’re actually interested in.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Tip

Before your trip, let everyone choose two or three “must-do” attractions. Prioritise those first, then treat everything else as a bonus.

That simple approach can make a busy theme-park day much less stressful.

💡 PortAventura World Tips – Before You Go

🎟️ Buy tickets in advance
Don’t leave ticket planning until you arrive. Compare the different park combinations beforehand so you know exactly what’s included.

⏰ Arrive early
Being ready for the start of the park day can give you valuable time before queues build.

📱 Use the official PortAventura app
Use it during your visit for current park information and to help plan your day rather than relying entirely on a fixed itinerary.

👟 Wear comfortable shoes
You’ll cover a surprising amount of ground, especially during a full day at PortAventura Park.

☀️ Prepare for the heat
During summer, sunscreen, hats and regular drink breaks are essential. Don’t underestimate how tiring a hot park day can become.

📏 Check ride restrictions beforehand
Especially with children, check the latest height restrictions for your family’s must-do attractions before travelling.

🎢 Prioritise, don’t chase everything
Trying to complete every attraction can turn the day into a race. Pick everyone’s must-dos first and enjoy everything else as a bonus.

📅 Check the official calendar
Opening days, hours, shows and seasonal events can vary. Check the latest information shortly before your visit.

⭐ Our Biggest Tip

Don’t over-plan every hour. Have a shortlist of priorities, arrive with a rough strategy, then adapt to the queues and conditions on the day.

❓ PortAventura World FAQ

Is PortAventura World suitable for young children?

Yes. Although PortAventura is famous for its roller coasters, there are plenty of attractions for younger children. SésamoAventura is specifically aimed at younger visitors, with additional family-friendly rides and shows throughout the main park.

Is Ferrari Land included with PortAventura Park?

Ticket combinations vary, so don’t assume Ferrari Land is automatically included with every PortAventura Park ticket. Check exactly which parks are included when booking.

Can you do PortAventura Park and Ferrari Land in one day?

It’s possible, but we’d only recommend it if you’re short on time. For most families, having two days gives you a much more relaxed experience and more opportunity to enjoy PortAventura Park properly.

Is PortAventura World good for teenagers?

Absolutely. In fact, we’d rate PortAventura particularly highly for families with thrill-seeking older children and teenagers thanks to rides including Shambhala, Dragon Khan, Uncharted and Red Force.

How far is PortAventura World from Salou?

PortAventura World is very close to Salou, making it easy to combine the theme parks with a beach holiday. Your exact journey time will depend on where you’re staying and whether you’re travelling by taxi, car, public transport or walking.

⭐ Is PortAventura World Worth It for UK Families?

For families who enjoy theme parks, PortAventura World is one of the strongest reasons to consider the Costa Dorada for a European holiday.

You get major roller coasters and heavily themed attractions without needing to travel as far as Florida, while Salou’s beaches, restaurants and Mediterranean climate mean the holiday doesn’t have to revolve entirely around theme parks.

For families with younger children, there’s still plenty to enjoy, but we think PortAventura really shines for families with older children and teenagers, particularly those who love thrill rides.

🏆 Holiday Blueprint Verdict

Best for: Families, older children, teenagers and thrill-seekers
Don’t miss: PortAventura Park
Worth adding: Ferrari Land, particularly for Red Force
Summer extra: Caribe Aquatic Park
Ideal holiday: Combine PortAventura with several days enjoying Salou and the wider Costa Dorada

Would we build a Costa Dorada family holiday around PortAventura World? Absolutely — but we’d make it part of the holiday rather than the whole holiday.

Still deciding where to stay? Our Salou vs Cambrils vs La Pineda comparison explains which resort is best for beaches, PortAventura, younger children, teenagers, restaurants and relaxed family holidays.

Another major advantage for UK families is convenience. The flight is much shorter than travelling to Florida, there’s no significant jet lag, and you can comfortably enjoy the area on a one-week holiday.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Opinion

Salou Costa Dorada is one of the best European destinations for families who want more than a traditional beach holiday. If your children or teenagers love rides, water parks and days out, you’ll struggle to get bored here.

Best Time to Visit Salou & Costa Dorada

For most UK families, the best time to visit Salou Costa Dorada is between May and September, when the weather is warm, the resort is lively and the major attractions are operating at their fullest.

However, the best month for your family depends on whether you prioritise hot weather, lower prices or smaller crowds.

🌸 May & May Half-Term

May can be a great choice for families who want pleasant weather without peak-summer crowds. Daytime temperatures are generally comfortable for sightseeing and theme parks, although the sea and outdoor pools can still feel cool.

Best for: PortAventura, sightseeing and avoiding peak-season crowds.

☀️ June

June is one of our favourite times to visit. The weather is usually warm, the days are long and Salou is fully coming to life, but you’re still ahead of the busiest UK school-holiday period.

Best for: A good balance of weather, crowds and price.

🔥 July & August

This is peak season. Expect the hottest weather, busiest beaches and largest crowds at PortAventura World.

For families tied to the UK summer holidays, it’s still a fantastic time to visit — just plan theme-park days carefully, book popular attractions in advance and be prepared for the heat during the middle of the day.

Best for: Guaranteed summer atmosphere, beaches and water parks.

🍂 September

September can be an excellent option if you’re able to travel outside UK school holidays. Temperatures remain warm, while crowds generally begin to ease as the month progresses.

Best for: Couples and families who aren’t restricted to school dates.

🎃 October & October Half-Term

October is much less predictable for a traditional beach holiday, but it can still be very appealing for PortAventura World, particularly with its seasonal Halloween events.

Expect milder temperatures and a greater chance of unsettled weather than during summer, so we’d choose October primarily for theme parks and exploring rather than guaranteed pool-and-beach weather.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Pick

For families restricted to UK school holidays, we’d look particularly closely at May half-term for lower crowds or the summer holidays for the complete beach-and-water-park experience.

If you have flexibility, June is arguably the sweet spot.

Getting to Salou & Costa Dorada from the UK

Getting to Salou from the UK is relatively straightforward, with Reus Airport and Barcelona-El Prat Airport being the two main options for most families.

✈️ Reus Airport – The Easiest Option

If you can find suitable flights, Reus Airport is our first choice for a Salou holiday.

It’s the closest airport to Salou, so transfers are much shorter than travelling from Barcelona. This is particularly useful when travelling with children or arriving on a late flight.

The downside is that flights to Reus can be more seasonal and there may be fewer choices from your preferred UK airport.

Holiday Blueprint verdict: ⭐ Choose Reus when the flight times and prices make sense.

✈️ Barcelona-El Prat Airport – More Flight Choice

Barcelona Airport is much further from Salou, but it normally gives UK travellers a much wider choice of flights, airlines and departure airports.

The journey to Salou takes longer, so remember to compare the total cost of the trip, rather than choosing a Barcelona flight simply because the airfare is cheaper.

Barcelona can also be a great option if you want to combine your Costa Dorada holiday with a night or two in Barcelona.

Holiday Blueprint verdict: ⭐ Best for flight choice or a Barcelona + Salou split trip.

🚕 How Do You Get from the Airport to Salou?

Families generally have four options:

  • Private transfer – easiest door-to-door option, particularly with luggage and children.
  • Shared shuttle – usually cheaper, but expect additional stops.
  • Public transport – potentially the cheapest option, but less convenient with lots of luggage.
  • Car hire – worth considering if you’re planning to explore Tarragona, Barcelona or more of the Costa Dorada.

Want the easiest option? Compare pre-booked airport transfers from Barcelona or Reus Airport to Salou before you travel, so your journey is arranged before you arrive.

Don’t automatically book the cheapest flight. Compare the flight + luggage + airport transfer together. A slightly more expensive flight into Reus can sometimes produce an easier and better-value journey overall.

Where to Stay in Salou & Costa Dorada 🏨

hoosing the right base can completely change your Costa Dorada holiday. For most UK families, we’d narrow the choice down to Salou, PortAventura World, Cambrils or La Pineda.

🏖️ Salou – Best All-Round Choice

For a first family holiday, Salou would be our overall pick.

You’ll have beaches, restaurants, shops and plenty happening in the evenings, while still being extremely close to PortAventura World.

There’s also a huge range of accommodation, from budget apartments to larger family-friendly hotels with pools and entertainment.

Best for: Families who want the easiest mix of beach + theme parks + restaurants + nightlife.

🎢 PortAventura World Hotels – Best for Theme Park Fans

If PortAventura is the main reason for your holiday, staying at one of the resort’s own hotels can be very appealing.

You’ll be right beside the parks and some hotel packages include park admission, so it’s worth comparing the complete hotel + ticket price rather than looking at the room rate alone.

The trade-off is that you won’t have the same traditional beach-resort atmosphere immediately outside your hotel.

Best for: Families planning several days at PortAventura World.

🌴 Cambrils – Best for a More Relaxed Holiday

Cambrils has a more relaxed feel than central Salou, with an attractive waterfront, beaches and plenty of places to eat.

It’s a good option if the adults want more of a traditional Mediterranean holiday while the children still want easy access to PortAventura and the surrounding attractions.

Best for: Beach-focused families wanting somewhere slightly quieter.

💦 La Pineda – Best for Beach + Water Park

La Pineda is another family-friendly option with a long beach and Aquopolis Costa Dorada nearby.

It’s generally quieter than Salou but still close enough to reach PortAventura without turning it into a major journey.

Best for: Families who prioritise beaches, pools and water parks.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Pick

For most first-time UK families, we’d stay in Salou.

It gives you the best balance and means you aren’t committing the entire holiday to either the beach or PortAventura.

💰 Compare Salou & Costa Dorada Hotel Prices

Hotel prices can vary considerably between Salou, PortAventura, Cambrils and La Pineda, so compare accommodation across the area before deciding where to stay.

PortAventura World – The Star Attraction 🎢

For many families, PortAventura World is the biggest reason to choose Salou and the Costa Dorada over a traditional Spanish beach resort.

If you’re also considering Florida, see our [Disney vs Universal guide] to compare two of Orlando’s biggest theme park options.

Located just outside Salou, the resort combines three separate parks — PortAventura Park, Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park — making it possible to build several completely different days into one holiday.

🎢 PortAventura Park

This is the main theme park and the one we’d prioritise if you only have time for one.

The park is divided into themed areas including Mediterrània, Polynesia, China, México, Far West and SésamoAventura, with everything from children’s attractions and family rides to major roller coasters.

Thrill-seekers will find rides including Shambhala, Dragon Khan and Furius Baco, while younger children have plenty to do too.

🏎️ Ferrari Land

Ferrari Land is a separate park themed around the famous Italian car brand.

Its headline attraction is Red Force, an accelerator coaster that reaches around 180 km/h, making it one of the standout thrill rides in Europe.

Ferrari Land is smaller than PortAventura Park, so we’d normally combine it with another park rather than dedicate an entire holiday day to it.

💦 Caribe Aquatic Park

For a break from roller coasters, Caribe Aquatic Park gives families a full water-park experience with slides, pools, children’s areas and more relaxing attractions.

During the hottest summer months, we’d seriously consider including a water-park day rather than trying to spend every day walking around theme parks in the heat.

⭐ How Many Days Do You Need at PortAventura?

For most families, we’d allow at least two days for PortAventura World.

If theme parks are one of the main reasons you’re visiting — particularly with older children or teenagers — three days across the resort can easily make sense.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Tip

Don’t try to cram PortAventura Park and Ferrari Land into a rushed half-day simply to tick them off. Build some breathing room into your itinerary, especially during busy school-holiday periods.

Best Beaches in Salou & Costa Dorada 🏖️

One of the biggest advantages Salou has over many theme-park destinations is that you can spend the morning riding roller coasters and the afternoon relaxing on a Mediterranean beach.

Salou has everything from long, family-friendly stretches of sand to smaller coves around Cap Salou. For a full comparison, see our guide to the best beaches in Salou for families.

🏖️ Llevant Beach – Best All-Round Beach

Llevant Beach (Platja de Llevant) is Salou’s main beach and the easiest choice for most families staying in the centre of the resort.

It’s a long, sandy beach backed by the promenade, with restaurants, shops and facilities nearby.

Best for: Families wanting everything within easy reach.

🌴 Ponent Beach – Good for Families

At the western end of Salou you’ll find Ponent Beach, another long stretch of sand that continues towards neighbouring Cambrils.

It can be a good alternative if you’re staying towards this side of Salou or want a change from Llevant.

Best for: Relaxed family beach days.

🌊 Capellans Beach – Smaller & More Sheltered

Capellans Beach is considerably smaller than Salou’s main beaches and has a more enclosed feel.

It’s worth knowing about if you want somewhere different without travelling far outside Salou.

Best for: A shorter beach visit rather than necessarily an entire day.

🌅 Beaches Beyond Salou

If you’re prepared to explore, the wider Costa Dorada gives you plenty more coastline.

Cambrils is particularly worth considering for a beach day combined with lunch or dinner around the town, while La Pineda has another large sandy beach and works particularly well for families combining the beach with Aquopolis Costa Dorada.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Tip

Don’t schedule every single day before you travel.

Keeping one flexible beach or pool day in your itinerary gives everyone a chance to recover after several days of theme parks and sightseeing — especially during the hotter summer months.

Best Water Parks in Salou & Costa Dorada 💦

If you’re visiting during the warmer months, a water-park day is a great way to break up several days of sightseeing and theme parks. The two main choices for families staying around Salou are Caribe Aquatic Park and Aquopolis Costa Dorada.

🌴 Caribe Aquatic Park – Best for PortAventura Fans

Part of PortAventura World, Caribe Aquatic Park is the obvious choice if PortAventura is already a major part of your holiday.

The Caribbean-themed park has a mixture of thrill slides, family attractions, children’s areas and pools, making it suitable for different ages.

Its biggest advantage is convenience — particularly if you’re staying at a PortAventura hotel or buying a multi-park ticket that includes the water park.

Best for: Families building their holiday around PortAventura World.

💦 Aquopolis Costa Dorada – Best Alternative Water Park

Located in La Pineda, Aquopolis gives you a completely separate water-park day away from PortAventura World.

There’s a mixture of faster slides, family attractions and areas for younger children, and its location means you can potentially combine part of the day with La Pineda’s beach.

Best for: Families staying in Salou or La Pineda who want another major water park.

🏆 Caribe Aquatic Park vs Aquopolis – Which Would We Choose?

If you’re already spending several days at PortAventura World, we’d probably choose Caribe Aquatic Park because it fits naturally into the same part of the holiday.

However, if you’re only visiting PortAventura Park for a day or two — or want more variety — Aquopolis is a very worthwhile alternative.

And for a 7–10 night summer holiday with children who absolutely love water parks?

There’s nothing wrong with doing both. 😎

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Pick

Caribe Aquatic Park for the complete PortAventura experience. Aquopolis for variety.

Things to Do Beyond the Theme Parks 🌍

One of the reasons we like the Salou Costa Dorada area for a longer family holiday is that PortAventura doesn’t have to dominate every day. There are some excellent places to explore when everyone needs a break from rides and water slides.

🏛️ Tarragona – Best for History & Sightseeing

Around a short journey from Salou, Tarragona is one of the easiest day trips to add to your holiday.

The city is particularly famous for its Roman heritage, including the impressive amphitheatre overlooking the Mediterranean. Its Roman archaeological ensemble is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Combine the historic sights with wandering through the old town, stopping for lunch and enjoying the seafront.

Best for: A slower sightseeing day between theme-park visits.

⚓ Cambrils – Best for an Evening Out

Neighbouring Cambrils is particularly good when you want a change from Salou without committing to a full day trip.

Its waterfront and restaurant scene make it an easy place to visit for an afternoon followed by dinner.

Best for: A relaxed afternoon or evening away from central Salou.

🏙️ Barcelona – Best Big Day Trip

Barcelona opens up a completely different type of day.

Families can explore famous sights such as Sagrada Família, Park Güell and the city’s historic centre, although we’d avoid trying to cram everything into a single visit.

If Barcelona is high on your wish list, we’d seriously consider spending one or two nights there at the beginning or end of your Costa Dorada holiday rather than repeatedly travelling back and forth.

Best for: Families wanting to combine a beach and theme-park holiday with one of Europe’s great city breaks.

🚶 Salou Itself

Don’t overlook Salou while planning all your excursions.

Allow some time simply to explore the promenade, eat out, wander around in the evening and enjoy the resort rather than treating it purely as somewhere to sleep between attraction days.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Tip

For a 7-night holiday, we’d probably choose one major day trip. For 10–14 nights, you have enough time to explore more of the Costa Dorada without making the holiday feel rushed.

Getting Around Salou & Costa Dorada 🚗

One of the good things about staying in Salou is that you don’t necessarily need to hire a car.

If your holiday mainly consists of Salou’s beaches, PortAventura World and the surrounding resort areas, you can comfortably manage using a mixture of walking, local buses, taxis and transfers.

🚶 Getting Around Salou

Central Salou is relatively easy to explore on foot, particularly if you’re staying close to the beach and main tourist areas.

For journeys further along the coast, local public transport connects Salou with places including Cambrils, La Pineda and Tarragona, so hiring a car purely for getting around the immediate area isn’t essential.

🎢 Getting to PortAventura World

PortAventura World is extremely close to Salou, which is one of the destination’s biggest advantages.

Depending on where you’re staying, you may be able to walk, use public transport or take a short taxi journey rather than worrying about driving and parking every day.

🚗 When Is Car Hire Worth It?

A hire car starts to make more sense if you’re planning to explore beyond the main Salou resort area.

Families wanting to discover quieter beaches, smaller towns or more of Catalonia may appreciate having the freedom of their own vehicle.

Planning to explore beyond Salou? If you’re considering hiring a car, compare prices and what’s included before booking — particularly if you’re collecting from Reus or Barcelona Airport.

It’s also worth comparing car hire with the combined cost of airport transfers, taxis and excursions — particularly on a longer 10–14 night holiday.

❌ When We’d Skip the Car

If you’re staying centrally in Salou for seven nights and your plans mainly involve:

PortAventura + beach + water park + one organised excursion

we’d probably skip the hire car.

There’s little point paying for a vehicle to sit outside your hotel for most of the week.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Verdict

Car hire is useful in Costa Dorada, but definitely not essential.

Decide what you actually want to do first — then choose your transport rather than automatically adding a rental car to the holiday.

How Long Do You Need in Salou & Costa Dorada? 📅

For most UK families, 7 nights is enough to enjoy the highlights of Salou and the Costa Dorada without feeling as though you’re constantly rushing from one attraction to another.

Unlike Orlando, where two weeks can disappear remarkably quickly, the attractions around Salou are much closer together. That makes it easier to combine theme parks, beaches, water parks and sightseeing in a relatively short holiday.

7 Nights – Our Pick for Most Families

A week gives you enough time for:

  • 2 days at PortAventura World
  • 1 water-park day
  • 1 beach or pool day
  • 1 day trip or sightseeing day
  • Plenty of time to enjoy Salou itself

This would be our starting point for a first Costa Dorada holiday.

☀️ 10 Nights – The Sweet Spot

If the budget allows, 10 nights gives the holiday a noticeably more relaxed pace.

You can add another PortAventura day, visit both major water parks, spend more time at the beach and explore somewhere such as Tarragona or Cambrils without sacrificing your downtime.

For families who like busy holidays but don’t want to come home needing another holiday, 10 nights could be the sweet spot.

🌍 14 Nights – Best for Exploring

Two weeks makes more sense if you plan to explore beyond Salou.

You could combine Costa Dorada with Barcelona, hire a car for part of the holiday, discover more of Catalonia and still have plenty of completely unplanned pool and beach days.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Verdict

7 nights: Plenty for the main highlights.
10 nights: Our favourite balance.
14 nights: Best if Costa Dorada forms part of a wider Catalonia holiday.

Our 7-Day Salou & Costa Dorada Family Itinerary ☀️

If we were planning a first Salou and Costa Dorada holiday for a UK family, this is how we’d spend seven days. It combines the area’s biggest attractions with enough downtime to actually feel like you’re on holiday.

Day 1 – Arrive & Explore Salou 🏖️

Check into your hotel, unpack and keep the first day easy.

Head down to the seafront, explore the promenade and find somewhere for dinner. If you’ve arrived early enough, spend a couple of hours at Llevant Beach or around the hotel pool.

Holiday Blueprint plan: Don’t waste your first evening rushing to an attraction — save your energy for tomorrow.

Day 2 – PortAventura Park 🎢

Make your first full day the main PortAventura Park day.

Arrive early and concentrate on the attractions your family most wants to experience before queues build. Thrill-seekers will probably have Shambhala, Dragon Khan and Furius Baco high on their list, while families with younger children can spend more time exploring the gentler attractions and SésamoAventura.

Don’t make the mistake of treating PortAventura as somewhere you need to race around ticking off rides. Give yourself time to explore the different themed areas, stop for food and enjoy the atmosphere.

If everyone still has energy, stay into the evening — but remember we’ve deliberately given PortAventura another day later in the itinerary, so you don’t need to conquer everything today.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Tip: Choose your family’s three must-do attractions before you arrive and prioritise those. Anything else is a bonus.

Day 3 – Beach, Pool & Salou 🏖️

After yesterday’s full theme-park day, slow things down and enjoy the other side of a Costa Dorada holiday.

Spend the morning at Llevant Beach, relax around your hotel pool or split the day between both. This is deliberately a lighter day — particularly important if you’re visiting during July or August when the heat can make consecutive full park days exhausting.

Later in the afternoon, explore more of Salou, wander along the promenade and stop somewhere for a drink or ice cream.

Keep the evening free for a relaxed family meal. There’s no need for an early night unless you want one, because tomorrow’s water-park day can be approached at a much easier pace than PortAventura.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t feel guilty about having a proper beach or pool day. You’ve paid to come to the Mediterranean — make sure you actually enjoy it!

Day 4 – Caribe Aquatic Park 💦

After a slower Day 3, it’s time to turn the energy back up with a day at Caribe Aquatic Park.

Because it’s part of PortAventura World, Caribe Aquatic Park fits naturally into this itinerary and gives you a completely different experience from the main theme park. Expect a mixture of faster water slides, family attractions, pools and areas designed for younger children.

During the hotter summer months, a water-park day can also provide a welcome change from spending another full day walking around a theme park.

You don’t necessarily need to stay from opening until closing. If everyone has had enough by late afternoon, head back to Salou, shower and enjoy a relaxed evening around the resort.

If Aquopolis Costa Dorada appeals to your family more, simply swap it in for this day — there’s no need to squeeze both water parks into a seven-night holiday.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Tip: Water parks can be surprisingly tiring. Keep the evening easy because tomorrow we’re heading back to PortAventura World.

Day 5 – PortAventura Park + Ferrari Land 🏎️🎢

Today gives you a second chance to enjoy PortAventura World without the pressure of trying to fit everything into your first visit.

Start back at PortAventura Park and concentrate on anything you missed on Day 2. You can also revisit the attractions your family loved most — one of the advantages of allowing two PortAventura days rather than trying to cram the entire park into one.

Later, head into Ferrari Land. It’s considerably smaller than PortAventura Park, which is why we prefer combining the two rather than allocating Ferrari Land an entire day.

For thrill-seekers, the headline attraction is Red Force, which accelerates from 0 to 180 km/h in around five seconds and reaches a height of 112 metres.

Don’t feel you need to stay until the very end if you’ve achieved everything you wanted. You’ve already had a busy few days, and tomorrow we’re deliberately leaving Salou for a change of scenery.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Tip: Use your second PortAventura visit for favourites as well as missed attractions. Holidays shouldn’t become a checklist — if everyone wants another go on the same ride, do it!

Day 6 – Tarragona & Cambrils 🏛️

Today, take a break from theme parks and beaches and explore a little more of the Costa Dorada.

Start with Tarragona, a historic city famous for its Roman heritage. The Roman archaeological ensemble of Tarraco is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the amphitheatre overlooking the Mediterranean is one of the city’s most recognisable sights.

Spend the morning exploring the historic centre and waterfront, then stop for lunch before heading back towards Salou.

Later in the afternoon or early evening, continue to Cambrils. Its waterfront and relaxed atmosphere make it a lovely place for a stroll followed by dinner, giving you a completely different evening from central Salou.

Don’t try to pack too much sightseeing into the day. The point is to experience another side of the Costa Dorada rather than race between landmarks.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Tip: If your children have absolutely no interest in sightseeing, don’t force this day! Swap Tarragona for another beach or pool day and simply visit Cambrils for dinner in the evening.

Day 7 – Flex Day & Final Evening ☀️

Keep your final full day completely flexible.

By this point, your family will know what they’ve enjoyed most. You might want another few hours at PortAventura, spend the day on the beach, relax around the hotel pool or visit Aquopolis Costa Dorada if everyone still has enough energy for another water park.

Alternatively, use the day for some last-minute shopping, return to Cambrils, explore more of Salou or simply do very little.

That’s exactly why we like keeping the final day open. If bad weather or tiredness disrupted something earlier in the week, you’ve also got an opportunity to move those plans here.

For your final evening, head somewhere your family particularly enjoyed during the holiday and finish with a relaxed meal rather than trying to squeeze in one last major attraction.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Tip: Don’t plan Day 7 before you travel. Leave it genuinely flexible and decide once you’re there — sometimes the best holiday day is the one you didn’t organise months in advance.

7-day Salou Costa Dorada family itinerary including PortAventura, beaches, water parks, Tarragona and Cambrils

Is Salou Good for Families?

Yes, Salou is a great choice for families — particularly if you want sandy beaches, family-friendly hotels and theme parks while still having a proper Mediterranean holiday.

Salou and the Costa Dorada offer something that’s surprisingly difficult to find in Europe: major theme parks, water parks, sandy beaches and interesting day trips all within one relatively compact destination.

For a first visit, we’d choose 7–10 nights, stay in or around Salou and combine PortAventura World with plenty of beach and pool time rather than trying to fill every day.

It won’t replace Orlando for families looking for the ultimate theme-park holiday, but that’s not really the point. Costa Dorada offers a much shorter journey from the UK, Mediterranean sunshine and a completely different style of family holiday.

⭐ Holiday Blueprint Verdict: If your family likes the sound of roller coasters in the morning and the beach in the afternoon, Salou deserves a place on your shortlist.
